ABOUT FUTSAL

Futsal is a form of association soccer and played with five-man teams on a

basketball style court with no walls and a smaller, low-bouncing ball, mostly

played indoor stadiums and a slightly different ball. According to Moitra (2016)

“The USP of the game is that it doesn't have a lot of rules, apart from there being

five players in each team. There are not so many lines on the pitch as there is in a

football, but there are those subtle changes from traditional football.”

HISTORY AND ORIGIN

The origin of futsal can be trace back to Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1930 when Juan

Carlos Ceriani devised a five-a-side version of soccer for youth competion in

YMCAs. The game is played on a court similar to basketball indoors. The term

futsal was created by Alexander Para, knowing that the term soccer in its name

would be hard to obtain in gym since school thought that a soccer ball in a gym

would damage their facilities.

Futsal has conducted a National Championship each year since 1985. Futsal is

establishing itself at the youth level in the U.S. The Boys and Girls Clubs of America

took a strong interest after the Columbia Park Club in San Francisco asked U.S.

Futsal to give a demonstration. The national organization adopted the sport, and

it is now played at about 1,100 Boys and Girls Clubs throughout the U.S. The
American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) also plays the sport in a close

working relationship with U.S. Futsal since 1988.

GENERAL RULES

 Teams may call one one-minute timeout per half (when in possession of

ball, ball out of play).

 There is no overtime, injury time or stoppage time.

 Teams are comprised of four outfield players and one goalkeeper.

 The goalkeeper must wear a different color jersey than the outfield players.

 There is no offsides in futsal.

HOW TO PLAY

At the beginning of the futsal match, a coin toss is used to decide who will start

the match.

A kick-off is used to signal the start of play in futsal and is also used at the start of

the second half and any periods of extra time. It is also used after a goal has been

scored, with the other team starting the play. After a temporary stoppage for any

reason the referee will drop the ball where the play was stopped, provided that,

prior to the stoppage, the ball was in play and had not crossed either the touch

lines or goal lines.

If the ball goes over the goal line or touchline, hits the ceiling, or the play is

stopped by the referee, the ball is out of play. If it hits the ceiling of an indoor

arena, play is restarted with a kick-in to the opponents of the team that last

touched the ball, under the place where it hit the ceiling

There is no offside rule in the game of futsal. Vogel (2015)

Futsal court

Goal

The regulation size futsal goal is 3 metres by 2 metres.

Ball

Futsal ball must have a circumference between 24.61" and 25.0". a smaller, and
bounces less, in order to put up with the hard court.
Jersey

A jersey worn by a member of a team, typically depicting the athlete's name and
team number as well as the logotype of the team. The Keepers need to wear a
different colour than their teammates.
Shorts

This short will keep the player comfortable while playing futsal. Allow easy
circulation of air to prevent too much sweating, and also protect the player from
abrasion burn
Socks

Turf shoes

Turf shoes have small rubber studs or patterns on the outsole to improve traction
on hard, natural fields and artificial turf.
Shin-guard

Shin guards are defensive covering, typically of leather or plastic and frequently
cushioned. It helps the player from injuries while playing.
Goalkeeping glove

A goalie task is to stop the ball. Without a proper pair of gloves you might hurt
your fingers or fail to grip the ball.
