Mental Health

Question: Psychological Factors causing mental illness.
Note: The exact cause of mental illness is not known ( idiopathic) however through research, 
many of the mental conditions are caused by a combination of biological, psychological and 
environmental factors.

Psychological factors include:
• Severe psychological trauma as a child. It could be emotional as a result of physical 
or sexual abuse.
• Post traumatic stress disorder developed as a result of a tragic event that has 
happened in your life. It could be war..
• An important early loss in one´s life say that of parents.
• Neglect from family, friends, or even society.
• Poor ability to relate with others.
• Bullying
• Anxiety
• Domestic violence predisposes one (the battered) to developing a low self esteem.
• Rejection from family, friends, and society.
• Significant self destructive thoughts, patterns and perceptions about oneself.
• Sexual abuse.
