Papers
Collection on monitoring
drinking water quality for the
Sustainable Development Goals
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include
ambitious global targets for drinking water, sanitation and hygiene. The
indicator for SDG target 6.1, ‘use of safely managed drinking water services,’
seeks to address the limitations of previous monitoring efforts, including
COLLECTION ORGANIZERS:
the accessibility, availability and quality of drinking water. Countries have
now begun to address gaps in data for the first time, by gathering nationally Robert Bain – Data, Research and

This collection of papers is in collaboration with the WHO/UNICEF Joint Public Health, Environmental and
Monitoring Programme for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene, and Social Determinants of Health, WHO
npj Clean Water. npj Clean Water is currently seeking papers that will broadly
explore exposure assessments, risk factors for contamination and health Tom Slaymaker – Data, Research
impacts, and new approaches for collecting data on water quality. The and Policy, UNICEF
collection will focus on large-scale assessments of faecal contamination and
global priority chemical contaminants such as arsenic and fluoride, though Eric M.V. Hoek – Editor-in-Chief,
studies of other contaminants, or those focused on vulnerable populations,
are also welcome. Submissions are equally encouraged from low-, middle- npj Clean Water
and high-income countries.

npj Clean Water is a new Nature Research journal and is part of the Nature Editor, npj Clean Water
Partner Journal series. The journal is open access, ensuring that all papers in
this collection will be freely available, enabling wide readership. The deadline
for submissions is 31 October 2019. Papers will be published on the journal
website upon acceptance, and then additionally promoted on the special
collection’s landing page. A reduced article processing charge of 2000 USD
applies for papers in this collection; however, we are able to offer waivers
to authors who cannot pay this fee. All papers will be sent for peer review.
