2019-2020 Research I
Course Overview
Ms. C. Davis, Instructor
Following the curriculum set down by Florida’s Sunshine State Standards, this course will focus
on reading strategies for better comprehension, to develop and strengthen skills in reading. In
addition, instruction in writing techniques will be a continued integral part of the class. Students
will build their composition skills to increase their ability to write clearly, correctly, and logically
for a variety of purposes and audiences. Grammar and vocabulary will be included, while learning
tasks and materials will accommodate the individual needs of students. Literary analysis will be
emphasized in class discussions and writing assignments, through various integrated experiences
in the language arts strands. Because testing or assessment episodes are part of the reality of
schooling, particularly the junior year, some class time is devoted to familiarizing students with
tests requiring writing on demand and/or demonstration of understanding of literary content.
Therefore, PSAT and SAT preparation is also included as an ongoing activity. Students who
require further instruction to ensure their achievement on the ELA will also be addressed.

Attendance Policy:
Attendance is crucial because we will build on what we learn in class. Oral discussion
CANNOT be duplicated if you are absent. You will receive a “0” for the assignment if
unexcused. If the absence is excused, you may make-up assignments. Being frequently
absent and /or late (excused or unexcused) will affect your grade.
Makeup work from an excused absence is the responsibility of the student. Makeup work
should be acquired the day the student returns and completed within 2 days after the
students’ return.
Be on time! All tardies must be excused. Only 3 excused tardies are acceptable, after
that, penalties will be incurred up to my discretion. Unexcused tardies will merit
automatic detentions and grade drops.
General courtesy and respect is expected toward each other. Failure to follow the dynamics of
the classroom environment is a violation and will be dealt with strict disciplinary action.
