Philosophy of Education

John Dewey once said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself” (Heick,

2017). This is closely related to my philosophy on learning. The center of my creative

representation, which depicts my philosophy, is the phrase “Education helps you blossom”. This

phrase is important because as Dewey states, education is life itself. We need education to

survive. From birth to death, we are constantly learning. We learn to breath, walk, talk etc. The

system of education helps individuals as they progress throughout life, by guiding them and

ensuring they are equipped with the tools necessary to reach their life’s goals.

Learning occurs from the moment we take our first breath and will continue until our final

one. Keeping this in mind, it is important to note that learning almost always requires the

assistance of another individual. While some learning can be accomplished alone, most learning

occurs with the aide of a teacher. This teacher can be a parent, a loved one, or even life itself.

Parrish (2018), discusses how students can even teach each other and created a system that

allowed students to make changes in their own behavior.

I constantly remind my students that my purpose is to help them achieve their varying goals. I

try to first form positive relationships and build trust so that my students understand that I want

to see them all blossom. I like to think of myself as a watering can and my students as blooming

flowers. I provide them with information, support, and tools necessary to succeed in the course. I

may see the growth daily after every class meeting however, if I don’t believe they’re growing at

the necessary pace, I check in and provide additional support. The first day of class my students

are caterpillars and by the last day of class I except them to transform into butterflies. In my

opinion, this is displayed when they leave the course with more knowledge than they began with.

The basis of my philosophy is the idea that for growth to happen, learning must take place!
