Remove Torque Converter, Transmission And Transfer Gears

Section I
START BY:
a. remove roll-over protective structure (ROPS)*
b. remove steering wheel*

These operations are in the 980C Wheel Loader Operator's Station Disassembly And Assembly
section.
NOTE: The cab and platform must be removed as a unit to save time.
1. Remove bolts (3). Remove cushion assembly (1).
2. Remove four bolts (2) that hold the hydraulic control panel to the platform.

NOTE: Remove four bolts and remove the angle bracket that fastens the hydraulic control panel to
the cab floor plate on the front side.
3. Remove the bolts and nuts that hold bracket assembly (4) to the platform.
4. Remove the floormat from the cab.
5. Remove 10 bolts (5) that hold the floor plate to the platform.
6. Open the door assembly behind the cab. Disconnect six wiring harnesses (6) from the back of the
platform.
7. Turn valves (7) and (9) to the "OFF" position. Disconnect hoses (8) and (10), and drain the coolant
from the heater system.
Always wear goggles when the air conditioning system is opened. This
system is charged with Freon-12 (CCL2F2 Dichlorodifluoromethane)
which is not toxic or flammable. But there is a reason for caution. When
Freon-12 makes contact with a flame, lethal phosgene gas is made.
INHALING FREON THROUGH A LIGHTED CIGARETTE CAN
CAUSE VIOLENT ILLNESS. This system is under pressure at all
times, engine running or not. HEAT MUST NEVER BE PUT ON A
CHARGED SYSTEM. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service
Manual Form No. SENR7454 for more information on procedures and
safety requirements on removal and installation of lines and refrigerant
from the system.
8. Disconnect air conditioner hoses (11) from the platform.
9. Disconnect heater hoses (12).
10. Remove four bolts, washers and spacers (13) from each mounting bracket on the rear of the
platform.
11. Remove the left and right sheet assemblies (14) from under the front of the cab.
12. Remove four bolts (15) from each mounting bracket on the front of the platform.
13. Install four 1/2" - 13 NC forged eyebolts (16) in the top of the cab. Fasten a hoist to the cab and
platform. Remove the cab and platform (17) from the machine. The weight of the cab and platform is
585 kg (1290 lb.).
Remove Torque Converter Transmission And Transfer Gears

Section II
START BY:
a. remove hoods (door assembly only)*
b. remove air cleaner group*
c. remove parking brake
d. remove implement pump**
e. remove steering and implement pilot pump**
f. remove center drive shaft
g. remove rear drive shaft

1. Drain the oil from the torque converter, transmission and transfer gears.
2. Remove bolts (1). Remove plate (2).
3. Remove the bolts, and remove strip (4) from the plates.
4. Remove the bolts that hold the left plate. Remove left plate (3).
5. Remove the bolts that hold the right plate. Remove right plate (5).
6. Disconnect four fuel lines (7) from the unions. Put caps and plugs on all connections so dirt or
foreign material can not get into the fuel system.
7. Remove the bolts that hold bracket (6) to the torque converter housing.
8. Remove bolts (8) that hold bracket (9) to the transmission.
9. Disconnect fuel lines (10) and (12). Put caps and plugs on all connections so dirt or foreign material
can not get into the fuel system.
10. Disconnect three wires (11) from the fuel filter group. Put identification marks on the wires for
installation purposes.
11. Disconnect wires (15) from the start aid.
12. Remove two nuts (13) that hold the wiring harness to the firewall. Pull wiring harness (14) clear
of the firewall.
13. Disconnect rod assembly (16) from the lever.
14. Remove the bolts that hold the plate to the rails. Remove plate assembly (17).
15. Remove two bolts (18) from each side of the firewall.
16. Remove bolts (19) that hold the panel assembly to the sheet assembly. Remove left panel
assembly (20).
17. Remove bolts (21) and plate (22) from each side of the firewall.
18. Remove five bolts (23) that hold the firewall to the frame from each side.
19. Fasten a hoist to the firewall as shown. Remove firewall (24), the filter group and fuel lines as a
unit. The weight of the firewall, filter group and fuel lines is 50 kg (110 lb.).
NOTE: If necessary, fasten a hoist to the rail assemblies. Lift rail assemblies approximately 25.4 mm
(1 in.) so the firewall can be removed.
20. Disconnect wires (25) from the switches. Put identification marks on the wires for assembly
purposes. Remove the bolt that holds the wiring harness to the filter group. Pull the wiring harness
clear of the filter group.
21. Disconnect hose assemblies (26) and (28) from the block.
22. Disconnect hose assembly (27) from the manifold on the transmission.
23. Fasten a hoist to the filter group as shown. Remove bolts (30) that hold the support to the
transmission. Remove hydraulic valve and filter support group (29). The weight of the hydraulic valve
and filter support group is 62 kg (137 lb.).
24. Remove bolts (34). Pull wiring harness (33) clear of the transmission.
25. Remove bolt (31) and the nut. Disconnect the clamp on the oil filler tube from the clip on the oil
level tube.
26. Remove the two nuts, and remove oil filler tube (32) from the transmission. Remove the O-ring
seal from the oil filler tube.
27. Disconnect hose assembly (35) from the transmission.
28. Remove tube assembly (36) from the manifold on the transmission and the transmission oil
cooler. Remove the O-ring seals from the tube assembly.

