0 INTRODUCTION

On 27th of October 2019 (Sunday), our group that consisted of Sharifah Hafizah Izzati Binti Syed
Hamzah (group leader), Odilia Maikal, Juanry Lamsan, Kennedy Eusebius and Ra Atra Anak Raban went
to Palm Beach Resort and Peace Park at Pantai Damai to conduct our interview with the tourists with
the theme, “Tourists in Labuan”. We choose the weekend because we have no class on that day and
since that is the only the free time that we had. First, we went to Palm Beach Resort to find the tourists
for our interview session. There was so many tourists at the resort and quite difficult to get the tourist
for the interview because some of them did not want to cooperate with us for the interview session.
After that, we went to Mayang Sari Sunset at Batu Manikar to ask some of the local people where to
find the tourists, besides Palm Beach Resort and the local people said that we can find the tourists at
the Peace Park Pantai Damai. We went to Peace Park, Pantai Damai and thankful that we found the
tourists that wanted to be interviewed. First interviewee was from Kuala Lumpur named Alice and
Adam from United Kingdom. Second interviewee was Mr. Rahman from Batu Pahat, Johor. We glad
that they were kindly wanted to respond our question for the interview session.

We also discover our potential for our strengths and weaknesses in doing things we do not do,
to communicate and interact with strangers. For example, how can we ask or talk together in a formal
or informal setting. In addition, we can look at the perspectives of various students and are impressed
with the 'interview' perspective as we have never thought of Labuan in different perspectives. We also
realized that we only knew Labuan on the surface, but now we can learn more about Labuan.
Therefore, we are grateful that this opportunity allowed us to see the other side of Labuan.

We interviewed a few of tourists in Pulau Labuan. During the interviewing process, we decided
to go Pantai Damai as our place for doing research. To legitimize my content by attracting the
interview, we try to pick a couple from London, United Kingdom and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and also
a guy from Batu Pahat, Johor as our interviewers for our Business Communication Project. It is not easy
to find tourists as our interviewers. The reason we pick them as our interviewers because most of the
people are local people from Labuan. Before we start asking the question, we started by asking them
the permission to make the interviews. We planned to explain our main questions with, “What is the
purpose you come Labuan?”, “What is your favourite place in Labuan?”, “What is your expectation
about Labuan?” and “Would you like to visit Labuan again?”. That are some questions, we asked them.
They give us a good cooperation during the interviews. Besides that we are also taking some pictures
as our evidence of our projects. With a good cooperation between them and us, we complete our
group projects smoothly. That's the reason why we pick them as our interviewers.

 Before we had an interview with tourists on October 27th, our group decided to visit Palm
Beach Resort. When we arrived at the destination, we found a lot of tourists and without wasting time
we started our friendly interview there. However, it is not easy to do interviews with them because
most of them do not want to be interrupted. Then we continue our journey to our next destination,
Mayang Sari Sunset at Batu Manikar. When we were there, we started looking for tourists again, but
what we could see was that most of the people there were locals and we didn't even find a single
tourist. We accidentally met a local man and we asked him where we could find a tourist in Labuan
besides Palm Beach Resort. That man told us we could find tourists in the Peace Park Beach (Pantai
Taman Damai). With that information, we rushed to the Peace Park Beach. When we arrived at the
Peace Park Beach, what we saw was that most tourists were locals and very few tourists from another
country. That man told us we could find tourists in the Peace Park Beach (Pantai Taman Damai). With
that information, we rushed to the Peace Park Beach. When we arrived at the Peace Park Beach, what
we saw was that most tourists were locals and very few tourists from another country. Once again we
started our search, we entered the Peace Park, which is a historical site of the old war relics and walks
along the beautiful peaceful coast. We finally found a tourist for an interview. The first tour was Alice
from Kuala Lumpur and her couple’s Adam from the United Kingdom. Second was Mr. Rahman from
Batu Pahat, Johor. All of them were very kind to answer a few questions from us. After the end of our
interview, we were able to take a picture with them.

For this interview we select Palm Beach, Palm Beach Resort, Peace Park, and Ferry Station as
our place to conduct this interview. It is because this place is a famous places that contain so many
tourists also this place like Palm Beach, Palm Beach Resort, and Peace Park is a famous tourist places
in Labuan. Another reason why we conduct this interview at places like the beach is because Labuan
is a place that famous with Beaches and Labuan have so many beautiful Beach but we select Palm
Beach. It is because that places nearby with Palm Beach Resort so we can get more tourist there that
other beaches.

