CHAPTER I:
The Problem and Its Background
Introduction

● Stress in School Works

● Transition from Junior to Senior High School
“An analysis of the differential outcome data reveals that
Senior High School students who had prominent Junior High
School maladjustments have a 5–13-fold greater rate of grade
failure, suspension, and undue absenteeism than do students
without such Junior High School difficulties, and that generally
students without major Junior High School maladjustment
patterns continue to perform well after their entry to
secondary school.

(Safer, 1986)
TO PROVE IF THERE REALLY IS
A DIFFICULTY IN ADJUSTING IN
THE K12 CURRICULUM IN
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Hypothesis

● There were significant changes in transitioning from Junior to Senior

High School in terms of the mental health and social life of students.
Statement of the Problem

✓ To examine the Grade 11 students of St. James Academy of Malabon on

the amount of work and stress they encounter during the time of their
Grade 11 years compared to their Grade 10 years
✓ To determine how much of coping the grade 11 students undergo in
moving into senior high school whether or not these students are
having a hard time adjusting
✓ To determine how can the requirements effectively contribute to the
development of a student
Significance of the Study

● Grade 10/ Future Senior High School Students

● Senior High School Teachers
● Parents
● Guidance Counselors
● Future Researchers
● Department of Education
● Masses
Scope and Delimitation

✓ Changes in transitioning from Junior to Senior High School

✓ Comparison and contrast of the difference of being a Junior and Senior
High School student
✓ Factors that affect why students change their study habits and mental
state in shifting from Junior to Senior High School
✓ Books and articles about stress and education
✓ Answers of the Survey of Grade 11 Students

Review of Related Literature
Stress
“The organism processes
numerous systems to
coordinate such adaptive
responses both at systematic
and cellular levels”

(Billings and Moos. 1982)

“Indeed, students have a
unique cluster of stressful
experiences. Student’s
academic performances can
be affected by many factors”
(Bernstein et al. 2008)
“There are different stressors that happen to
a human such as: difficult financial
challenges, domestic responsibilities,
responsibilities in acquiring the needed
requirements in school, and a heavy
academic load. They stated that there is no
one cause of being stress. It can affect lives
and it will also give an impact on a person’s
daily basis.”
(Phinney and Haas. 2003)
Positive Effects of
Stress to Students
“Positive stress or eustress
(also called good stress) is
when you perceive a stressful
situation as an opportunity that
will lead to a good outcome.”
(Ruddock. n.d.)
“Occasional stress can help keep you
focused and improve your recall,
which can be a plus when cramming
for that test or preparing for an
important presentation at work.”

Ways to Avoid or
Lessen Stress
Ways to Avoid or Lessen Stress

There are quite a few ways that you can avoid getting stressed out,
reducing the amount of stress you feel from certain situations, and to
increase your ability to cope to situations and eliminate stress altogether.
Despite being stressed, there are still some ways to avoid suffering from
these situations.
Ways to Avoid or Lessen Stress

● Getting enough sleep

● Eating accordingly
● Proper exercise

CHAPTER V:
Conclusions and
Recommendations
✓ Examine the Grade 11 students of St. James Academy of
Malabon on the amount of work and stress they encounter
during the time of their Grade 11 years compared to their Grade
10 years
Grade 10 schoolworks are easier than in Grade 11

● More subjects = more projects

● New Specialized Subjects
● Longer schedules
● Special Requirements
✓ Determine how much of coping the grade 11 students undergo
in moving into senior high school whether or not these students
are having a hard time adjusting

■ Cutting off time for hobbies

■ Adapting to longer class schedules
■ Gradual Adjustment
✓ Determine how can the requirements effectively
contribute to the development of a student
■ Burden at first
● Thesis making
● Writing Activities
■ New skills are being learned and enhanced
Hypothesis

✓ There were significant changes in transitioning from Junior to Senior

High School in terms of the mental health and social life of students.
Recommendations

● Grade 10/ Future Senior High School Students

➢ Be ready with the changes in SHS
● Senior High School Teachers
➢ Participate in Seminars
➢ Consider the adjustments of the students
● Parents
➢ Know and be aware of their children’s schedules
Recommendations

● Guidance Counselors
➢ Continue to guide students
➢ Focus on the mental of the students especially in senior high
school
● Future Researchers
➢ Further study both the positive and negative effects of K12 SHS
➢ Replicate the same study to a different population
Recommendations

● Department of Education
➢ Review the K12 Curriculum on how it affects students
