Lesson Plan
Algebra II
60 Minutes
Properties of Exponents and Logarithms

Standards (include NCTE/NCSS/NGSS/NCTM/ACTFL):

• CC.9-12.N.RN.1: Extend the properties of exponents to rational exponents. Explain how
the definition of the meaning of rational exponents follows from extending the properties
of integer exponents to those values, allowing for a notation for radicals in terms of
rational exponents.
• CC.9-12.N.RN.2: Extend the properties of exponents to rational exponents. Rewrite
expressions involving radicals and rational exponents using the properties of exponents.
• CC.9-12.F.BF.5: Build new functions from existing functions. Understand the inverse
relationship between exponents and logarithms and use this relationship to solve
problems involving logarithms and exponents.
Educational Objectives:
• The students will be able to learn about the various properties of exponents.
• The students will be able to learn about the various properties of logarithms.
• The students will be able to apply the academic language for this section.

Assessment on Learning:

• The students will be formally assessed by the use of a Kahoot trivia game the properties
of exponents and logarithms.

Central Focus

• The students will learn about the properties of exponents and logarithms.

Academic Language
Language Function (select 1):

Analyze Compare/Contrast Construct Describe Evaluate

Examine Identify Interpret Justify Locate

Explain Prove Argue Synthesize

Identify a learning task from your plan that provides students with opportunities to practice
using the language function identified above:
The students will be able to examine expressions containing exponents. Students will
then identify which properties that they are required to use in order to simplify an expression
contain exponents. Students will also be required to examine a logarithm function and identify
which property of logarithms they need to use. Students will identify that a logarithm and also be
written as an exponent.

Additional Language Demands. Given the language function and learning task identified above,
describe the following associated language demands (written or oral) students need to understand
and/or use:

Vocabulary:
• Real number- numbers that are not imaginary numbers
• Integer- a real number that is not a fraction but can be positive and negative
• Rational number- a real number that can be expressed as a fraction
• Irrational number- a real number that cannot be expressed as a fraction
• Exponents- an expression that is raised to an expression
• Logarithms- inverse function of an exponent
Plus at least one of the following:
Syntax-
• An exponent is written as the following: 𝑎𝑏 where a and b are real numbers
• A logarithm is written as the following: 𝑦 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑎 𝑥 if and only if: 𝑥 = 𝑎 𝑦 where a
is greater than 0.
Materials:
• Textbook
• Kahoot Presentation
• White board markers
• White board erasers
• Teacher’s notes
• Pencils

Anticipatory Set/ Attention Getter:

• The attention getter for this lesson will be that I will begin class by getting the students
ready and motivated to play the Kahoot trivia game at the end of class. I will announce
that at the end of class, we will have a Kahoot game. I will have students solve a few
problems involving the properties of exponents and logarithms. This will allow me to
challenge students by having them solve a problem that they probability have never seen
before. Also, this will allow me to evaluate students’ previous knowledge of exponents
and logarithms.

• “Good morning, class! How was everyone’s weekend? Today we will learn about
properties of exponents and logarithms! Let us first begin by solving the following
problems on the board. Try your best to solve it. At the end of class, we will be playing
Kahoot to review what we learned today.”
Questions to Ask
1. Comprehension: What is the difference between an exponent and a logarithm?
2. Analysis: How can we simplify an expression containing exponents?
3. Knowledge: What is the correct way to write an exponent?
4. Comprehension: What does any number raised to 0 gives us?
5. Application: How can we use exponents with more complex expressions?

Sequence of Events (include time needed):

1. Anticipatory Set (10 minutes)
a. I will begin class by writing examples of exponents and logarithms. Students will
be able to work together with other students to simplify the various expressions.
With this activity, I would be able to model the manner in which to solve the
problem on the board and it will also allow me to evaluate student’s prior
knowledge of trigonometric equations.
2. Lesson on the Properties of Exponents and Logarithms
a. Once we have completed the anticipatory set, I will transition to teach the content
for today. I will model the manner in which we can use the various properties of
exponents to simplify expressions containing exponents. I will also model to the
class the various properties of logarithms. Once I have completed this, I will
explain to the class the way in which we can transform a logarithm to an
exponent. I will also model the manner to simplify an expression containing
logarithms.
3. Kahoot Game (40 minutes)
a. Once we are done learning about the various properties of exponents and
logarithms, the entire class would be able to apply their skills that they have
learned from today’s lesson to a Kahoot game. In this game, students will be
assessed on their knowledge from this lesson. Each student has a chance to win
the game. The quicker someone answers with the correct answer, the more points
that individual will receive. Within each question, I will be able to identify the
number of students who correctly answered the question. I will also be able to
model and explain each problem. This will allow students to identify their
mistakes.
4. Conclusion (10 minutes)
a. I will conclude the lesson, by reviewing once again the material for today.

Conclusion/Summary:
• To summarize this lesson, I will review with the students the various properties of
exponents and logarithms.
• “Before we leave today, let us review a few important things from today’s lesson. What
is your favorite property of exponents? How are exponents and logarithms related? I hope
everyone enjoyed today’s lesson. Great job today everyone!”
