III. Introduction

Background of the study

Nowadays, people use a lot of plastic bags in their everyday life. Most of the things around us

are made of plastics. They use it in carrying things like foods and stuffs. The durability and the light

weight of it can make into another useful products. However, plastic is dangerous because of the
chemicals it contains and it may affect the environment. However, many countries have been

banning the use of plastic bags because it can cause harm and pollution to the environment.

According to Philippines Plastic Pollution, Philippines consume 2.7 million of plastics every year

and it takes 1000 years to destroy completely. In other words, you are already gone but the plastic

bags you used still exist.

Banana Peduncle is mainly composed of fiber and juice. They are capable of making a value

added products. Peduncle juice can be added to ready-to-drink Calamansi juice with potassium and

sodium. These can be found in a sport drink to prevent dehydration. The potassium in peduncle juice

can also be used in making a fertilizer for Pechay, Kale, Parsley, Carrots, Okra, Eggplant and

Tomato. The fiber of peduncles can make paper and bonded peduncle boards. Paper bags became

popular choice for shopping and food items due to the durability and it is eco friendly. Paper bags

also offer many eco-friendly benefits to those who use them. They can be recycled the turned into a

new paper or it can be reused repeatedly. In fact, it requires less energy for paper bags to be recycled

than it does for plastic. Paper bags have a less of a threat to the environment and wildlife.

The researchers decided to reduce the use of plastic bag by using banana peduncles as a

packaging paper. Banana peduncles can be seen in the rice field nothing so, the researchers turned

this into a useful thing than being left to waste. Getting the rotten banana peduncles, unlike plastic

bags, packaging paper is more eco-friendly and can maintain the freshness of the food because it is

organic and does not contain chemicals. Therefore, using packaging paper is more convenient to use

than plastic bags.

Significance of the study:

This study will provide the consumers with some knowledge on protecting our environment,

by using banana peduncles as bags and how to reuse it for the long term use. It will help to decrease

the amount of waste that causes pollution. Everyone can benefit from this study because the fact that

it will save our environment and keep it clean, it is a privilege for the future life that we secure their
future. It will give the consumers the realization that plastics have been the problem of the society

and serves as a guide not to use plastics instead value the use of banana peduncles and our financial

needs will also decrease.

Scope and Delimitation

The main focus of the study is to reduce the use of plastic bags in the community by using

banana peduncles as a packaging paper. It also helps our environment clean. Our homemade banana

peduncle as a packaging paper is made out of banana peels that were left under the sun to make it

dry. It is also one of the raw materials that were used in making this product. The researchers also

studied the possible price range of our product and compared it to an ordinary paper. Basically, the

researchers are trying to find a way to save our Earth in our own ways. The researchers notice that

plastic bags is over used nowadays because wherever you go there is a plastic bag that you can see.

This study is delimited in selected grade 12 Engineering Technology students of Baliuag University.

The researchers will only get their concern to the huge amount of plastic waste and if they are pro or

against to the use of banana peduncles as packaging paper. It will also investigate the probable

effects of using banana peduncles to the environment based on the respondents answers to improve

the research. The researchers proved that the banana peduncles can be an alternative paper

packaging, and it is affordable than the commercial brands. The researchers conduct the study to

make a less expensive paper. Also, banana peduncles are seasonal. It will take 9 to 12 months to be

fully grown and it is in season from March to June only.

Review of Related Literatures

(Saika et al., 1997) Banana (Musa paradisiaca) can be a source of fiber. Indeed, Banana

belongs to the important fruit crops. After the farmers harvested the fruit, the plant will be cut down

and thrown away, therefore it will turn into waste. The banana plant has three parts pseudo stem,

peduncles and leaf. The pseudo stem portion of the plant fiber is suitable for making ropes and twins.
According to (Tavanlar, 2014) many value added products can be made from the banana

peduncles like paper products, dietary fiber and fertilizers. Philippines uses 2.3 million metric tons of

banana peduncle a year and just go to waste. In their report, the use of the fiber can make paper

products and composite fibers including resin-bonded and cement-bonded peduncle board and as the

result, the endurance, elasticity and absorption have a good results.

According to (Babasa, 2019) Banana peduncles is a potential raw material for paper

packaging. It was found out that there’s a significant differences on both packaging papers in terms

of its absorption of water.

(Wobiwo et al., 2017) states that a banana (Musa Paradisiaca) grow everywhere in

Bangladesh in a certain area. A banana tree can produce large quantities of wastes, as of now there

are 3,740,096 tons of dumped waste which came from a banana tree. These dumped wastes from

banana tree can be a new material or product that can help a community to lessen the use of

excessive plastic bags. There are people who already study for the extraction of banana fibers.

Anaerobic digestion of soft tissues

of banana wastes separated fibers.

(Jahan et al., 2007) A high fiber length means paper can resist tearing. Higher fiber length in

extracted banana peduncles can be explained by the separation of all non fibrous cell, a short fiber

were removed in the extraction process. Fiber lengths were comparable to those of jute bast fiber.

(Saikia et al., 1997). Most of the bananas are grow on tropical places. The farmers are also

producers because they produce majority of the crops that supplies home consumption or local

markets (Bergh, Picq, & Vézina, 2013). In addition, Banana is the second most produced fruit after

citrus. Thus, 16% of the world’s total fruit production came from banana. India is considered as the

most or largest producer of banana in the world with the approximated of 27% of banana production.

According to them the banana is multi-purpose just like food, pharmaceutical, packaging, and many

other industrial applications (Debabandya Mohapatra,2010). According to Vigneswara, Pavithra,

Gayathri, and Mythili (2015), it has stated that banana fibers have the most contribution especially in
textile and packaging industry.

(Tavanlar, M.A.T, Ramirez, T.J., Sapin, A.B., 2012) Banana peduncle from Musa

cavendishii was read for its segments and usage into high worth included items. Fiber and juice were

observed to be the primary parts and these were extricated by methods for retting and by mechanical

press, separately. The cell length of peduncle fiber is longer than those from other non-wood

materials and arranges it as a long fiber. The elasticity of the internal fiber (5.18 kg f/gm) is similar to

water lily fiber. Peduncle fiber has high holocellulose content (roughly 75.0%), alpha cellulose

(51.72-58.90%) and hemicelluloses (15.92-16.77%). Peduncle juice was observed to be 80% by new

weight, has high all out Polyphenol content (342.89 smaller scale g GAE/mL) and high substance of

potassium (425.80 mg/100 mL) and sodium (455.20 mg/100 mL). Peduncle juice demonstrated no

unfavorable impacts in intense oral lethality tests in mice. Dried fiber was used for dietary fiber

advancement of meat items, notwithstanding some recognized useful properties, for assembling of

fiber sheets, for mash and paper, for small scale cellulose generation and for manure. The juice was

added to prepared to-drink calamansi for potassium particle and Polyphenol stronghold, utilized as

potassium supplement in hydroponics of different plate of mixed greens, as fluid potassium manure

for banana and other high worth yields. In view of the constrained preparation tests, peduncle juice in

addition to a nitrogen source like urea gives more biomass and higher attractive yield. From every

one of these outcomes, banana peduncle ought not be left to squander. The different items

demonstrated to be gotten from this material can enhance salary of ranchers and make new ventures

utilizing straightforward advances.
