Zayn Settling in Preschool!

Child/Tama: Zayn. Teacher/ Kaiako: Naema. Date: 24th July / Hōngongoi 2019

Asalam-o-Alaikum, Kia Ora Zayn! Last week you were away for a few days as
you had caught a cold. Today was your first day back at preschool. You were
unsure about your surroundings and also very upset when your mum left. I
gave you a cuddle and assured you that you are here to have fun and learn. I
also assured you that you would go home to see your mum at the end of the
day. I asked you if you wanted me to read you a story. You nodded your head
and sat in my lap to listen to the story. It took you some time to become
comfortable. I mentioned to you that your brother Sohail was in this preschool
and how much of a good time he had with us. This conversation gave you little
relief and you felt much better.

After lunch you had your bottle and fell asleep in my lap it took me time to
safely transfer you to the bed without interrupting your sleep. The next day
when your mum dropped you off at school you were not very happy but you
settled very quickly when I offered you your bottle. You pointed to the
microwave and gave me a non-verbal sign to heat it up for you. I took you there
and encouraged and guided you to put on the timer. I saw a spark in your eyes
and you were very happy to get the bottle from microwave. You laid down in
my lap and guzzled the whole bottle and felt good. Soon you gained trust and
happily came down from my lap to pick a book from the shelf. You asked me to
read it to you. When I finished the story you got out of my lap and it did not
take you too long to settle in the preschool to explore.
What is happening:
During this week I observed you showed great interest in painting, you loved
spending time at the play-dough table. I noticed you love sweeping the floor
inside and raking and collecting leaves in the playground and throwing them in
the rubbish bin.

What is Next:
We will continue to support you as you deepen your relationships with
teachers and other children here at preschool by spending time with you as we
explain how new experiences work. Zayn we will follow your interest and will
keep a reciprocal relationship with you to settle you well in the preschool.
