BIOTECHNOLOGICAL GLOSSARY

Culture media/ A growth medium or culture medium is a solid, liquid or semi-solid

Growth medium designed to support the growth of microorganisms.

Sterilize To destroy microorganisms in or on, usually by bringing to a high

temperature with steam, dry heat, or boiling liquid.

Yeasts Are eukaryotic single-celled microorganisms classified as members of

the fungus kingdom.

Parasites Is an organism that lives on or in a host organism and gets its food
from or at the expense of its host.

DNA Is a molecule composed of two chains that coil around each other to
form a double helix carrying genetic instructions for the development,
functioning, growth and reproduction of all known organisms and many
viruses.

Glycolysis Is the metabolic process that serves as the foundation for both aerobic
and anaerobic cellular respiration. In glycolysis, glucose is converted
into pyruvate.I

Staining Is a technique used to enhance contrast in samples, generally at the

microscopic level.
Binnacle It is important to take notes and log activities.

Lab coat The coat protects their street clothes and also serves as a simple uniform.

Disposable Is essential for personal safety and that of others in work environments
gloves such as hospitals, labs and schools.

Sample A representative part or a single item from a larger whole or group

especially when presented for inspection or shown as evidence of
quality.

Incubator An insulated enclosure in which temperature, humidity, and other

environmental conditions can be regulated at levels optimal for growth,
hatching, or reproduction.

Microscope An optical instrument that uses a lens or a combination of lenses to

produce magnified images of small objects, especially of objects too
small to be seen by the unaided eye. An instrument, such as an
electron microscope, that uses electronic or other processes to magnify
objects.

Molecule A group of two or more atoms that form the smallest identifiable unit
into which a pure substance can be divided and still retain the
composition and chemical properties of that substance.

Enzyme A substance that acts as a catalyst in living organisms, regulating the

rate at which chemical reactions proceed without itself being altered in
