Mental health matters; teachers urged to manage

“Mental disorder is not curable, yet it is
treatable and manageable,” remarked Mrs.
Precious Manliguez, the Executive Director
of Philippine Mental Health, before the
listening teachers on day 3 of MPRE.
She stressed that once a person devel-
ops a mental disorder, he or she can-
not go back to the original state of
mind he/she was in. When she
said that it was ‘treatable,’ it
meant it can be controlled.
She also delineated the dif-
ferences of mental health and
mental awareness. According to
the World Health Organization
(WHO), mental health is defined as a state of well- being in
which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can
cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively
and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.
On the other hand, a mental illness or psychiatric disorder, is
a behavioral or mental pattern that causes significant distress
or impairment of personal functioning.
Self-management, Manliguez added, is very crucial in
maintaining mental health, especially in a highly stressful
job like teaching. If a teacher notices symptoms of mental
disorder, he or she has to seek professional help to break the
30-day rule so that intervention can be made immediately
and arrest the cause, thereby disallowing the disorder to set
in.

guez Elementary School stressed the im-
portance of teachers being models of

During her talk about dress code for
both teaching and non-teaching personnel
as well as the administrators of the De-
partment of Education, Mrs. Anhao re-
viewed on the prescribed uniforms and the
