“The Effectiveness of Internet on the everyday classes of Grade 6 Students in DASJMS”

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Internet is one of the things that can help improve students learning and

achievement. . Internet became one of the most important tools that has a great contribution on

today's success. According to Indiacelebrating.com, “Internet is a network of networks which

connects computers worldwide through the standardized communication protocols (TCP/IP)

using which we can access information at any computer.” Internet is the invention of modern and

high technology science. It provides us amazing facilities of searching any information from any

corner of the world by anyone. It has been an essential part of our life. Which we can say that

without it we may face a lot of problems in our daily lives. According to Emeka and Nyeche

(2016) the internet today is a worldwide entity whose nature cannot be easily or simply defined.

To many, the internet is a large computer network linking together millions of smaller computers

at numerous sites in various countries belonging to thousands of business, government, research,

educational and other organizations. To the internet users, the internet is a global community. In

today world, the internet plays vital role in the teaching research and learning process in

academic institutions.

Actually teachers can really use the internet as teaching tool to improve student’s

accomplishment. Internet can change the way things are done in school. Internet can be an

essential tool for facilitating academic activities. The services provided by internet can have a

major impact in schools, in organization and in teaching and learning methods. For students, they

employ the internet in educational matters such as writing papers, searches for answers to

questions and communicating with classmates on homework. Some teachers are afraid of using

internet in teaching because they don’t have full knowledge about computer and due to lack of

experience. If teachers effectively use the internet in classroom, students can really relate and

focus on the lesson that will be given and lesson won’t be time consuming According to

have been teaching for years and dont want to incorporate something new into their time tested

lesson plans. Some schools are finishing some instructions to incorporate technology into their

syllabi and when it is poorly taught that the technology is not used at optimal level. Any teacher

given high tech programs and expected to teach it in the classrooms deserves proper training and

sometimes it is not provided.

Therefore, though chalkboard, textbooks, radio, television, have been used for

educational purpose over years, none has quite impacted on the educational process like the

computers. Internet allow people to successfully apply the existing knowledge and produce new

knowledge. Using the internet in teaching and research makes the communication between the

students and the teachers more convenient and interesting.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aimed to know the effectiveness of Internet om the everyday classes of

the Grade VI students in DASJMS.

1. What are the positive effects of internet on the everyday classes of grade 6 students in

DASJMS?

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The study focuses only on knowing the effect of internet on the everyday classes

of grade 6 student in DASJMS.

We started at _______________, and end on _______________

The number of students that is expected to be interviewed ranges from 30 to 40

students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The beneficiaries of this study are the following;

Students. This research would be beneficial to the grade 6 students in DASJMS because they will

know the positive and negative effects of the internet on their everyday classes. They will

discover how to improve and reach their school goals and also to make their school work easier

with the use of internet. As well as, to make them realize their limitation when their using too

much internet on schools.

Teachers. This study will also help the teachers in DASJMS. Enable for them to know that

internet can be the best tool in teaching. To give them idea that internet can help in the process of

education and research and it should be cannot ignored.

Parents. Also, to the parents of Grade VI students because it won't be hard to them to teach their

children because of the use of internet on the studies of their children's.

DEPED. They will know if they will consider and required the use of internet in all schools.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following terms used in the study were defined operationally.

“Internet”, is a global computer providing a variety of information and communication

facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.

“Effectiveness of Internet” refers the degree to which internet is successful in producing

the desire effect.

“Teaching tools” refers to some things or devices that teachers use to enhance lecturing.

“Use of Internet” refers to someone’s exposure to internet classified as frequent,

occasional and non-use.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A research conducted by Luambano and Nawe (2004), on internet use by students of

the University of Dar es Salaam. The study was to determine if students work using the internet

for academic purposes, investigate the level of student’s access to the internet, as well as the

problems students faced in internet use. The survey method was used as the basic method for

data collection. The activity revealed that degree of student’s access to the internet was low, and

the major reason was that at the time of the study, computers with internet facilities were

insufficient. The findings also spill that the students who had access to the internet were not

using it effectively. Rather, they used it for communication with friends and relatives more than

for academic purposes. The reason for this was not having enough skills required for the

effective use of the internet.

According to Oghenetega and Igere (2014), over the years the internet became a very

important instrument for facilitating academic activities in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The

information and communication technology revolution is sweeping through the world and the

gale as even caught up with developing countries like Nigeria. Internet can broadly be defined as

worldwide network of computers communicating via a agreed upon protocol (rules for exchange

of information). It provides access to the most diversified source of information hosted by

individuals and various organisation worlds wide on a vast network of servers (Ogungbeni, et al,

2016). Various studies have found that the internet use can have positive benefits on educational

achievement (Chen & Fu, 2009). One puzzling question is the effective impact of the internet on

student performance.
