P  PROBLEM: What is the problem

you are going to solve?
The problem we are going to solve is how to reduce the plastic waste and how to build a boat.
The information I already know about the problem is the way to reduce plastic waste. We can do it by
reusing the waste to make new stuff. About how to make a boat, I think we can use the material that

People in APIS can use the boat.

I think the problem is a really important one to solve because the problem is about the plastic waste.

Student justification: I think I can 7 because my design brief Teacher Grade:

summarized the existing products in detail and I have explained it.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE THE CONCEPT OF “FORM” IN YOUR OWN WORDS?

Form is an organization that or its own rules to accomplish things. Form is similar to systems. For example, we use the form of finding and
analyzing existing products to get ideas of what to design. Form is the way to express things.

WHAT DID YOU FIND IN YOUR RESEARCH? - (summarize your findings)

I found three existing products in the research. The existing products are all every kind of plastic bottle boats. The first boat is just an original boat,
has a flat bottom with wall surrounded and lifted head. The plastic bottles are stuck together by tapes The second existing product also has a flat
bottom and surrounded walls too, but the head is also flat. The added part is a hut on the boat which is very useful, people can go into the hut to
prevent sunshine and rain. The last product is interesting too, the floor of the boat is made of upside down plastic bottles, so the small bottle
bottoms form the wide boat floor. The one thing different is that this boat doesn’t have walls surrounded, so it is more likely a raft.

WHAT WERE THE MOST INTERESTING AND LEAST INTERESTING PRODUCTS/IDEAS YOU FOUND? - (analyze your findings)

The most interesting product is the BOAT FROM PLASTIC BOTTLES - DIY which is the second product because this product got a little hut on it.
The hut is really useful because people can prevent sunburn and get wet by rain. The idea is fun, hiding into a little hut while floating on water
must be really interesting. The less interesting product is the Recycled plastic bottle boat which is the first product. That product is less interesting
because it looks very normal, no more difference between general boats, just not creative enough to impress people.
HOW DO YOU THINK YOU WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM? WHAT ARE YOUR GENERAL IDEAS FOR YOUR PRODUCT?

I think I will solve the problem because I get the existing products now, so I can research more about the boat and make it with the wasted plastic,
and as long as I make the plastic bottle boat, I recycled plastic bottles to make new stuff which is reducing waste and pollution. The general idea
for my product is to reduce plastic waste by reusing the waste plastic bottles to make new product.

HOW WILL CULTURE INFLUENCE THE FORM OF YOUR PRODUCT?

The culture is the human culture, always protecting nature which is the place where we live. The culture influenced my product, or my product is
going to be designed because of the culture. Wasted plastic is polluting nature, so reduce plastic waste is the way to decrease the waste.
Because of this, I reuse the waste plastic bottles to make the plastic bottle boat.

DEVELOPING IDEAS 2: DEVELOP DESIGN IDEAS B.2

DESIGN IDEA #1

This is my first design. All the information such as the picture from many angles, the length and width, the introduction, the material, the structure
details and the way we are going to build it are in the picture above.
The advantages of this design are:
-It is very easy to make for our group. The structure is very simple.
-People can understand what this design do the first time they see it.
-It is very easy to use. Just like normal boats, sit inside and paddle it.
-It is very safe because there are bottle on the edges so the person on the boat wouldn’t fall off from the boat.

DESIGN IDEA #2
This is my second design. All the information about the boat are in the picture.
The advantages of this design are:
-The boat is very creative. The shape and structure of the boat is very interesting and rare.
-The boat is going to be safe too. Because the shape of this boat is a semicircle, it would never turn over in the water and the person inside would
never fall off.
The limitations of this design:
-This boat is too difficult to make. The structure is complex and we won’t find a good way to connect the bottles.
-I think people wouldn’t understand what is this immediately.

DESIGN IDEA #3

This is my third design. All the information about the boat are listed in the picture.
The advantages of this design are:
-This design looks very nice and regular. The front of the boat make it more like a boat.
-This design is going to be very safe because there are bottles around at the back and the sides, so the person inside wouldn’t fall off.
-People could recognize that it is a boat and use it immediately.
-The material is saved. For the bottles around, we can only put them at the place that the person has the most possibilities to fall, so we don’t
need that much bottles to cover the whole edges.

I think I can get 7 because explained my final design in detail.

CHOSEN DESIGN

Key Features:
● The bottom of the boat is flat and it’s arranged with vertical
bottles.

● The head of the boat is like an angel just like normal boats. The
bottles are all heading the top point. Apart from the head part,
the body part of the boat is just going to be a rectangle.