In order to accomplish our assignment, we decided to make a jump start on 27 October which is on
Sunday at 11:00 a.m. We rent a car in order to make us easier to make from one place to another. At
around 11:30 a.m. we arrived at Palm Beach Resort, we decided to make a progress by finding a tourist
to interview at the seaside or Palm Beach which is nearby the resort. Even there is a lot of tourists, we
find it is quite difficult to get a tourist to interview since it is a weekend and most people do not want
to be disturbed while they spending time with their family. After about 10 minutes finding a tourist,
we manage to find a tourist to interview. We start by asking several common questions such as where
he/she come from, with whom he/she travelling with, what he/she thinks about Labuan and so on.

 After that, we proceed to ask the core question to the tourist in order to complete the
interview. We ask about the purpose of he/she is visiting Labuan, why he/she choose to visit Labuan
and so on. After finishing asking questions and gathering information, we noticed that the interview
took around 15 minutes. At around 12:00 p.m. we accomplish with one interview so we proceed to
find next tourist to interview. We went back to the resort and start to find another tourist to interview
at the lobby of the resort. The lobby seems to be quite less crowded than the seaside area, so spend
another 10 minutes to find another tourist. Fortunately we manage to find another tourist and spend
around 15 minutes to gather information about him for the assignment by asking questions. At around
12:45p.m, after we finish gathering information for two tourists at Palm Beach Resort, we decided to
move to another place which is called Peace Park. It took around 20 minutes drive until we arrived to
the destination. We arrived at around 1:10 p.m. and we start to look around at the place in order to
locate the tourist spot such as food stall and the monument in the park so that it's easy for us to find
tourist.

After finishing finding a tourist spot, we started to find a tourist to be interviewed. We spend
about 20 minutes to find a tourist, it take a little bit longer that before because the Peace Park area is
quite bigger than the Palm Beach area and the tourist is quite scatter around making us to take more
times. After finding a tourist we spend around 15 minutes to gather information the tourist. At around
2:00p.m., after we finish gathering information, we decided to move to another place which is Labuan’s
Ferry Station. After 25 minutes drive, we arrived at the Ferry Station and we start to find tourist to get
information. It took us less than 10 minutes to find a tourist to interview, it is quite easy to find it
because there are a lot of tourists at the Ferry Station. We finished the interview around 15 minutes.
After getting total 4 tourists to the interview we noticed that most all the interviews took around 15
minutes to complete. At around 3:10p.m we finish our information gathering activities.

2.0 REPORT OF INTERVIEW

2.1 INTERVIEW WITH ALICE AND ADAM

2.2.1 INTRODUCTION

The interview was being conducted by Odilia Maikal with Mrs. Alice on 27th October 2019
(Sunday) at Pantai Layang-Layangan around 4pm. The interviews were being done for 10minutes to 15
minutes. The reason we do the interview is to investigate the purpose she come to Labuan. Other than
that, we want to discover what is interesting in Labuan.

Our group walked together to find the interviewers for our group project. When we search for
the interviews, Sharifah found a couple seats at one stall eating together. We ask them a permission
to do an interview and we explain our purpose why we need to interview them. According to Mrs.
Alice, the reason she came to Labuan is to have a peace calm holiday here.

2.2.2 BODY OF INTERVIEW

Odilia: Hi! Can we interview both of you?

Alice: Hi! May I know what is about?

Odilia: Actually we doing our group project “Business Communication”. We have to interview tourists
to talk about Labuan.

Odilia: Can we start our interview?

Alice: Yes, sure.

Odilia: Can I know your name?

Alice: Hi! My name is Alice and I’m from Kuala Lumpur.

Adam: Hi! My name is Adam and I’m from the UK.

Odilia: Can we know what is your purpose visit Labuan?

Alice: Actually, it’s about family holiday because it’s public holidays and also because of family business
here.

Odilia: Can I know your 1st place and where did you go when u reach here?

Alice: The first place we go is having a dinner. We ate seafood at Tanjung Aru last night and the taste
is so delicious at here. We also go to Kampung Patau-Patau called Water Village at Jalan Merdeka,
Labuan

Odilia: Can you share the view at Water Village?

Alice: Sure. Actually, there is a long wooden walkway that is used to connect each and every house in
the village. Most of the houses have their own boat as transport. Their houses are quite spacious. We
are staying there for our holiday trip.

Odilia: What do you think about Labuan?

