BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

1. PRE-K/CCSD K-2ND GRADE CORE STANDARDS:


- 1.PK.1a Make independent choices from diverse interest centers or activities.
- 6.PK.1c Use verbal and non-verbal conversation skills (e.g., listening, letting a person
finish speaking before taking a turn, staying with one topic, maintaining eye contact,
etc.).
- 3.PK.3 Create stories and scenarios by combining experiences and ideas.
- 4.PK.1 Begin to understand and identify similarities and differences between dramatic
characters and real people.

2. OBJECTIVES:
- Students will be able to express their individuality and their passions.
- Students will be able to identify their likes and dislikes.
- Students will be able to imagine their future self and create scenarios.
- Students will be able to relate to Tommy and find their current passion.

3. MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT:
- “The Art Lesson” book
- White sheets of paper
- Coloring utensils (crayons, coloring pencils)

4. TEACHING:
- Read aloud “The Art Lesson”
- After reading the book, ask the children what they would like to be when they grow up. If
some children struggle to respond, ask them what they enjoy doing. Have the students
be able to identify their favorite activities and their least favorite. Some children won’t be
aware that there are things that can be connected to what they like. If some children like
food, they can be a cook, etc.
- Have students, just like Tommy, draw a picture of themselves grown up doing what they
love to do. Students will have crayons, pencils, colored pencils.
- After completing have students write their name next to their drawing.
- Students will then sit back down on the class rug,share their picture and what they love
to do to the classroom.

5. CLOSURE:
- Students were able to relate with Tommy by identifying their favorite things to do.
- Students were able to use their imagination and picture themselves doing their favorite
activity in the future as a grown up.
- Students were able to use art utensils to express what they see and feel.
- Students were able to express their passion and interests to the classroom.