29. Disconnect wire (38) from the switch.
30. Disconnect hose assembly (40) from the torque converter outlet relief valve.
31. Remove assembly (37) from the outlet relief valve and transmission oil cooler.
32. Remove the bolts, and remove torque converter outlet relief valve (39) from the side of the torque
converter.
33. Disconnect hose assembly (41) from the transfer gear case.
34. Remove oil level gauge tube assembly (42) from the transfer gear case.
35. Remove bolts (43) that hold the oil screen housing to the transfer gear case. Pull oil screen
housing (44) clear of the transfer gear case.
36. Install five 5/8"-11 NC forged eyebolts (45) in the transmission and torque converter as shown.
Fasten a hoist and tool (A) to the transmission and torque converter.
37. Remove bolts (47), and remove the top half of support assembly (46) from each side of the
transfer gear case. Put identification marks on each half of the support assemblies so they will not be
mixed at assembly.
38. Lift the torque converter, transmission and transfer gears until a wood block (48) approximately
76.2 mm (3.00 in.) thick can be installed between the flywheel housing and rear axle housing as
shown. Put the weight of the torque converter, transmission and transfer gears on the wood block.
39. Put a floor jack (50) with a capacity of 4500 kg (5 ton) under the transfer gear case as shown.
Remove the lower half of support assembly (49) from each side of the transfer gear case. Remove the
dowel from the support if it does not come out when the lower half of the support is removed.
40. Remove bolts and dowels (52) that hold the beam assembly to the transfer gear case. Use two
persons to remove beam assembly (51) from each side of the transfer gear case. The weight of the
beam assembly is 42 kg (93 lb.).
41. Fasten a hoist to the torque converter, transmission and transfer gears. Remove bolts (53) that hold
the torque converter to the flywheel housing. Remove torque converter (54), transmission and transfer
gears. The weight of the torque converter, transmission and transfer gears is 1418 kg (3126 lb.).
Install Torque Converter, Transmission And Transfer Gears

