ANALYSE OF SHORT STORY

1. The title of the short story is Black Cat

2. Plot : This story is an horror and thriller story with first point of view, using (I)
When I was child, I was a good children , I always loved to playing with pets, I was
married with my wife in a young age. I and my wife love to taking care of animals such as
dogs, rabbit, turtle and also big, wise, and majestic cat. I named him Pluto, he is a good cat,
he always follow me whenever I go, we always spent time together. Until I fall into dark hole,
I started to drunk and doing some violences to my wife and my pets. I was mad and angry
with anyone, including pluto, I always kicked him, punished him and makes him afraid when
he see me. One day I am very frustrated by him, I was killed him, I prick and pry his eyes
until bleeding and hanged him on tree beside my home. One day when the night come, I was
woke up because my house was burned, I lost everythings, but only one room which is left
and on that walls there’s pluto shaped, those cat now were gone form the tree. Years past and
I missed pluto, one day when I going to the bar I met a cat look like pluto, I take him to
home, and I and my wife loved him. But one day those cat chest fur falling down and it’s
shaped guillotine. Days by days I hated him and I also hated my wife. One day I bring them
to my underground wine stocks, and those cat keep around me, I am mad and I killed those
cat, but my wife forbid me, and I killed my wife until her neck almost cutted off. I buried her
into my underground walls and I didn’t see those cat. Almost one week I am very happy no
one disturbing me, until my neighbours and police doing some conference, and I keep calm
until the police checked my house, suddenly I heard someone screaming very loud like
sounds from the hall and it’s very disturbing. Then the police broke the walls and sees my
wife’s corpse and those cat standing in front of my wife corpse with red bloody eyes.
3. Character and characterization
I (as the main character) : Antagonist (I think “I” in here has a complex characterization,
because he’s changing through the time from protagonists into
antagonists also “I” in here is a sadistic character “I killed my
wife until her neck almost cut off.”
My wife : Protagonist (because since the first story “wife) is a static
character) “I killed those cat and my wife forbid me.”
4. Conflict :
In this story using dramatic conflict because “ I have a problem with himself and the another
character “Black cat” and his wife, also he struggling with his drunk addict. I think “I” in this
story have a mental illness.

and mark twain wrote prince and the pauper (Romantism era) this era also called
Victorian era
6. Point of view
In this story Edgar Allan Poe using first point of view using “I”
“I heard someone screaming very loud like sounds from the hell and it’s very
disturbing.”
7. Theme
This story theme is horror and also thriller, we can see it through the story
“The police sees my wife corpse when the walls broke”
8. Style
Edgar Allan Poe always using horror, mystery,terror and suspens story style, he
always explained phsycal character into story and amazingly the reader cannot expect
it.
9. Situation and tone
This story situation is intense and full of suspense, and also terrorizing, and the tone is
very dark and serious.
10. Survival
I think this character “I” have been survived through his life, he become antagonists
because he’s survive from his though situations, but he couldn’t.
11. The author and it’s novel
Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809-October 7, 1849) was an American writer, editor
and literary critic, he is famous for his mystery and macabre tales. Inside his tales there’s a
confidence and wide knowledge that we never knew before. Ironicly poe died at 40 years old
in a poor condition with no friends or families. Poe’s power in writing was in ironic and his
dark humour, his famous short story is like Black Cat, The Fall of Usher, and Tell-Tale Heart.
When you read his tales, the reader just like going into hauted house, revengers, an anxiety
murderers, and in the end the reader will excite and amazed with this gothic horror master.
