Promoting Cleanliness of Water Resources in Exchange for Sustainable Environment

Water is the main resources that people need the most to live and survive. There are many uses of water
like in irrigation in agriculture, household agendas, industrial, and environmental recreation. However,
some individuals are destroying the water resources through throwing trashes, toxic chemicals or waste
even a dead body can be found in a river, lake or oceans. Water pollution has been increasing every year
as the population of every country grew fast as well. Pollutants of water may threaten the environment
as the water wastes decomposed new bacteria that can harm the health of the people that surrounds the
natural waters.

One of the main reasons of children’s death under 5 years of age are caused by unhealthy environment.
Every year, the number of death caused by improper hygiene, contaminated water and alike is increasing.
According to Dr. Margaret Chan, “A polluted environment is a deadly one- particularly for young children”.
Water pollution can cause health problems such as vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes and alike. There are so
many sources of water pollution like discharge of untreated raw sewage from households, chemicals from
factories and oil spills. My advocacy is “Promoting Cleanliness of Water Resources in Exchange for
Sustainable Environment”, my goal is to raise awareness about the bad effects of polluted water, to give
some ways on how to prevent water pollution and to start practicing proper sanitation.

According to the Management Bureau of the Philippines, “out of the 127 freshwater bodies that they
examined, 47% has the excellent water condition however, the remaining 40% had only fair water
condition and 13% resulted as poor water quality”. If I would be given a chance to make my advocacy into
actions, I’ve come up with the implementation flow especially for those people who are near or living
around the freshwater bodies. First is the restoration project wherein cleaning operation and sanitation
and health are involved; it’s main goal is to develop the condition of water bodies, to recover the
environmental and human condition and to be able to see that water resources is not a dumpsite. Second
is to relocate, its objective is to encourage the people who lives near the polluted water bodies to move
or to transfer to another house to prevent sickness and to prevent the water resources more polluted
then they will be given an opportunity to have a job so that they will not hesitate to leave. Finally, the
Outreach program wherein its objective is to establish good sanitation and solid waste management
practices among different communities through education and actual participation and for them to be
discipline enough to reduce the effects of polluted water resources.

Having an experience to work in a cleaning project of water resources back in 2016 makes me realize the
importance of every drop of clean water. We should know on how to maximize and how to use it properly.
There is a quotation from anonymous person that really stuck on my mind he/she states that, “A drop of
water is worth more than a sack of gold to a thirsty man”.
