Classroom management Plan

Classroom Management Plan

Classroom management is key in any educational setting. I believe setting the tone for a

positive learning environment with engaging activities, lessons, and positive behavioral support

will increase the chances of students’ needs being met. Having an environment that enables all

students to learn is my goal for having good classroom management.

Classroom Arrangement

In my classroom I have five rows of four desks and my desk is in the front left of the

classroom. Unfortunately, I took over my class at the quarter and I am with my students in the

computer lab. This does not allow me to effectively design and arrange my classroom the way I

would really like to, due to a lot of traffic from other classes. If I could, I would put a large

number of posters on the wall that would engage my students to think. There would also be

posters on the wall that would outline the upcoming quarter and year ahead.

My desk is in the front of the room. While I am having class, I rarely sit at my desk. I like

to wander around my classroom while I am teaching. The desk serves its purpose for taking

attendance, grading papers, and other administrative purposes.

I also have a big rectangular table at the front of my classroom where there will be handouts and

other materials that pertain to the lesson or unit.

My goal is to develop an environment that is conducive to instruction and group work.

Since I teach Special Education 7th grade ELA, I have to differentiate a lot. This forces me to do

a lot of group work. Luckily, I have Mindplay, which is a computer-based phonics program that
my students are required to do 20 to 30 minutes a day. This allows me to break my class up into

two, sometimes three groups depending on academic skill level.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

Entering the classroom

Enter class quietly, get necessary materials, and sit in your seat promptly.

Beginning your class period

Get out your bell ringer activity and complete it. There is a bin at the front of the

classroom to keep your bell ringer in, or you can keep it with you, but you need to be responsible

enough to be at class on time to get it before class begins. IF YOU GET INTO CLASS AND

HAVE NOT HAD TIME TO GET YOUR BELL RINGER BEFORE THE BELL RINGS, SIT

IN YOUR SEAT AND IT WILL BE PASSED OUT TO YOU.

Tardies

If you come to class late, without a pass, you will be marked tardy. Consistent tardies will

result in agenda passes being taken away and detention.

Pencil sharpening

You may sharpen your pencil before class but remember you must be in your seat when

class begins. Part of coming to class prepared means having your pencil sharpened and all the

necessary materials ready to go. If your pencil breaks, do not stand up in the middle of

instruction or directions and disrupt class. During these times, you need to raise your hand and

ask permission to sharpen your pencil.

Cell phones

Only to be used for academic purposes with permission from the instructor. Ask before

you use, or it will be sent up to the office regardless of your excuse/reason. If this occurs, your

parent will have to come and retrieve the phone from the office for you.

Restroom/drink breaks/ finish early

You have time during passing to use the restroom and get a drink. You may use the

restroom and get a drink during INDEPENDENT work and only if it is an emergency and you

have an agenda pass for the current week.

Food and drink can only be used if they do not disturb class in any way.

If you finish an assignment early, check over your work to make sure it is correct first. If

you have done this, raise your hand for help. Do not disrupt others if you finish early.

Throwing away trash

If there is something that you need to throw away, it needs to be done at a time when

getting up presents minimal distraction. Do not stand up in the middle of instruction or directions

and disrupt the class. During these times and during group work, you need to raise your hand and

ask permission to throw away items. You should only need to do this once during a class period,

if at all, so make sure you collect all of your trash before getting up. NO THROWING

ANYTHING IN THE ROOM!

Returning from an absence

It is your responsibility to get any work you missed when absent. You will first need to

check the bell ringer board to complete your bell ringer, then speak with the teacher to see if

there are any questions on missed assignments.

Turning in late or absent work

Do not throw it on the teacher’s desk; directly hand the assignment to the teacher.

Dismissal from class

I dismiss you from class, not the clock. You must be in your seat, with your desks aligned

and your floor area cleaned to ensure that the next class has a productive working environment.

RULES

Listen and follow directions

Raise your hand before speaking and leaving your seat.

Keep your hands and feet to yourself.

Respect your classmates and your teacher

CONSEQUENCES

1. Verbal warning

2. Time out. Student will step out of class to cool off and take a breather.

3. Phone call or email to parent or guardian.

CONCLUSION

Classroom management is crucial to the success of students. Making sure that rules and

procedures are simple, stated clearly, and reinforced daily will minimize disruption and

confusion. Having an environment like this will promote students to follow rules, make better

decisions, and to promote self-regulation. Consistency is also very important. My kiddos know

that every day begins with a bell ringer activity, then instruction, and then Mindplay. Then

knowing this before they get to class helps minimize any distractions or confusion, because they

typically know what they will be doing in class.
