and just boring. This might have been because I mostly wrote or composed scientific reports,
which are mostly just copying what you did in a laboratory and analyzing some parts of it.
However, that part of me has changed, writing is still not my favorite thing to do, but now I
know that I can actually have a good time doing it. This semester I wrote a total of four pieces,
which varied in form. Even though all the pieces of writing I composed this semester are
different, I was able to find my style of writing, and apply that to all my work.
The first piece I wrote this semester was my personal narrative, we had to incorporate all the
literary devices and concepts we learned in class, such as our rhetorical situation, into our piece
of work. Shodona, my teacher told the class that we could write about anything we want, as long
as the piece is engaging and entertaining. I decided to write about my experience playing the
piano, and how I got into playing it in the first place. I used devices such as anecdotes and
description to make sure the person who reads my narrative would be interested in the story. I
received good feedback on that piece, I was told that the use of descriptive language create a
good ambience. In my opinion, the personal narrative was my best piece, and I’m very proud of
it. When I finished this piece, I realized that I actually enjoyed writing it, I had fun finding
synonyms in the dictionary for words that I repeated too much. I realized that writing wasn’t so
The second piece of work I wrote was a case study report. Shodona gave us a list of suggested
topics that would be appropriate to tackle the case study report genre. I decided to write about the
impact of Fortnite on teenagers. I decided on this topic as I have seen people who have benefited
from this game, economically or socially. However, there are also cases of people getting
addicted to this game, so I searched for testimonies and stats that supported the fact that
teenagers are getting addicted to this game. If I have to be completely honest, this was my least
favorite piece to write, it felt like I was doing a scientific report again. The next two pieces were
a movie review and an argument. They were alright, the movie was a little bit strange, but what
mattered was how well I was able to analyze aspects of the movie, I did really well, I got and
almost perfect score. For the argument I wrote about why everyone should play an instrument,
and the benefits it brings to your life, some supported by science, and also using descriptive
I think this portfolio will show my progress in terms of writing. Even though I will not include
my previous drafts in this document, there is progress when comparing my first piece to my last
one. Not just in terms of writing in general, but also the choice of words and structuring of ideas
and sentences. I plan on writing more in the future, I have enjoyed the ride so far, I learned that I
can add my own twist to a piece of writing, and not always do the exact same thing. This
portfolio has helped me understand that I didn’t like writing before because I wasn’t seeing it as
a possibility to express myself. I have identified my strengths when it comes to writing, which is
descriptive, I am able to use language in such a way that I can provoke imagery. In terms of
weaknesses, I tend to repeat words a lot, and that takes away from the piece. However, I will
continue writing and make sure to overcome my weaknesses and put my strengths to use.
