What, who and how are question words.
What’s your name?
Who’s this?
How are you?
In a question, what asks about things and who asks about people. We say How are you? When we meet
someone. How old asks about age.

Practice: Fill the blanks with (what, who and how) and then practice the conversation.

What is this?

What’s this? Is a question. We use it to find out about things we can answer with it’s a.

A and An
A and an are articles. They come before singular nouns.
It’s a pencil.
It’s a book.
We use an before a, e, I, o, or u.
It’s an apple?

My and your
My and your are possessive adjectives. They say who owns something.

We use is to identify someone or something. Is comes from verb be.
Ex: This is Teacher Sayed Mahmood Adeeb. This is my ID card.

Is this…? Is a yes/no questions. We change the word order in questions.


Statement Questions
This is your book. Is this your book?

Yes, it is and No, it isn’t are short answers. We can use them if the questions begin with is this….?
Is this your car? Yes, it is. No, it isn’t. isn’t = is not

Are:
We use are to identify things and people. Are comes from the verb be. Here are identifies two or more
thing or people.
Example:
These are eyes. The eyes are blue.
This nose is red. The noses are red.

Practice: Write sentences. Use is or are.

This and these


This and these are demonstratives. We use them for things that are close to us.
Singular (one thing or person)  This is my kite.
Plural (two or more things or people)  These are my Pencils.

He and She
He and she are subject pronouns.
We use he when we talk about males (boys and men). We use she when we talk about females. (girls
and women). We use it when we talk about a thing or an object or an animal.
Other subject pronouns are: I, you, we, they.

Practice: Use subject pronouns complete the conversation and then practice in the calls.

Komail: Who are Ali and Hassan?

Komiail: ______ are students at ALA.

Questions with is:


Is he …? Is she ….? Are yes/ no questions. We change the word order in questions.
He’s a policeman. (Subject pronoun + to be + Noun+.)
Is he a policeman? (to be + subject pronoun + nount + ?)

We can use short answers if the question begins Is he …? Or Is she…?


Is she a nurse?  Yes, she is.
Is she a vet? No, she isn’t.

Where’s the bag? It’s on the swing.
Where’s….? is a wh-question. We can use it to ask about the place or position of something. We can
answer with it’s….
We can use where ‘s …? To ask about the place or position of someone. Then we can answer with He’s…
or she’s ….

In, on and under


The pencil case is in the bag. The bag is on the table. The pen is under chair.

On, in and under are prepositions of place. They tell us where something and someone is.

I’m and You’re


Rezayee: I’m Your Dad! Komail: You aren’t my dad!
Fatima: You’re my classmates? Komail: Yes! I’m Komail, your classmates and you’re Fatima.

I and you are subject pronouns. We use I for ourselves. We use you for a person we are talking to. The
pronouns are:
Singular (I, you, he, she, it) Plural (we, you, they)

Komial’s and Fatima’s


Hassan: Are you Komial’s dad? ADEEB: Yes. I’m Komail’s father.
‘s tells us who has something. It’s called the possessive ‘s. The mark (‘) is called an apostrophe.
Example: This is Komail’s book. This is Ali’s brother.

Are they rules? Yes, they are. Are they students? No, they aren’t. They are teachers.

His and her:


His and her are possessive adjectives. They say who owns something.
He (male) His book, his pen, his t-shirt, his car, his house, his English teacher.
She (female) her book, her pen, her t-shirt, her car, her house, her English teacher.
The other possessive adjectives are:

Where are…?
Where are….? Is a wh-questions. We can use it to ask the place or location of more than one person or
thing.
We use where’s…? to ask the place or location of one person or thing. (where’s = where is)
Example:
Where’s the manager? He is in the office.
Where’s the doctor? He is in the hospital.
Where are the students? They are in the classroom.

Practice: Complete the Conversation with (where’s and where’re) and then practice in the class.

Mum: They are in the Garden.

Is she in …? Is he in ….? Are they in ….?


Is she in …? Is a yes/ no question. We can use it to ask if a person or thing is in the place we think.
Example:
Where’s Komail? Is he in the living room?
Where’s Norjis? Is she in the classroom?
Where are Komail and Norjis? Are they in the dining room?

Practice: Complete the conversation with ( Is she in …? Is he in ….? And Are they in ….?) and then
practice in the classroom.
Dad: Where’s Komial? _______________ the living room?
Mum: No, he isn’t. He is in the garden.
Dad: Where’s Norjis? _______________ the kitchen?
Mum: No, she isn’t. She is in the garden, too.
Dad: Where are Grandma and grandpa? Are they in the dining room?
Mum: Yes, they are in the dining room.

Upstairs and downstairs


Upstairs and downstairs are adverbs. They tell us where someone or something is in a house. Upstairs
means at the top of the house. Downstairs means at the bottom of the house.

