Lesson 4: Critical Thinking and Comprehension

Students will look at tolerance and social justice in school. Students will be asked to think critically about
the decisions students make, looking at situations from another person’s perspective, whether one person can
make a difference and how to increase tolerance. Students will read the article “Daily Mix it Up Lunch
Yields Big Shares” (https://www.tolerance.org/magazine/daily-mix-it-up-lunch-yields-big-shares) and in
their small groups come up with three ‘Mix it Up’ suggestions for students to use in their classes, at after
school activities, and at lunch. Students will be challenged to engage in one of the suggestions and as
homework write about the experience and submit as an entry ticket.

Reflection 1:

Reflection 2:
Why do you think some people in school do not know how to show tolerance for others? Discuss a situation
in which you witnessed someone showing little tolerance? Discuss a situation in which you witnessed
someone showing a great deal of tolerance? How did both of these situations make you feel? Compare your
feelings to an example of tolerance or a lack of tolerance from The Outsiders. Be sure to properly cite the
page numbers of your examples.
