A Filipino’s

Guide to Disaster
Preparedness
By Group 2:
Don Juan
Introduction
This is a study concerning safety precautions during
natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes,
tsunamis and so on. This thesis-like study serves as
a guide for us Filipinos, who suffer from typhoons
and earthquakes. This is because we live in a
tropical country and our lands are slowly withering
away and giving way for earthquakes. The guide
consists of tips for before, during and after disasters
and for basic survival. We hope that this study can
reach a national scale so we can help every Filipino
poor or not in any way possible.
Objectives
1. Inform as much people as possible about disaster
preparedness and causes of typhoon and other
phenomena.
2. To help prevent people from causing manmade
disaster.
3. To reduce the terrible effects of disasters to the
community.
4. To provide more emergency plans for when
disasters come.
5. To help people rise from the negative effects at
disasters.
6. To give tips about incoming disasters and what
to do if one is coming.
7. To provide do’s and don'ts during disasters, for
first aid and basic survival.

Scope and Limitations
Our research, although limited to a few people,
is widely informal. We cannot post it on the
internet because it is expensive to make a
website or sometimes post it on one. But social
media helps us spread the word about our
study. We also have a thesis form of this study
that we are ready to give away as soft copies
and hard copies.
Here is the Main Content of Our Presentation
and study:
1. Tips for during, before and after disasters,
and survival.
2. Explanation on why disasters happen.
3. And explanations on how can we prevent
these disasters.
Abstract
Purpose of Our Study: Many people die during
disasters; this study focuses on reducing the
number to spread our work. Lastly, we mainly
focus on making this guide available to of
deaths each time. We also focus on informing
as much people as possible in order everyone
of any social status because everyone needs to
be safe and prepared.
Here are the procedures we conducted in order
to finish this study:
1. Research Using the Internet.
2. Brainstorming as a Group.
3. Common Experience
Conclusion of Abstract
Our study mainly focuses on information.
It is highly informal about disaster
preparedness as well as causes and ways to
prevent them. It focuses mainly on helping
people anyway possible when it comes to
disasters. We mainly thought most of the
content ourselves but we also referred to
various websites on google.
Conclusion
Tips (Before a Disaster):
1. Make an evacuation route for your home.
2. Prepare an emergency bag for when disaster
strikes. This must include:
Food, water, flashlight, emergency phone,
vanity kit, safety equipment such as helmet,
life vest and so on.
3. Introduce basic survival and first aid to your
family.
4. Do not panic.
Tips: (During Disaster)
Typhoon
1. Gather emergency supplies.
2. Go to a safer area.
Earthquake
1. Duck, cover, and hold.
2. Grab emergency supplies.
3. Prepare for aftershock.
4. Evacuate to a safer place.
Tsunami
1. Go to higher ground or evacuate to a safer
place.
2. Stay away from the coast and grab
emergency supplies.
Landslide
3. Grab emergency supplies.
4. Evacuate to a farther and safer place.
Hurricane
1. Grab emergency supplies.
2. Evacuate to a safer place.

Causes of Natural Disasters

1. Typhoon - start off as tropical
thunderstorms. The strong winds pulls in
moisture from the oceans. The moisture
then is converted into heat and that heat
causes more air to flow into the center. All
of the heat and airflow into the eye causes
a typhoon.
2. Earthquake - these are usually caused
when rocks underground break along a
fault. The sudden release of energy causes
seismic waves that causes the ground to
shake. Another reason is when two plates
move against each other and break rocks.
The pressure builds up and earthquake
occurs. Afterwards the plates starts moving
until they get stuck again.
3. Tsunami - Tsunamis normally happen
when earthquakes, underwater landslides,
and volcanic eruptions cause the land
under the water to move up and down.
Then the water moves randomly, causing
waves and as these waves go nearer shallow
water they increase in height.
4. Landslide - Landslide usually happen
when gravity pulls down the materials
holding the rocks above. Sometimes the
material that act like pillars wither away due
to natural phenomena or human activity.
5. Hurricane – This normally happens when
water vapor goes in the eye of the storm
causing more heat to flow. All the heat and
air causes it to expand and grow stronger.
Volcanic eruption – this happens because
of 3 theories.
*Difference of magma density.
*Build-up of pressure of gases
*Increase of pressure when new magma
enters.
Most disasters cannot be prevented and even
some we cause. Here are some ways you as a
citizen help prevent these disasters from
happening.
1. Plant more trees to prevent landslides and
flooding.
2. Reduce trash in mountains to avoid
landslides.
3. Do not dig under hills or mountains to
avoid soil erosion.

Dos and Don’ts

*Typhoons cause flood. During floods do
not go near waters with electricity and do
not walk in floodwater as well. Do be
mindful also as wild fish, snakes and rats
can lurk and opened man holes may be
present.
*Do make sure your home is sturdy against
these disasters.
*Do make sure you have first aid kits,
emergency supplies, fire extinguishers and
emergency phones.
*Do make sure you family knows what to
do as well as yourself.
