You go on a lovely vacation with your family when disaster strikes. You are left alone on
an empty island, far from any other humans and lost to your family. No one knows you are
there. You are you, with your life and experiences.
Your tasks:
Analyze your situation. Describe some of the challenges you might face. Refer to the
novel to help you, but do not copy. After all, you are you and have your knowledge, not that of
Karana. Be realistic.
Student Work:
My situation of living alone on an empty island would be I have to find things that are
important to my daily life. For example of this would be food, home and drinking water. I think
the best place to find drinking water is river. I think river is the best place to find drinking water
because I think wild animals they would also come to drink water from the river and river is easy
to find. But this also means that I have to be more careful of the wild animals because they
could come and attack me anytime. I think the best place for building home is at the middle of
the island, but also have to be far from the river. I think like this because living at the beach it is
very dangerous once it has a big wave or Tsunami come then my home and myself would have
died. And not living close to the river because it is very easy for those wild animals that want to
come and drink water to attack me or coming into my house. I think finding food is the hardest
thing to do because I don’t have any material to hunt animals and I also do not have any
knowledge about food in the forest. So to find food I will find food in the forest that I know or I
have seen before to eat. Also I will try to make a spear by using a very strong stick and using a
very sharp stone, then I will use long leave and try to stick everything together.
Some of the challenges that I would find in the island is I have to live alone on the island.
When I have to live alone that means there is no one helping me out and I don’t have anyone to
talk with. I have to fight or run away from the predator. For the predator on the island I could find
them anywhere and it is dangerous for me to fight with those animals without any tools. Another
challenge is I think making a spear is kind of impossible, I think this because there is nothing in
the island that I think it will help me make a spear to fight the animals. Another big problem is I
don’t know where I can find food and I don’t have any knowledge about food in the forest. And I
also don’t have any tools to help me kill the animals.
Slowly, you learn to live on this island. You live there, alone, for twenty years. Then, a
risky chance for rescue shows up, just like in Island of the Blue Dolphins. Do you take the risk?
Do you avoid the risk?
Your tasks:
Choose if you stay or try to leave. Justify your choice. Compare/contrast your choice
with Karana’s choice.
Student Work:
If the rescue show up to help and ask me to go back with them, I my decision is I would
rather continue living on the island. I think like this because once I go with them and they bring
me back to the city, then probably at that time that I go back, I won’t know what is going on right
now or what do I have to do. I don’t know where I can find a job because I don’t have any
knowledge about it or maybe at that time most of the people they don’t need humans to work for
them and they can just use robots. And I worry about using money in one day. But if I still live on
the island I don’t have to worry about any of these. But my choice are different with Karana’s
choice because she rather go back with the White Men because she misses her family and she
wants to live with her family and that is why she chose to go back with the White men.