Alice: Here is so calm and nice. We enjoy our trip here also.

Odilia: Can we know the different between Semenanjung and Labuan?

Alice: Here is calmer rather than KL which is so busy and have lots of work there. I recommend others
tourists visit here.

Odilia: Are you willing to come here again?

Alice: Yeah. Sure because here have a lot of beautiful island. Actually we going to Rusukan Island
tomorrow to enjoy our next trip.

Odilia: Thank you because willing to lend us your time for our group project.

2.2.3 CONCLUSION

In the conclusion we can see, most of the tourists came to Labuan for a trip on holiday. As you can see
Mrs. Alice and Mr Adam, the tourist came from Kuala Lumpur and London, they really enjoy the
vacation they make in Labuan. They have been visited a lot of famous places in Labuan just in 3 days.
It is a special place because it’s out of the busy traffic jam, busy from rushing going work and many
more.

2.3 INTERVIEW BETWEEN JUAN AND MR. RAHMAN

2.3.1 INTRODUCTION

The interview was being conducted by Juan with Mr. Rahman on 27th October 2019 (Sunday)
at Pantai Batu Manikar around 1.30pm. The interviews were being done for 10minutes to 15 minutes.
The reason we do the interview is to investigate the purpose he came to Labuan. Other than that, we
want to discover what is interesting in Labuan.

2.3.2 BODY OF INTERVIEW

Juan: Hi! We are from UMS Labuan. We would like to do an interview for our group project about Why
tourist come to Labuan? It is under “Business Communication” course.

Mr. Rahman: Hi! May I know what question would u like to ask for?

Juan: May I know your name first and where are you from?

Mr. Rahman: My name is Muhammad Rahman and I’m from Batu Pahat, Johor.

Juan: Can I know what is your purpose come to Labuan?

Mr. Rahman: The reason I came here because I have work trip here for 1 week.

Juan: May I know where do you stay in Labuan?

Mr. Rahman: I stay at Palm Beach Resort.

Juan: Mr. Rahman, What do you think about Labuan?

Mr. Rahman: What I think about Labuan is a bit slow development. It is because I have come here
many time doing my work here and there is no any new environment here. There is no shopping
complex like in Semananjung or Sabah Sarawak. There’s only have Ujana Kewangan Complex here at
their big shopping mall.

Juan: Actually, we agree with that because I could compare the environment between Semenanjung
and here, Labuan. There no entertainment here.

Juan: Mr. Rahman, can I know any interesting place in Labuan?

Mr. Rahman: In Labuan they have a lot of historical places such as War Memorial Park, Museum
Chimney and many more. You could discover more if you guys have time to discover it.

Juan: Yes, sure, we just have a trip in Labuan. Thank you for your opinion Mr. Rahman. Mr. Rahman,
would like to a recommended outsider from Semenanjung, Sabah and Sarawak to visit Labuan.

Mr. Rahman: I could say yes because they could help government to improve Labuan environment
here if there is a lot of tourist in Labuan.

Juan: Thank you Mr. Rahman for spending your time for our group project. We hope you get a safe
flight return back to Johor.

Mr. Rahman: Most welcome. Goodluck in your assignment.

2.3.3 CONCLUSION

We could conclude that, there is still have tourist places for them to visit, but for Mr Rahman, Labuan
need to upgrade their tourist place to have more visitors from outside. Futhermore, the visitors also
could have a calm and chill environment because there is no busy car sound or traffic jam. Labuan is
free from the traffic jam. The most interesting is in Labuan there are free duty for them to buy
chocolate, alcohol or cars.

3.0 REFLECTION

Our group consist of six group members in total. We had discussed and agreed to divide our
works equally according to our personal ability before we wanted to make the interview session. For
an example, two persons will be in charge as the interviewers, then the other three will be in charge
as a cameraman and one person will be responsible for recording the conversation between
interviewer and the tourists. We found that the main purpose of the interview session, making us as
students got a good experience and challenging because there were too many different attitude and
personality of the tourists that we wanted to make the interview. We make a good teamwork before
the interview started until the end of the session either we had the difficulty when we make the
interview session and decide where that we can find the tourists for interview them.

Reflection session was carried out after conduction of interviews among our group in order to
discover our strengths and weaknesses. We would like to thank to the lecturer because guild we do
this assignment and let us do this assignment outside the university. For this assignment, we manage
to have a break, time to do this assignment during completing our assignment have a chance went all
around famous places in Labuan, like Peace Park, Palm Beach, Palm Beach Resort, and International
Labuan Ferry Terminal. For this assignment we have spoken with other tourist from other countries
and it has given us an opportunity to gather strength to build a confident talking to the tourist..