Section I
1. Install five 5/8"-11 NC forged eyebolts (1) in the transmission and torque converter as shown.
2. Fasten a hoist and tool (A) to the torque converter, transmission and transfer gears as shown. Put
torque converter, transmission (2) and transfer gears in position in the flywheel housing, and install
the bolts that hold the torque converter to the flywheel housing.
3. Put a floor jack (3) with a capacity of 4500 kg (5 ton) under the transfer gear case as shown. Use
two persons to install beam assembly (4) on each side of the transfer gear case. Be sure the two
dowels are in position.
4. Put lower half (5) of the support assembly and dowel in position on each side of the transfer gear
case.
5. Remove the floor jack. Use the hoist and tool (A) to lift the torque converter, transmission and
transfer gears. Remove the wood block from between the flywheel housing and the rear axle housing.
Lower the torque converter, transmission and transfer gears into position on the support assemblies.
NOTICE
Do not mix the blocks and caps of the support assembly. Make sure the
blocks and caps are assembled in their original positions. Make sure
the blocks and caps are assembled with the letter "A" (which is on the
side of the blocks and caps) on the same side.
6. Install the upper half of support assembly (6) on each side of the transfer gear case. Install the bolts
that hold them. Remove the hoist and tool (A).
7. Connect oil screen housing (7) to the transfer gear case.
8. Install oil level gauge tube assembly (8) on the transfer gear case.
9. Connect hose assembly (9) to the back of the transfer gear case.
10. Install torque converter outlet relief valve (12) on the torque converter.
11. Install tube assembly (10) on the transmission oil cooler and outlet relief valve.
12. Connect wire (11) to the switch.
13. Connect the hose assembly to the outlet relief valve.
14. Install the O-ring seals on the tube assembly. Install tube assembly (13) on the transmission
manifold and transmission oil cooler.
15. Connect hose assembly (14) to the transmission.
16. Install the O-ring seal in the transmission oil filler tube. Install oil filler tube (15). Install the bolt
and nut that hold the clamp on the oil filler tube to the clip on the oil level tube.
17. Fasten a hoist to the filter group. Put filter group (16) in position on the transmission, and install
the bolts that hold it.
18. Connect hose assembly (18) to the manifold on the transmission.
19. Connect hose assemblies (17) and (19) to the block.
20. Fasten a hoist to the firewall as shown. Install firewall (20), the filter group and fuel lines as a
unit. Install the bolts that hold the firewall to the frame.
21. Install plate (21) on each side of the firewall.
22. Install left panel assembly (22). Install the bolts that hold it.
23. Install plate assembly (24) on the rails.
24. Connect rod assembly (23) to the lever.
25. Put wiring harness (25) in position on the firewall. Install the washers and nuts that hold it.
26. Connect wires (26) to the start aid.
27. Connect wires (27) to the fuel filter group.
28. Connect fuel lines (28) and (29).
29. Put clip for wiring harness (31) and bracket (30) in position on the transmission. Install the bolts
that hold them.
30. Connect four fuel lines (32) to the unions.
31. Install bracket (33) on the torque converter housing.
32. Install left plate (34), right plate (36) and strip (35).
33. Put plate (37) in position, and install the two bolts that hold it to right plate (36).
34. Fill the transmission with oil to the correct level. See the Maintenance Guide.
END BY:
a. install rear drive shaft
b. install center drive shaft
c. install steering and implement pilot pump *
d. install implement pump *
e. install parking brake
f. install air cleaner group **
g. install hoods (door assembly only) **

Section II
1. Install four 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts (1) in the top of the cab. Fasten a hoist to the cab and
platform. Put cab and platform (2) in position on the machine. Install the bolts in the front mounting
brackets. Install the bolts, washers and spacers in the rear mounting brackets.
2. Install the sheet assemblies under the front of the platform.
3. Connect six wiring harnesses (3) to the rear of the platform.
4. Connect heater hoses (5) to the rear of the platform.

Torque Converter, Transmission And Transfer Gears

Remove Torque Converter, Transmission And Transfer Gears

a. remove roll-over protective structure (ROPS)*

b. remove steering wheel*

1. Remove bolts (3). Remove cushion assembly (1).

4. Remove the floormat from the cab.

8. Disconnect air conditioner hoses (11) from the platform.

9. Disconnect heater hoses (12).

29. Disconnect wire (38) from the switch.

Install Torque Converter, Transmission And Transfer Gears

7. Connect oil screen housing (7) to the transfer gear case.

12. Connect wire (11) to the switch.

13. Connect the hose assembly to the outlet relief valve.

15. Connect hose assembly (14) to the transmission.

18. Connect hose assembly (18) to the manifold on the transmission.

19. Connect hose assemblies (17) and (19) to the block.

21. Install plate (21) on each side of the firewall.

23. Install plate assembly (24) on the rails.

24. Connect rod assembly (23) to the lever.

26. Connect wires (26) to the start aid.

27. Connect wires (27) to the fuel filter group.

28. Connect fuel lines (28) and (29).

30. Connect four fuel lines (32) to the unions.

31. Install bracket (33) on the torque converter housing.
