1. Can you give examples of how nurses might use the computers in patient care.
- Nurses can use computers for checking medical and patient data, inventory, schedule
of staffs, for timekeeping, ordering medications and supplies, medical imaging and
equipment that perform CT scans, ultrasounds, MRIs or blood test, research,
communication and telemedicine. Moreover, computers that has electronic health
records (EHRs) or electronic medical records (EMRs) can add efficiency and lessen the
mistakes occurred in the area since it can able to document medication being given with
dosage, dressing changes and other treatments rather than on paper.
2. Can you give examples of why it is important to use computers in patient care.
- Computer is important in the nursing profession since it help the doctors and nurses to
communicate more efficiently by eliminating misinterpretations of written and verbal
orders. Also, it fastens the work of the nurses such as quickly access of important
information about patient’s health or diagnostic tests results from the electronic health
record (EHR) in which it is needed for the treatment plan. Through computers, it is more
systematic and it increases the efficiency of the nurses to answer questions quickly,
chart comprehensively and look up patient information effortlessly. Lastly, it can protect
the data of the patient no matter what diseases he or she has since there is a law being
followed in order to strengthen the fundamental rights and freedom of the people.
3. Why it is important for nurses to learn about the history of nursing informatics?
- Nursing informatics is accomplished through the use of information structures,
information processes, and information technology. It is important for the nurses to
learn about the history of nursing informatics since they can able to know and
understand the need of technology, sciences and researches to the profession as well
as how it evolves through time in order to support patients, nurses, and other providers
in their decision making in all aspects. It’s also being said that nursing informatics is the
synthesis of nursing science, information science, computer science, and cognitive
science for the purpose of managing and enhancing health care data, information,
knowledge, and wisdom to improve patient care and the nursing profession. Through
this, it shows the importance of nursing informatics such as being updated in the
profession in order to be more efficient in doing nursing services in the society.
