Child/Tama: Usaid. Teacher/ Kaiako: Naema. Date: July / Hōngongoi 2019.

Asalam-o-Alakum! Kia Ora, Usaid, your last

story was about how you have developed an
understanding of the centre’s routines and
now you are showing responsibility to look
after yourself and the environment as you put
your lunch box and drink bottle away without
any assistance and tidy-up the play-dough. It is
also evident that you are developing some
confidence in yourself to communicate to the
staff and children as you are using some words to make requests. During these last weeks
we have supported you to develop ways to express yourself appropriately. Therefore,
during these last few weeks we have encouraged you to sit for mat time and listen to the
teachers daily. We have also been having conversations about how to greet one another in
maori, Aribic and sign language. We are learning about days, of the week in English and sign
language, and reading stories and songs. We are also reciting surah fathia, surah Iklas, surah
faliq, surag nas and surah Quarish during hajj for the Islamic programme.

We are also encouraging you to have a rest after lunch. The last few
weeks you prefer to play on the side and not rest but when you
found out that if you don’t rest will not be able to go outside.
Because children need some rest during the day if they do not rest it
means they have to stay inside so that they don’t get grumpy.
Therefore, the last two days in a row you did not go outside, so
today you laid down after lunch to rest but soon got distracted by
talking. When I reminded you that you have to rest otherwise you
will be too tired to go outside, you laid down for quite some time
and read a book. After some time resting and reading a book you came to me to read the
book you were holding at rest time. Together we had a great time reading “My first word
book: Out and About.” I noticed you wanted to know the book’s contents and you could
recognize many pictures and could say them like, shoes, jacket, and hat. You explained a few
things non verbally like when you put your hand on the eye to indicate glasses. When I
asked about the lawn mower you made a sound, “zuuu, zuuu.”
During these last few weeks I also setup the pretend tea as an opportunity for you to
express your feeling and ideas using a wide range of materials. I noticed you were repeating
the words after me and we will also support you using vocabulary in context. 12/7/2019

What is happening?
Observation shows Usaid, you have been showing responsibility to look after yourself and to
develop the understanding that you need some rest time. You also understand that laying

An-Nur childcare and develop the understanding of how things work at preschool. Reading
books and pretend play also gave you the confidence in yourself to communicate with the
staff and children as you were using some words to make requests. Ka pai to mahi/ good job
