Our mission is to come up with sustainable ways to decrease the pervasive problem of
Fatbergs and use cutting edge technologies to provide viable solutions for the future. We
believe that by fixing something as common as everyday plumbing and water systems, we will
be able to positively impact many other aspects of the modern world in which we live

About Chem Pet

Chem Pet is a new concept that uses up and coming chemistry to solve the problem of
Fatbergs. The specific chemical solution that have been looking into is the use of the enzyme
PETase, hence the name Chem Pet. We were initially interested in finding a solution to
Fatbergs, as these buildups alone cause millions of dollars in damage for various cities on an
annual basis. The product itself was created with practicality in mind, and with the full intent
that this could be used in numerous settings. Sanitary districts, including Novato and Petaluma,
were contacted during the creation of this product, and their input was taken into
consideration when figuring out how to best link up Chem Pet to pre-existing water treatment
systems.

Why it Works
Currently, wet wipes are flushed down the toilet every year, causing clogs in plumbing that
are extremely expensive to repair, and can lead to detrimental impacts on the environment.
This is because these wipes contain polyester in order to make them stronger and less prone to
tearing during use. Polyester is made with PET plastic, which is extremely resistant to
biodegradation and takes over 100 years to break down. Thus, it is often difficult to find a way
to dispose of it and make sure it goes through plumbing systems safety. The enzyme PETase,
discovered in Japan, is able to break down PET in six days. When coupled with a bioreactor that
allows for the perfect venue for this process to take place, clogs can be stopped in their tracks.
