LESSON PLAN GUIDE

Name: Tina McConnell

TEKS: (C2) Objective: (C3)

The learner will measure, test, and record physical 1) After introducing the different properties of matter,
properties of matter, including temperature, mass, the student will observe, identify, and record the
magnetism, and ability to sink or float. properties of matter, such as solid, liquid, and gases.

Specific __ Measureable __Attainable___ Relevant____Time ____

Grade: 3 Subject: Science

Task Analysis: (C4) What lang. must be taught: Properties of Matter Strategy to teach Language: (C4)

What skills must be taught: Frayer Model, Word Wall, Word Games, and
Personal Dictionary
Measuring, testing, and recording of physical properties of matter

Assessment: (C5) Baseline Assessment, Embedded Assessment, and Performance Task

Strategies for Success: (C6) Element of Technology: (C6)

Concept Map on examples of solids, liquid, and gases; Interactive Whiteboard
Venn Diagram to compare; 5 Fingers Strategy

Learning Styles Addressed: (C6) Resources / Materials needed: (C6)

Visual – Pictures of different types of matters Definitions of the different properties of matters, such as
power point with pictures; Word Wall cards for activity
Auditory – Telling the differences of matter about properties of matter; Foldable worksheet for
students to create; rock, container, and water
Kinesethic –
Letting a rock sink in water (hands-on)

Higher Order Questions to ask: (C6)

1. What can you tell me about the physical properties of matter?

2. What happens when you place a rock in a container filled with water? Explain.
3.
What is the difference between the physical properties of solid, liquid, and gas of matter? Compare.

Hook: (C7) Drawing Closure: (C7) 3-2-1

1. Teacher Input / Direct Instruction / Modeling: (C6)

- PowerPoint slide show with pictures of the different physical properties of matter with examples of
solids, liquids, and gases.
- Introduction of an example how to create a foldable worksheet about the different properties of
matter and how to let a rock sink in a container filled with water.

2. Student Activities / Guided Practice: (C6)

- The students will group up and demonstrate what happens to the rock inside the water container
and record the outcome.

3. Independent Practice: (C6)

- The students will create a foldable worksheet with examples of solids, liquids, and gases.

Modifications / Accommodations: (E6) Comprehensible Input Techniques: (R9)

- I will read the properties of matter introduction to the

student and point to the pictures.
- I will give the student individual assistance to complete
the freyer model.
- The student will observe the lab activity instead of
doing the activity while the peers of the group will
explain what happens to the student.
- I will ask the student only one of the three higher order
questions, instead of three questions.
