The changes made by Mitsubishi is important because, the company’s behavior

towards their employees, especially women and other racial groups, in the past was
unlawful discrimination which violates Equal Employment Opportunity law. The
discrimination that the company has been ignoring already caused them to pay $34
million for settling sexual harassment lawsuit and a multi-million-dollar settlement to
African American and Hispanic employees. If the company continues to ignore the issue
and keeps operating this way they would be brought to court again spending millions of
dollars to an issue they could prevent through proper Human Resource Management

The company’s conduct on the issue of discrimination brought upon a negative

image to their company, making their employees embarrassed to wear their working
clothes and uniform with the business’ logo on it. If Mitsubishi does not make a step
towards eliminating the discrimination, against women and other racial groups, that is
happening inside their company and factories they would be shut down quickly. There is
a great importance in having a secure place to work. If a company is an Equal
Employment Opportunity company, then they will have a better reputation and appeal to
job applicants and more people would want to stay working there. This will also help the
Human Resource department because employees will feel secure, confident and
comfortable with sharing issues and consulting about concerns they may have, it is
reassuring to employees when they feel that they have a place to go when they need
help.

Disparate treatment occurs when members of a group are treated in a different

way from others. In the company and factories of Mitsubishi, disparate treatment was so
evident in the past. Women, African American and Hispanic employees were being
treated differently on purpose by others. According to the case given, sexual graffiti was
written on the fenders of cars being assembled before they passed female production
workers, pornographic photos hung on the walls, and male workers taunted women. Not
only local female employees but also women from other racial groups who works there
felt anxious and harassed for specific factors relating to gender. Disparate treatment in
Mitsubishi made an impact to the groups of people under such treatment.

Impact of disparate treatment or disparate impact was present in the

discrimination case of Mitsubishi. Disparate impact occurs when people who are part of
a protected category are not represented equally or not represented at all resulting to
employment decisions that would work to their disadvantage. In Mitsubishi, disparate
impact was presented by women being sexually harassed and racial groups being
treated unfairly. It was mentioned in the case that women employees has complained
about how they are treated but they were not promoted nor entertained some of those
who made inquiries were even fired. African American and Hispanic and other racial
groups of employees claimed that they were being discriminated.

These are the factors that affected the case of Mitsubishi where they were sued
for the lack of compliance with the Equal Employment Opportunity law costing them
millions of dollars.
