Activity: Exercise 4 Descriptive Statistics

Instruction: Download population data at the barangay level of your respective

provinces from Philippines Statistics Authority
(https://www.psa.gov.ph/content/highlights-philippine-population-2015-census-
population). Then, following the instructional video from the course webpage, calculate
different descriptive statistics for each municipality of your province. Interpret your
results.

Data Interpretation:

According to the 2015 data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), Camarines Norte has a
total population of 583,313. The Capital of the Province which is the City of Daet has the highest
(Maximum) population in the province with 104,799 while the Municipality of San Vicente
having the lowest (Minimum) with only 10,396. This mainly explains the high value of the range
which is the difference between the highest value and the lowest value. One of the main factors
why Daet City has the highest population in the province because the city is the Capital of the
Province and is the center for trade, business, religious, cultural, industrial, commercial,
education, and financial attract migrants to the City. The generated descriptive statistics of the
Province shows that the standard deviation for the Population in the province is 29747.97757. A
high standard deviation shows that there is a large variation in the group being studies. It also
shows that the standard deviation is mainly affected by outliers which also affects the mean. In
this case, the high population of Daet City with regards to the lowest population of San Vicente
greatly affects the result of standard deviation. In terms of kurtosis and skewness, the 2015
population of Camarines Norte has a kurtosis of 0.289163675which indicates a low kurtosis.
Kurtosis is a measure of whether the data are heavy-tailed or light-tailed relative to a normal
distribution. A low kurtosis means that the data has light tails or lack of outliers. In terms of
Skewness, the 2015 population data of Camarines Norte has a skewness of 0.870704723.
Skewness is a measure of symmetry, or more precisely, the lack of symmetry. A distribution, or
data set, is symmetric if it looks the same to the left and right of the center point. The skewness of
the given data is near zero which means that it is a symmetric data and a normal distribution.
