Human Development Index map for Indian states in 2006, as calculated by Government of India and
UNDP India.
This is a list of Indian states by their respective Human Development Index (HDI), as of 2008.
Kerala stands first in Human Development Index among the states in India.
The national average HDI for India in 2008 was 0.467. By 2010, its average HDI had risen to
0.519. UNDP, the sponsor of Human Development Index methodology since 1990, reported
India's HDI to be 0.554 for 2012, an 18% increase over its 2008 HDI. United Nations Declared
India's HDI is 0.586 in 2014, an 5.77% increase over 2012.
There are many ways to calculate HDI, and its calculation is sensitive to base data and
assumptions. Using another approach, UNDP India and Government of India calculated the HDI
nationwide average to be 0.605 in 2006. This data was published by the Indian Government.
Note that the 2007-2008 HDI values in the table below is not based on income as is the UNDP
standard practice for global comparisons, but on estimated consumption expenditure - an
assumption which underestimates the HDI than actual. Further, data was unavailable for the
following states and union territories: Chandigarh, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands,
Daman and Diu, Puducherry, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The HDR covers 187 countries across the world and is published annually by the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP). In the current report, the top five countries ranked in terms of the
HDI are Norway, Australia, Switzerland, Netherlands and the US. The bottom five in this ranking are
Niger, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Chad and Sierra Leone.
India is ranked at 135, among the 'medium development' countries like Egypt, South Africa, Mongolia,
Philippines and Indonesia. Among India's neighbours, Bhutan and Bangladesh too figure in this category.
Pakistan (ranked 146) and Nepal (145) are in the 'low development' category, while Sri Lanka (73) is in
the 'high development' category.
The HDR notes that over 200 million people are affected by natural disasters and 45 million, the largest
number in 18 years, were displaced by conflicts at the end of 2012. These factors also contributed to
denting the improvement in human development.
India’s human development index has improved very slightly but remains among the median countries in
terms of human development, just seven places above Bangladesh, the 2014 UNDP Human
Development Report.
The list bears out once again that human development is linked closely to income. The richest countries
have the best human development index, and the poorest have the worst.
9
Among the BRICS countries, Russia, Brazil and China are in the high HDI category. Russia secured the
highest rank at 57, followed by Brazil at 79 and China at 91. South Africa and India rank in the middle
category, securing 118th and 135th position respectively.
Just over 100 of the total list of 187 countries are in the ‘High’ or ‘Very High’ human development
category. India is bracketed with over 40 other countries in the Medium Human Development category
(index ranging from 0.550 to 0.700).
India’s score for 2013, at 0.586, places it near the bottom of the Medium category -- which is
understandable since it crossed from Low to Medium only six or seven years ago.
When inequality is factored in, India loses nearly 30% of its HDI value. India’s human development
indicators are also substantially different for men and women; the HDI for men alone is much higher at
0.627, while the HDI for Indian women alone is just 0.519. The report also includes estimates for a newer
Multi-dimensional Poverty Index, but since India has not collected new health statistics since 2005, the
Index too could not be updated.
But the country seems to be catching up -- enrolment ratios at primary, secondary and tertiary levels are
now comparable with the average for the Medium category.
The annual increase in
2000-13 has been 1.49, against a Medium category average of 1.17.
However, quite a few countries have managed to improve their index faster than India -- among them
Bangladesh, which now has a better index than Pakistan despite being much poorer (both countries are
ranked somewhat lower than India).
At India’s present rate of progress on human development, it may take some 15 years for India to get to
where China is today, (in the High development category, with an index of 0.719).

Gross domestic product 1.877 trillion USD (2013)
The Gross Domestic Product per capita in India was last recorded at 1262.64 US
dollars in 2014.
This page lists Indian States and union territories by their nominal gross domestic product (GDP). It also
displays each state's level of annual GDP growth, as recorded between 2004 and 2012. as recorded between
2004 and 2014.[1]
Maharashtra has highest GDP about $250 billion (2014) while Lakshadweep has the smallest GDP of $60
million. Andhra Pradeshwas reorganized on 2 June 2014, leaving it 42% smaller, and creating the new state
of Telangana, and the reduced Andhra Pradesh figures are shown.
This is a table of states and union territories of India by their nominal GDP for the financial years 2001–2 to
2013-14, released byPlanning Commission of India, in local currency.[1] Figures for 2014-15 are from the
Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.[2] Revised data for the past years differ from the tables
below. Due to the slide in INR/USD exchange rates from 2011-2013, GDSP has grown in local currency terms
11
but often roughly flat in USD terms. INR rates have varied over the years; as of Jan 1, 2014 it has temporarily
stabilized at roughly 62 Indian rupees per USD.[citation needed]
