CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the methodology of research study particularly the research

methods and techniques to be used, selecting the population or subjects and determining

the appropriate size of the sample, the instrument and the data gathering procedure to be

used and their validation and the data analysis scheme which includes the application of

statistical tools for treatment of data yielded by the study.

Methods and Techniques of the Study

Discuss the research approach, design, methods and techniques that you will use/or

used in your study. (DESCRIBE IN YOUR WORDS THE “DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH

METHOD” and “QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH METHOD” AND HOW DOES IT

WILL APPLY IN YOUR STUDY. Show how the method you have chosen helped

accomplish the goals of the study. Avoid a textbook description of your research

method but rather focus only on what you employed and implemented in your study.)

Population and Sample of the Study

You can present a table . . .. (DESCRIBE YOUR PARTICIPANTS IN

EVALUATING YOUR STUDY. THEY MUST BE FROM YOUR CHOSEN

BENEFICIARIES IN CHAPTER 1. Unless the population is extremely small,

a sample usually will be drawn from the population. For example, the target population

was supervisors in food manufacturing factories and the sample selected was 10

supervisors. If you intend to make inferences based on the results you obtain from the
sample of 10 supervisors to the population, explain how accurately the sample represents

the population. Explain how this sample of 10 supervisors is adequate

enough to provide a manageable volume of data that is able to answer the research

questions. Outline the procedures you adopted for selecting the sample of 10 supervisors

including justification for the sampling method or sampling procedure; i.e. why did you

choose the particular sampling method. How did you determine the size of the sample?

i.e. why 10 and not 15?)

Data Gathering Procedure

Classify the data that you will going to obtain (e.g. Primary or secondary

depending on the source of information) and discuss how you will obtain such data. Also,

describe your tools in collecting data (e.g. through observation or inquiry

forms/questionnaire). If you used the DESCRIPTIVE design and administered a

Questionnaire and conducted an Interview, then you must explain it here. Did you

administer the Questionnaire to the sample by assembling them in one location [such as a

classroom, auditorium and so forth]? Did you send the Questionnaire by mail or as an

attachment by email? Did you make available the Questionnaire online [such as through

Survey Monkey]? How was the Interview conducted? Did you conduct the interview and

where was it conducted?

Research Instrument

The INSTRUMENTATION is the process of developing the Instrument for collecting

the relevant data to answer the research questions (EVALUATING THE LAST

SPECIFIC QUESTION IN YOUR CHAPTER 1; you may use as your guide the
“acceptability test form”, please refer to the previous bounded theses). Generally, you

have 3 options:

1. Use an existing instrument which is available commercially - example is the well-

known Eysenck Personality Test

2. Adapt an existing instrument to meet your needs - describe in detail how you

adapted the instrument.

3. Build an instrument from scratch - describe in detail how went about developing

the instrument (IT IS BETTER TO APPLY THIS ONE FOR YOUR

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT)

Then tell the reader about the feature of the Instrument/s used in your study such as:

 How many instruments were used?

 How many items / questions for each instrument?

 Are the items divided into sections?

 What are the sections?

 What does each section measure? - e.g. Items 7 to 13 is regarding 'facility

maintenance'.

Finally, tell the reader, the steps taken to ensure that the instrument/s are reliable and valid.

Data Processing and Statistical Treatment

Desribe how will you treat the results of your research instrument by using an

appropriate statistical treatment (e.g. Mean, Standard deviation, regression). Briefly

discuss how such treatment will affect the data that will be gathered in your study.