During all the time we do the assignment, we have been through a lot of different situations
such as embarrassing situation. For example, when we try to ask people to help us with our
assignment, but instead we get a rejection toward people and refuse to cooperate with our
assignment. Even though we get a lot of rejection from people, we as a team did not give up on that
day as we aim to finish the assignment on that day so that it will become easier and give us a lot of
spare time for us to do the report. Despite been through to an embarrassing situation, we also get a
chance to experience an relieve situation. From all the interview we have done, we meet several
tourists that a really friendly to us and give a great cooperation. The tourist gives an exact answer we
need and all the criteria we want. Some of the tourists also help us by giving us tips on where to find a
spot that have a lot of tourists such as at the Labuan Ferry Terminal. This kind of tourist really raises
our spirits to do the assignment because we can feel the ongoing progress in our assignment. Even
though we have been through different kind of situation, but we realize that not all people are the
same and it is our duty to keep respect people choice because we do not want anything to happen
that will make our University reputation become worse or people look it in the bad way.

In order to complete this assignment we have been through a lot of of the problem, but we
still manage to complete this assignment. One of our strengthen in our group is we keep every problem

we had to be discussed together as a team, we listen each problem a manage to argue with that. Other
than that, we are also keeping supporting our team to keep calm to go through any problem and did
not take it alone and deal with that alone. So, we help each other and hear their idea and discuss about
that. We also have a problem to deal with the tourist because some tourist a not familiar with local
people, but we still manage to deal with that because we keep challenging our group to just do it and
argue with the tourist. It is our strength to keep the tourist did not feel uncomfortable with us.

Despite having a great strength in our team, the weakness also exists in our group in different
type of shape. For the first weakness that we realize exist in our group is that we do not have the ability
to make a quick decision making. During meeting for strategy planning in, we as a group find it difficult
to make a decision about where we are going to do the assignment, what type of questions we going
to ask to the tourist, how to gather the information on the tourist we going to interview and so on.
Even though this type of weakness could make the progress of our assignment become a little bit slow
but at the end of it, we still manage overcome our weakness and find a way to make the progress of
our assignment become smoother. From how we do it is simply improve the communication between
each other of the group member so that we can easily can find a way to overcome our problem. By
improving our communication skill in our group, it allows all of the group members to have a chance
to express their own ideas or opinion which they think can help with the progression of the assignment.

Another weakness that we have been through is that we realize that to do this assignment, we
need to go to need several budgets to use in order to make the progression of our assignment going
smoothly. For example, we need to pay the car that allows us to move to one place to another easily,
we need to pay the fees the entrances of any premises that we are going to enter if there is a fee, we
need to pay for the car’s fuel, we need to pay for our food and so on. As a student, it is hard for us to
spend a huge amount of money in just a day because since we are a student, we want to minimize our
daily spending of money as we do not have any side income other than from the PTPTN and for our
family. Despite having money problems in our group, we determine our self that the money we spend
on that day is the one that going to make a progress to our assignment and we came to a solution by
splitting the cost into six parts as we have six members in our group.

4.0 CONCLUSION

As for the conclusion, The Labuan Federal Territory is a popular tourist destination in Malaysia,
but given the lack of tourist attraction, our group's work has become increasingly difficult. Although in
Labuan there are interesting places, but there is not much to see. However, our group will still be
interviewing even if we have to go somewhere far away.

We were very fortunate to meet local people while our group was looking for tourists at
Mayang Sari Sunset at Batu Manikar. We were lucky to find tourists at Pantai Layang-layangan and
Batu Manikar. Among the tourist's answers was that when they were in Kuala Lumpur, the atmosphere
there was quite busy and it was always raining, but when they were in Labuan, the atmosphere in
Labuan was very pleasant and very comfortable. This shows that they are traveling not only for the
sake of fun, but also for the relaxing and to enjoy the beauty of nature.

Everything went smoothly as our team made preparations before making a decision. Creating
a plan is so important that we don't make any mistakes. With this new experience, we learned that
confidence is very important because without confidence, we are not able to communicate with
tourists, especially when communicating in a language that we do not speak well. In addition, we also
learned that when doing an interview, only one person is interviewing to make the tourist feel
comfortable. Lastly, the interview was fun and exciting because it was so different from the other
assignment we had.
