CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM
Introduction
The world of Information Technology transformed and made the life of human beings
easier through the innovation of different machines and software applications. Search engines are
all over the web for faster and reliable sources. But despite these easier ways of acquiring
information, libraries are still operational in schools, colleges, and universities. Students are still
obliged to use books from their library as one of their references in researches and other school
works. Managing these libraries requires a lot of transactions and tasks. Some of these
transactions include record keeping of the books and student and employee borrowers. However,
many school libraries are still operated manually by librarians and library assistants.
Library is regarded as the brain of any institutes, of course many institute understand the
importance of the library to the growth of the institute and their esteem users which we
categorically call the students. An integrated library system, also known as a library management
system(Adamson et al., 2008)is an enterprise resource planning system for a library, used to
track items owned, orders made, bills paid, and users who have borrowed. The Library
Management System is a Library Management software for monitoring and controlling the
transactions in a library (Ashutosh and Ashish., 2012).
Our proposed system, the Library Management System, is a system wherein library
transactions will no longer need manual operation. This will carry out different processes in
managing school libraries like library catalog for easier book searching, keeping records of
books, student borrowers, books borrowed, return of books, overdue and balances of books
borrowed and automatic fine fees calculation. In additional to this, it will be paperless and it is
easily to use without using internet.
Statement of the Problem
It will eliminate some of the problems associated with the old (manual) system of library
management, which include cost of equipment and staff maintenance and also allow institutions
to manage the affairs of libraries easily
Librarian- The system will help them to generate all the reports in a minimum amount of time
and minimizes the used of papers such as library cards and other forms that the librarian used at
School – This research will offer increased productivity and job satisfaction among staff
members as it eliminates duplication of effort. It will provide more economical and safer means
Future Researcher – This research will can use this as a reference if their research is about
Scope
The system that the programmers will create is about the development of the Library of Batangas
Eastern Colleges.
The Proposed system will be computerized, including its way of storing, organizing and
generating files. The function of the system is to record all the books that was borrowed and
returned. The output is the name of the students, information about the borrowed book and if it is
already returned.
Limitation
The study limits the system within Batangas Eastern Colleges Library. The study will not
concern on the payment of the overdue of books. The system cannot connect or use into the
internet . The system is a Simple Library Management at Batangas Eastern Colleges Library.

CHAPTER 2
This chapter presents a review of related literature. This also presents the different
variables relative to the study.
Related Literature
This type of research is not new. Literature review of a research topic is an exercise in which the
researcher tries to identify, locate, read and evaluate the previous studies, observations, opinions,
comments related to what he or she intends to research on
A computerized library system for a school keeps track of all books and periodicals in the library
and their check-out status. The library system also interfaces with an external relational database
which stores information about the library users (students, faculty, and staff), including whether
they have any library items checked out. Library users can access the catalogue and recall books
and periodicals. Library employees have the same access as well as additional capabilities (e.g.,
listing the status of an item). Such a review is intended to provide the researcher with a good
knowledge of up to date information on what he/she is working on. In this study, we go ahead to
review the comments from some researchers and writers alike.
Akinyotu (1977), states that library automation has reached various levels of development in
many developed and developing countries in the world.
Reynolds (1985), stated that libraries have been in the information business several years before
any known modern institution, they ought to have been the ”earliest beneficiaries” of the
application of computer technology to their operation and services
Velma Veneziano stated that “computer -based library circulation system has resulted in
dramatic changes in practice and procedures in the circulation section”.
Kingery and Tauber (1963) stated that nearly all collections are concerned with computer-
produced book cataloguing. Marlene Clay and Chris Batt (1992) stated that today it is
increasingly difficult to find libraries which do not use computers in some shape or form. Better
questions are “what benefits should one expect to gain and where should it stop”.
Lorraine M. (1973) says that to cope with the new computer-based systems, today’s librarian
must learn the language and technique of Automated catalogue. Robert Wedgeworth (1973)
noted that computer based acquisition procedures which have been developed at the library
provide more effective control over fund accounting and maintenance of an outstanding order
file. The system illustrates an economical, yet flexible approach to automated acquisitions
procedures in an academic library.
Richard De Genaro (1992) however noted that in the development of an automated program in a
research library, three approaches will be considered. The library may decide simply to wait for
developments; it may attempt to develop an integrated system from start and will also deal with
important elements in any program regardless of the approach. These include building a
capability to do automation work, staffing, equipment, organizational structure and costs.
Lawrence Auld‟s (1995) made mention that automated systems of a book order and circulation
control using an IBM 1620 computer was developed at Oakland University and it recorded
relative degree of success and failure.Kilgour R. A. (1986) made mention of BELLREL online
circulation control system.
Lancaster(1974), defined library automation as “the most effective model covering library
processing and query operations seems to be one where every operations has immediate access to
up-to-date information”.
In the light of the above, updating has become automatic part of the most processes, and an
update in one operation is as update for everyone, and to a very large extent, the need for
replicating date on multiple pieces of paper is eliminated. Hence, automation helps the library
system to operate efficiently.

Chapter 3
Methodology
The chapter shows the methods used in conducting this study. The researchers discussed
the research design that was chosen and the reason behind as to why the research design was
chosen. The chapter also discusses the location of the study as well as the research participants.
The instrument of the research is described and the data procedures that were followed in
Research Design
This study will use a descriptive research design, since the researchers will use a survey
as the instrument in conducting this study. A descriptive research design fits well in this
research, due to the fact that it provides the researchers with quantifiable data .
Research Locale
This research is conducted at the BSTC building of Batangas Eastern Colleges located at
Mabini St., Brgy. Lipahan, San Juan, Batangas. The researchers will specifically conduct their
research in the senior high school classrooms as well in the staff of the Library.
Batangas Eastern Colleges Skills and Training Center (BSTC) is a separate building from
the main campus of Batangas Eastern Colleges. It houses laboratories, facilities, faculty members
of the senior high school department as well as the senior high school classrooms and the
students.
The 50 respondents in the study will be randomly selected from the different strands such
as, STEM, HUMMS, ABM, HE, and ICT. The researchers will select 10 students from the strand
STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, 10 students from the strand
HUMMS – Humanities and Social Sciences, 10 students from ABM – Accounting, Business, and
Management, 10 students from the strand HE – Home Economics, and 10 students from the
strand ICT – Information Communication and Technology. Having a mix of grade 11 and grade
12, the researchers capitalized this, as well as 5 staff of the Library such as the Librarian.
Research Instrument
In gathering the data, the researchers used a questionnaire. The researchers based it on the
variables of the study; this can be seen in Chapter 1. In validating the instrument, 3 faculty
members of Batangas Eastern Colleges are used. The researchers will give the results to them.
They will analyze the questionnaire and ensure if it is qualified for the topic of the study. In
addition, a letter of approval is submitted to the principal before conducting the questionnaire at
Batangas Eastern Colleges. The researchers will then distribute the survey to the respondents, the
respondents then answered the survey. The time limit in answering the questionnaire is 15 to 20
minutes.
After the data has been collected, the researchers then carefully analyzed the results by
checking the frequency of the results of the respondents and then computing the frequency into
percentage. The respondents’ answers will then be divided to their corresponding variables of the
