chapter 5

1. Define an effective diagnostic model at the organization level. Discuss its major

inputs, outputs and strategic orientation.

At organization level , the effective diagnosis is done in three phases which are input,

design components and ouput.Input includes general environment and industry

environment.Design components includes all different parts of the organization that are

important for acheiving goals. The are technology, strategy, human resources systems,

measurement systems and sructure. All this together contributes to a culture that the

organization follows.Outputs includes the organization effectiveness means how well the

organization performing. For eg - performance productivity, stakeholders satisfcation.

Chapter 6

2. What are the key components of group level diagnosis? Discuss how the absence

of any one of these components can impact outputs.

Group Level Diagnosis focuses on evaluating inputs, transformations (design

components), and outputs that are necessary in achieving team effectiveness related to

performance and quality work life. Therefore, the measure focused on assessing the

group level design components of goal clarity, task structure, group composition, team

functioning and group norms to ensure alignment with the organizational structure of the

larger system in which these work groups were embedded. If even one of the

compononent is missing the work cannot be completed successfully.

3. Under what conditions are quantitative tools useful in analyzing data? Qualitative

tools?

One of the most economical and straightforward ways to summarize quantitative data is
to compute a mean and standard deviation for each item or variable measured. These
represent the respondents’ average score and the spread or variability of the responses,
respectively. These two numbers easily can be compared across different measures or
subgroups. They are helpful in understanding the data collected and plays a very
important role in the reserach phase when data needs to be compared to get some
meaningful information.

Qualitative Tools -There are two most common tools used to create meaningful

information for any project in an organization

Content Analysis
When data is collected for example interview data, the content analysis helps in

converting the data into some meaningful information. This helps in summarizing big data

into small useful information.

Force-Field Analysis

Force Field Analysis is is useful to develop a list of all forces promoing change and all

those resisting it.

4. What are the major diagnostic activities of the OD practitioner?

It is very important for the OD practitioner to understand the need of of relationship to

collect data and informations. In diagnostic process the OD practitioner analyzes findings

in terms of links among systems features. They focus on the problems in the organization

and what is causing them, and find possible solutions for them. Then they take actions on

problems and then practitioners give decision makers feedback. This is meant to help the

client toward any decisions that might be beneficial for the organization.

Before collecting diagnostic information, practitioners need to establish a relationship

with those who will provide and subsequently use it. Because the nature of that

relationship affects the quality and usefulness of the data collected, it is vital that OD

practitioners clarify for organization members who they are, why the data are being

collected, what the data gathering will involve, and how the data will be used..

Establishing the diagnostic relationship between the consultant and relevant organization

members is similar to forming a contract. It is meant to clarity expectations and to specify

the conditions of the relationship. In those cases where members have been directly

involved in the entering and contracting process, the diagnostic contract will typically be

part of the initial contracting step. In situations where data will be collected from

members who have not been directly involved in entering and contracting, however, OD

practitioners will need to establish a diagnostic contract as a prelude to diagnosis
