Developing Instructional Media

Date: November 30, 2019

Introduction

The Glow Instructors set out to design an interactive lesson for primary school

students with the aim of enhancing learning while making the topic fun and relatable. The

lesson entitled The Parts of a Plant was designed to target students aged 7-11 or in Grades 3-

5.

Evaluators Overview

The project was designed knowing there was a need to test the reliability of the

program in order to meet the needs of the students. The team selected two members from

other groups to fulfill the role of evaluators of the project. Both persons were knowledgeable

in the field of Instructional Design and reported their findings based on their interaction with

our website. The two evaluators chosen for this project were Mr. Michael Reneau and Mrs.

Kanika Cooper-Carrington.

Mr. Michael Reneau highlighted in his feedback that the project was properly put

together and captured the audience that was targeted. On the other hand, Mr. Reneau made

some key observations which needed to be remedied. Mrs. Cooper-Carrington gave the

project a passing grade but also noted some elements which could enhance the overall

project. Further evaluation can be seen in the table located in the Appendix.

Summary of Report Findings

Evaluator #1 pointed out issues pertaining to the originality and ingenuity of the program.

Given more time and tools, a more elaborate and inventive program could have been

developed. He also highlighted a very important point of beta testing on various web

browsers to ensure compatibility before launching. Had this comprehensive testing been

carried out, this discrepancy would have been discovered and remedied. This program was

2
intended for use by young children and the suggestion for a brighter color scheme will be

taken into account in Glow Instructor’s next kid-friendly interactive project. Evaluator #2

also mentioned the need for the screen presentation to be enhanced and made more attractive

for children and called for the use of authentic video content as opposed to already existing

resources. Glow Instructors have also made note of the necessity to state the production of

original content where applicable so as to remove any ambiguity from the minds of users as

to whether the content is original in nature or externally sourced. The feedback has been duly

received and appreciated and we look forward to revising, developing and launching more

high calibre multimedia projects in the future.

Things that are fine

The evaluators pointed out some key areas of the project that were well done and met the

requirements of the evaluation criteria;

● The storyboard was in sequence and was easy to follow.

● Content is organized, all the content is relevant and flows in a chronological order.

● All media were properly identified on the storyboard and the application.

● It was evident that there was a vast knowledge of the information shared, and was

properly put in order for the presentation.

● Was written properly and delivery was on point.

● Appropriate media was used.

● Video, images and other media selected were appropriately used and displayed.

3
Things that need revising

The evaluators reports were taken into consideration and feedback on areas that needed to be

reviewed were welcomed and appreciated in order for Glow Instructors to make

improvements.

● The application and storyboard can be seen as originally created by the group,

measuring it to what is out there, the idea isn’t completely original, but it's proven to

be effective.

● It was unclear as to whether the song at the beginning was an original or it was taken

from the internet. More originality is needed where applicable, for example videos,

songs and audios application.

● The program worked on all Personal Computers, but there was an issue working with

Internet Explorer on some laptops. Perhaps testing of the platform can also be done on

all web browsers.

● Some media were properly identified on the storyboard and the

● Graphics chosen was appreciated and matched the topic selected. Perhaps a level of

consistency in the images, either the use of real-life images or only cartoon type

images remain consistent. In addition graphic in the beginning is a bit pixelated.

● Screen is properly put together. Perhaps for the target audience more colors would be

needed.

● Screen design was okay, it should be enhanced based on the target audience.

Remedying the Problem

Based on the above identified deficiencies, prescribed revisions were proposed to address

these issues.

4
Originality - With reference to boosting the originality of the project, this aspect can be

enhanced by creating our own video instead of referencing YouTube content. For the next

version of our project, we intend to substitute YouTube videos with real-life video content

such as footage of actual plants and interviews with gardeners. It must be noted however, that

the introduction song, narrator (flower image) and navigational tools and buttons were all

originally created by Glow Instructors. Mention will be made of these original creations in

our revised version.

Copyright and documentation - Most sources are properly cited according to APA style;

The images used were graphics from web pages that granted us the right to use their sources

and other media for future reference.

Format and Platform Transferability - Consideration will be given to testing of the

program on various web browsers and not only on various devices. A beta testing of the

project on a plurality of web browsers will be carried out to ensure that the final product is

compatible with and runs efficiently on all Internet browsers. One note though, Internet

Explorer has compatibility problems due to its outdated updates by Microsoft. So the

recommended web browser is 2019 versions of Google Chrome, Firefox or Opera Browser.

Graphic design - The use of cartoon elements were consistent throughout the project both in

imagery and video content. The narrator (Floretta) was created in Photoshop and underwent

rigorous resolution quality controls to ensure the best product possible. The amount of

graphics used was appropriate and relevant to the subject area.

Screen Design - Revisions would be made to enhance the color scheme of the project, for

example, brighter shades of green to emphasize background leaves and a brighter background

color throughout. It is understood that young learners are attracted to vibrant colors and

imagery which fosters a higher level of engagement with interactive programs such as this.
