Notice of vacancy for an A 2 post: Director of the Directorate for Competitive and Sustainable
Growth: Transport Research (Article 29(2))

The Commission is seeking to fill the post of Director in charge of the Directorate for Competitive and
Sustainable Growth: Transport Research, within the Directorate-General for Research.

The Directorate is helping to establish the European Research Area by drawing up and implementing
projects in the field of transport technology, in particular air transport. To this end it carries out and
coordinates work in progress and prepares future Community action. The Director will also have
responsibility for coordinating Community research activities in the field of space and for designing and
implementing a European strategy for space in cooperation with the European Space Agency and the
Joint Research Centre.

Candidates must have:

— a solid scientific background,

— experience in the field of transport technology, in particular in the area of aerospace technology,

— a proven aptitude to manage a large civil-service department (about 100 staff) responsible for
managing a large number of contracts,

— the ability to represent the Commission in political, industrial and scientific bodies at European and
international level.

The post is at Director level (A 2).

The Commission invites applications from both internal and outside candidates.

Applicants must be nationals of one of the Member States of the European Union and hold a university
degree or equivalent national qualification giving access to postgraduate studies (any equivalent
professional experience will be taken into account).

Applicants must have at least 15 years’ professional experience in the field of scientific research, of which
at least five years must have been spent in a management capacity.

Applicants must have a good knowledge of English or French and one other Community language;
knowledge of French and English as well as other Community languages would be an additional

The successful candidate will be chosen in accordance with the Commission’s selection procedure.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview organised by the Commission’s Advisory
Committee on Appointments, which will be assisted by three international experts in the field of research.

Pay and conditions of employment will be those laid down for A 2 officials of the European Communities.
