CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background Of The Study

Based on observations made in class VIII SMP Nasrani 1 on July 19, 2019
during the English class, there are problems in learning activities. First, students
motivation when learning activities is still low especially in writing . This
condition is proven by the number of students who perform other activities such
as talking, joking, even get sleepy during the learning activity. Second, most of
the students' achievement is still low, which based on the value of daily tests as
much as 65% have not reached the minimum completeness criteria. Third,
learning resources used by teachers and students is not adequate due to the lack of
teaching materials that can be used to support the learning curriculum revised
edition 2013. Fourth, learning strategies used by English teachers have not varied.
In learning activities, teachers are still using methods that are tedious, which is
expository, lectures method and assignments, so that learning activity was
dominated by the teacher. Yet every subject matter would require the implement
of varied strategies for learning goals are different.

Based on the problems, needs to caried out the research on the


implementation of a new learning strategies by teachers. The researcher interest to
conduct "The Implementation Of Pen-Pal Project To Teach Writing Skill Of
Recount Text At The Eight Class Of SMP Nasrani 1 Medan".

Pen Pal is a term that describes an activity of exchanging letters to others


to be friends with someone. There are several types of pen pal but in this study
only using the traditional pen pal which known as Snail-mail in its
implementation, traditional pen pal can be a very good way to motivate students
in writing. In contrast to mouse-pal or key-pal that all of their writing, made and
send via E-mail, in traditional pen pal the letter made on a piece of paper that send
via E-mail. This can be a unique activity for students because students are
familiar with the use of email in their gadgets in this era. In this letter, students
share information about themselves and their interests. The use of pen pal can
motivate the willingness of students in writing in a humorous way. This strategy
has been widely used in a variety of formal educational settings and has been used
with participants from all age groups and levels of language proficiency (Larotta
and Serrano, 2011). Writing letters to pen pals allow students to share their
experience with their pen pals. A study has been conducted by Vera Mello (1998)
provide evidence that the pen pal project is an effective way to help students to
improve their writing skills. The findings indicate that this project gives the
students improve the skills of reading, writing, and cognitive, namely the skills to
interact with others. The project also gives them the opportunity to communicate
effectively in English for Writing letters to pen pals allow students to share their
experience with their pen pals, express ideas and thoughts on a particular topic
they like. Taking into results above of the study, it can be suggested that the
project pen pal has to implemented for eighth graders, because they have to
improve their ability to write especially those in writing a recount text which can
motivate them to create their own text based on their experiences in the past.

1.2. Limitation of the problem

Learning strategies used by English teachers particularly in writing has not varied.

1.3. Formulation of the problem

1. How does implement learning strategies pen pal project by English


teachers to improve students' writing especially those in writing recount
text?
2. How do students respond to the implementation of the pen pal project in
terms of writing recount texts ?

1.4. Objective of the study

In accordance with the formulation of the problem, the purposes of this study are
as follows:

1. Knowing the influence of implementation pen pal project by English


teacher on students writing motivation class VIII particularly in writing
recount texts.
2. Knowing the class VIII students respond to the application of the pen pal
project especially to write recounttexts.

1.5. Benefits of the study

1. Teachers can develop professionalization as it can show that he able to


improve its management of learning, especially in recount text lesson.
2. Foster interest and participation of students in the process of learning to
write thereby increasing the expected learning outcomes.
3. This research can be used as a reference for further researcher in
subsequent studies that take the theme of development of the application
of the pen pal project.

1.6. Theoritical review

Based on the research theme has taken, three main theoretical studies are
provided. First, the theory of writing about typing, process and purpose. Second,
the theory of learning strategies of pen pals which consists of definition, types and
its application. Third, the theory that discusses the recount text which consists of
definition, the generic structure and types.
CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

2.1. Research Design

This study is design descriptive using a qualitative approach to the data generated
is in the form of words and sentences.

2.2. Research Subjects

Subjects in this study consist of teachers and students of class VIII SMP Nasrani 1
Medan in academic year 2019/2010. Selection of research subjects, English
teachers using purposive sampling technique. Meanwhile, for the eighth grade
students using snowball sampling technique.

2.3. Instrument Data Collection

This study is design descriptive qualitative approach, the instrument can be used
is in the form of observation, interviews, questionnaire and documentation.

2.4. Data Analysis Techniques

In this study, researchers used an interactive data analysis technique. This


technique consists of three stages of activity that must be taken by the researcher,
the presentation, reduction and drawing conclusions.

2.5. Check Validity of Data Techniques

The data has been collected, has to check the validity of the data. As for the data
checking techniques used credibility test include triangulation techniques and
sources. Triangulation techniques can be done by comparing data researcher
observation, interviews and documentation. Then, triangulation source can be
done by comparing data of teacher informant interviews A with B.
