Activity Title : Types of Solutions

Learning Target/Competency : Describe the different types of solutions

Values/Graduate Attributes : Learners will become critical thinkers

I. Concept Notes

Solutions mixtures of two or more substances evenly distributed throughout

a single phase.

Components of a Solution
The components of a solution may be solid, liquid, or gas. However,
the resulting phase of the solution normally depends on the phase
of the solvent.
Binary Solution A solution consisting of two (2) components

Solvent The component which is present in large quantity and

serves as the dissolving medium

Solute The component which is present in small quantity

UnSaturated Contains less solute than the solvent’s capacity to

dissolve, meaning that the solution can still dissolve more
solute

Saturated Contains the maximum amount of solute that the solvent

can dissolve at a certain temperature

Supersaturated Contains more dissolved solute than is present in a

saturated solution (crystallization)

II. Example
Solute Solvent Solution Example
Gas Gas Gas Oxygen in Nitrogen, Air
Gas Liquid Liquid Carbon Dioxide in Water
Gas Solid Solid Hydrogen in Palladium
Liquid Liquid Liquid Ethanol in Water
Liquid Solid Solid Mercury in silver
Solid Liquid Liquid Salt in water
Solid Solid Solid Copper in tin (Bronze)

III Exercise:
Direction: Describe using illustration the following types of solution. Color and
label your work (Use backside of the paper for your further illustration).