Practice: Read the conversation and practice them in the class.


Guest: Where is Komail? Mum: He’s in the upstairs.
Guest: Where is Grandma? Mum: She’s in the living room.
Guest: Where is the bathroom? Mum: It’s in the downstairs.
Guest: Where are dining room and the kitchen? Mum: They are in the downstairs.

I’ve got and I haven’t go


I’ve got says that you have or own something. I haven’t got says that you don’t have or own something.
Example: I’ve got a book. It’s my book.
I’ve got = I have got
I haven’t got a pen. I haven’t got= I have not got

Practice: Complete the sentences with I’ve got and I haven’t got.

Have you got…? Yes, I have. No, I haven’t.


Have you got ….? Is a yes/no questions. We can use it to ask about the things people have. Yes, I have.
And No, I haven’t are short answers. We can use them if the question begins Have you got…?
Examples:
Have you got your lunch box?
Have you got your books?
Have you got your pencil case?

This is Komail. He’s got short hair. He’s got brown eyes. This is Komial’s friend. Her name’s Kamila. She
hasn’t got short hair. She’s got long hair. She’s got green eyes.
He’s got, she’s got, and it’s got say that a person or thing has or owns something.
Example: She’s got a doll. It’s her doll.
…’s got = has got
We also use them to say how people and things look. …. Hasn’t got = has not got

Affirmative Negative
He’s got short hair. He hasn’t got long hair.
It’s got four sides. It hasn’t got four sides.

I like and I don’t like
I like and I don’t like are present simple forms of the verbs like. We use the present simple to talk about
things that are true now.

Adjectives:
Komail: My pen is green. Hassan: My hat is small.
Green and small are adjectives. Adjectives describe things and people. Adjectives stay the same.
Exmaple: It’s big. They’re big.

1. I have blue and green pens. They are small and beautiful.
2. She has orange jacket. It’s tense and uncomfortable.
3. My house has a big yard. It has two tall trees, short grasses and worm weather.

Do you like…?
Mum: Do you like carrots? Komail: No, I don’t.
Mum: Do you like meat? Komail: Yes, I don’t.
Mum: Do you like fish? Komail: Yes, I do.
Do you like…? Is a yes/no question. The short answers are yes, I do or No, I don’t. It is the present simple
interrogative farm.
Do you like + Noun+? Do you like apples?  Yes, I do.
Do you like bananas?  No, I don’t.

There’s and there are:

There’s an office in the ADEEB Learning Academy.
We use there’s and there are to talk about things around us. We use there’s to talk about one thing or
person. Example: There’s a bed in the bedroom.
We use there’re to talk about two or more things or people. Examples: There are four rooms in my house.
Practice: Use there is and there are complete the sentences. Repeat after your teacher.

2. ___________________ 20 chairs in the classroom.
3. ___________________ 20 students in a classroom.
4. ____________ a teacher to teach student in the classroom.

Is there…?
Is there …? Is a yes/no questions. We can use Is there…? To ask about things around us.
We change the word order in questions. There’s a pillow on the bed.  Is there a pillow on the bed?
Yes, there is and No, there isn’t are short answers. We can use them if the questions begins Is there …?

Can and Can’t


Example: A bird can fly. I can’t fly. I can run! A snake can’t run.
Can means that you are able to do something. It always comes before another verb.
Example: Komail can speak English. Kamila can write. They can draw a picture.
Can’t means that you are not able to do something. Example:
A snake can’t run. It can’t run. Kamila can’t fly. She can’t fly.
Practice: Ask and answer the questions.
Komail: Can you spell Your name? Fatima: Yes, I can. It is F-a-t-i-m-a.
Komail: Can you ride a horse? Fatima: No, I can’t.
Komail: Can you wash the car? Fatima: Yes, I can wash the car very well.
Komail: Can you ride a bike? Fatima: Yes, I can ride a bike.

Let’s
We use let’s as a way of suggesting to somebody that you do something together. Let’s always comes
before another verb.

Imperative:
Stop! Come! Run!
Stop, come and run are imperative forms. We can use an imperative to tell somebody to do something.

! This is an exclamation mark. We often use it at the end of the sentence when the verb is an
imperative.

Practice: Repeat the following sentences after your instructor.


1. Find the book!
2. Open the door!
3. Come here!
4. Do the homework!
5. Erase the board!
6. Wash your hand!
7. Come on time!
8. Polish your shoes!

Negative imperative:
Don’t forget your homework, students. Don’t run in the dining room.
Don’t forget and don’t run are negative imperative. We can use a negative imperative to tell somebody not
to do something. We use don’t and a verb.

Run! Don’t run.
Look! Don’t look.
