Program time: 3:30 pm-4:30 pm Program location: Brooklyn Branch of

for 4 weeks. Public Library
Program description: What are the different activities?
What will the kids be doing?
What is your role?
Are they solo or group activities?

At 3:30 pm, the teen volunteers will be paired with a child by the
librarian running the program. They will both receive a copy of the
book being read that day and they will read together for at least fifteen
minutes. Once they are done reading, the pairs can do crossword
puzzles, play word games, or do an art activity. While the teens and
children are participating in the program, a librarian will be in the
room to monitor behavior and be available for questions.

Community What need/interest does this program meet and how?

need/interests:
When doing my community analysis of Brooklyn, OH, I identified
that there are a lot of children living in the community who speak
English as a second language. Currently, the programs offered at the
Brooklyn Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library System does
not contain a program that focuses on the needs of this specific group
of children. ESL Reading Buddies seeks to pair children who speak
English as a second language with a teen volunteer from the local high
school. The teens will listen to the children read a short and simple
book in English and assist them with pronunciation etc. (when
needed). This will, hopefully, improve the child’s English vocabulary
and reading comprehension skills.

children’s collection. During the program there will also be a small
display of titles that the children can check out and take home. Flyers
advertising the library’s future childrens programs will also be
available.
Learning Outcomes: 1. Improve the literacy skills of children who speak English as a
second language.
2. Build children’s confidence with reading English.

Assessment Plan: 1. Walking around the program and listening to the children read.
If the children sound like they are able to fluidly read the
vocabulary of a story it will show that they are improving their
reading skills. Also, by asking them a question, I will be able
to determine if they are comprehending the story plot.
2. Distributing a small survey to the children and their parents at
the end of the program. Questions for children will include
things about whether they enjoyed the program, whether they
think their reading skills improved, and
suggestions/comments. The parent’s survey will ask if they
have noticed an improvement in their child’s vocabulary and
reading comprehension skills. Also, there will be a place for
questions, comments, and suggestions.
