In the times of Jahiliyyah, slavery was a common practise. Many slaves were treated badly.
With the advent of Islam, many slaves became Muslim and were subsequently tortured for

Surah Masad is Revealed

Abu Lahab was the uncle of the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬who mocked him, abused him
and rejected his da‟wah. The wife of Abu Lahab (Umm Jameel) used to
throw thorns and prickly wood into the path of the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬and his
companions, radhi‟Allahu anhum, So, Allah revealed Surah Masad.

‫َيَتَّب ْت ا َي َي اَييِب ا َيَي ٍب ا َي َي َّبا‬


“watabba” “lahabin” “abi” “yada” “tabbat”
and perish he Lahab (of) Abu (the) Perish
hands
