A Tool for Self-Directed Learning

One of the most important materials you will need for your course is a computer with internet access. There may be times
when you also need a printer. Use this guide to build a time management tool targeting computer access windows. The
process has two parts: first you will do some research to discover what’s available near you, then you will create a
custom schedule for managing computer access. This also serves as an emergency back up plan in case your normal
equipment fails. No need to panic, you have a plan, just move to a back up location and keep working.
Step 1: Fill in the My Computer Resources Quick Reference Chart (next page)
Step 2: Customize Your Schedule Template (page 3).

1. Use the data you gathered on the Quick Reference Chart to mark the blank schedule with specific locations.
Indicate all the times when computers or wifi access are available.
2. You can’t be in two places at once. Use a shade of gray to shade any time slots when you have regularly
scheduled items like class, practice, etc. Leave the names of any available computer locations visible. That way if
something is cancelled, you can make the most of your time.
3. If you have more than one option in a time slot, rank your top two in order of use value. For example, if you’d
prefer to go to the library than a coffee shop because it’s quieter and has a printer put 1) Old Quarry Library; 2)
Joanna’s Café. Or, if transportation is a factor you might rank based on convenience.
4. You can use colors, or abbreviations like Wifi (W), printers (P).
5. If you rotate between home(s) and/or a part time job, you might find it helpful to use your weekly template as a
planner to adapt to new commitments.
Final Steps:
1. After you fill out the schedule, check for gaps in wifi access of more than 24 hours. Anywhere you find a gap ask,
Where and when can I download or print items in advance to work off line? Highlight those windows of
opportunity on your calendar template to remind yourself to prioritize carefully. You may want to buy a thumb drive
to store files when working off line.
2. Mark times on the calendar when you can take advantage of the online Writing Center consultations. You need to
use Canvas to take advantage of those. Mark those times with “UWC.”
3. Save the plan. Keep it someplace convenient for quick reference and easy updates.