● The boat is surrounded by lifted bottles all around on the edges.

● The bottles are are going to be connected with tapes.

The advantages of the boat:

● It is very easy to make for our group. The structure is simple.
● People can understand what this design do the first time they
see it.
● It is very easy to use. Just like normal boats, sit inside and
paddle it.
● It is very safe because there are bottle on the edges so the
person on the boat wouldn’t fall off from the boat.

(copy your DESIGN SPECIFICATION here and give your CHOSEN DESIGN a score for each specification. Explain and/or Justify the scores.)

My Design will represent APIS or Global/Regional/Local culture in its FORM.

I think my design can get an 8 because it is made by students in APIS, the students in APIS have the culture in their mind, so they of course
applied their culture into the boat. There student hand made of the boat express the APIS culture.

My final Design will be shaped by the RESOURCES available for its construction.

8 because our boat would only use the plastic bottles and the tapes. We will find old plastic bottles to be the material which means all of them are
reduced.

My final Design will be shaped by COLLABORATION with my team members.

8 because me and my teammates are a team and we all want a good product so we all work hard together to get a good one. Also, we made a
plan already that is distributing the work.

My Design will be appealing to my intended client/customer.

7 because my boat is very interesting because it is made with plastic bottles and it can float with a person inside. There are meaning inside the
boat too, we are reducing the plastic waste to protect the earth from being polluted, people would like it. But maybe some people would not like
the boat because everyone has they own minds.

My Design will not sink.

8 because this design is very safe as above, there are strong protections. The bottom of the boat is going to be very tight too, water won’t come in
and the bottle are able to float the boat and the person up. The material are not going to be heavy too,

I think I can get 8 because I think the improvements I found are all very
useful and I analyze them and explained how am I going to do it.

NAME OF IMPROVEMENT: Thinner the layer

● The body of the boat is too wide and big, we should make it thinner.
● I think this might be helpful because in the water, the smaller things move faster because it doesn’t have that much weight, a little power
can make it go forward and move fast.
● We can make it only 7 columns, just enough for a human to sit on it.

NAME OF IMPROVEMENT: Adding the layer

● I think we should just add one full layer, not a seat.
● Because if there are more bottles, there are more air inside of them. More air can make the boat float better and move faster.
● Since I also want to change another layer thinner, we can use the extra ones to complete this layer, the extra ones from this layer too, they
are all getting thinner and longer.

END OF UNIT REFLECTION

What was your greatest success in this unit?

● Our greatest success in this unit is our boat is able to go onto the water and it is not sinking. This success is made of the process that we
are making the boat. In the process, we plan carefully what to do can make the boat have better function and we are improving the boat a
lot on the way. Our boat is designed stable and it can float well. When we are building it, we make it in the way we design it. We were
building it very carefully, we tape the bottles very tight to prevent the water to come inside. There are two layers to make the boat float
well. The design and the process we were building it is very nice, so the product that is has a very good function exist.

What was your biggest challenge during this unit?

● The biggest challenge in this unit is finding the material for the boat because I am a boarding student so I can barely bring any bottles, and
others can not find that much resources to find bottles too. Finding used bottles is a hard thing, people usually just throw them away, but
reduce this kind of thing is what we are doing, so it is very challenging.

Inquiry

What are the three most important skills you used during this unit? Explain:

● Collaboration ● Thinking ● Self-management

is very hard to make. It needs lots of need to think about how to design. On write journals every time we build, so
people to work together to finish. If we the way of building, we need to think we must finish it on time everyday, or
don’t work together, we can not finish about improvements that can make the else there are going to be tons of work

Also working together can bring people my brain, I can think about more ideas.
more ideas. We can share ideas and
come up with new ones together.

This unit we worked on the ATL SKILLS of collaboration. Which one was the hardest? Why?

Collaboration is the hardest because when people are working together, they always have different ideas and perspectives. So when their ideas
are really different and they disagree with each other, there might be conflicts between people. On the other hand, if one person in the group do
not do work and the work needs multiple people to accomplish, it’s going to become very hard for the people that work.
(sentence starter: “This unit I found the skill of ______ to be most challenging because ______ .”)

What one change you would make to this unit?

I would like to faster the building process. When we were building the boat, sometimes we do very less work. I think we can do more work in one
class. Once we speed up, we can finish the boat that we designed on time, so the basic one has finished, then we would have more time thinking
how to improve the boat so the boat could be better can make a better result in the test. So managing time is very important and I want to do
better at it, we can improve a lot of things if we can do this.
