Field Study 6 portfolio was created guided by the following objectives:

3. Document the best practices of outstanding teachers.

This portfolio showcases the role of the teacher who plays a crucial role in the

development of the students to meet societal formation. Presented here are the

observations and interviews conducted from the different individual/personalities to

get their perspectives on the role of the teacher, the role of the school and the

counterpart of the community in attaining sustainable and quality education.

Responses made show the real life and vicarious experiences of a prospective teacher

As a future teacher my goal to my students is to help them develop their own skills. I
will help my students become a good citizen in the society, by treating them fairly and
inculcate in their mind that every individual as its own capability of doing things. I want
also that my students learned more in my subject taught before living, by employing

be? Why?

If I were a school furniture I want to be a

chair because as a future teacher I’m reliable for the

learning of my students, I will provide to my

I really adhere to progressivism because this educational philosophy reminds me of the

I choose to be ballpen because I want to be a teacher that

can help my students to create their own story through

my teachings. I want to be a teacher that influences a

good value and attitude in life. I want my students to

this country. Just like the ballpen, it can contribute

(vicarious) experiences and values to the learners. It will

allow them to draw their own story ( good story) that will

make them a better person with positive outlook in life.

Why?

I choose chair because I want to be a teacher that has a

strong personality in terms of my teaching through

encouraging my students to learn. I want to be a teacher who

knows how to handle conflict situation and problems regarding

With these two goals, I will ensure that my students will be adept in the real world of

and significance of ‘Education for All,’ wherein every student is seen as equal no

matter what race did you came from, your socio-economic status and the

tradition/belief you believe in. I will teach them the 21st century skills so as to

All” will greatly help me on how to transform the lives of my students-from a mere

student into a productive individual in the future.

c. I will teach my students by giving them hands-on activities so as to allow them

construct their own knowledge out of the activities given. I will give them also the

thus, hesitations of not being accepted is prevented. According to a Chinese proverb,

“It takes a village to raise a child,” thus, if we relate this to the teaching-learning

will use in presenting the subject matter in order that they will be more adept in the

The philosophy that I want to adhere to is the philosophy of progressivism,

because I do believe in the progressivist’s point of view that the student’s world is the

focus and starting point of education. I do believe also on the statement, “students are

the key participants of education,” thus, we must equip our students with the knowledge

and skills that they will need in the future. As a future teacher, I will use the learning

theory of Jerome Bruner’s “Constructivist theory” wherein students construct their own

knowledge through conducting/doing activities and the teacher’s role is to facilitate/guide

the students in achieving its goal.

to inculcate to his/her students is written in the

the teacher checks the paper and give his/her

feedback through grades. The paper will serve as the

“writing tool” wherein one can express his/her own

idea on a particular topic through writing.

Thus, as a future teacher, I would like to be a paper-a tool/instrument through

student’s learning because whatever students have written reflects on what kind of

teacher I am.

Based from the responses given by the teacher, we can say that the teacher is effective in

five areas of the classroom management except in the area of discipline because the

supportive measures established were effective for managing the classroom. However,

among these effective areas of classroom management, the most effective is the record

keeping because the teacher thoroughly monitors and records student’s progress based from

their daily performances.

2. In what are of the classroom management was the teacher least effective? Which of

The teacher is least effective in the area of discipline because she cannot handle well

student’s disruptive behavior that could distract their peer’s concentration. In addition, if

these students with disruptive behavior will not be controlled, the tendency is it may affect

student’s performance and to the extent, targeted competencies may not be achieved. The

teacher has implemented classroom rules and regulations but it may not be agreed between

the teacher and the students. Therefore, students might not follow it.

A good teacher should have the following quality and characteristics:
Good sense of humor
A good teacher should possess a good sense of humor for her to establish well-managed
classroom because she can able to motivate students to participate in the class discussion so there
will be an interactive discussion every session.
Patient
Being patient is one of the good traits of a teacher. Great teacher is patient with their students,
they will not get angry easily, if students misbehave inside the classroom. This also means that she is
able to manage the different abilities of each student inside the classroom, especially to the slow
learner.
Creativity
Effective teachers stimulate creativity, they are excellent communicators, they tell stories and
engage their students in various activity like role playing, talk show etc, which is anchored to the
subject taught.

(1.) Being a proactive disciplinarian. A proactive disciplinarian approach to discipline

students prevents unnecessary disciplinary problems from cropping up.

(2.) Being organized. An organized teacher establishes routines for daily tasks and needs.

Routinized collection of assignments, passing of papers, and preparation of

experiments gives a lot of time and effort. Routinary procedures give rise to orderly

learning environment as well as maximum and optimum use of previous time.

(3.) Being a consistent motivator. Reinforcements and motivations led students to show

positive behaviors. Rewards and praises build student’s self-esteem and encourage

them to practice desirable behavior inside the classroom.

(4.) Being sensitive. Focusing on the needs, problems and interests of the students help

them feel and realize that they are of great importance inside the classroom. This

characteristic of a teacher led students to minimize and even eliminate undesirable

To be able to establish a well-managed classroom, a teacher must possess the ff.

characteristics:

a. Good Facilitator .A teacher must possess this character in order to facilitate the

learning of the students inside the classroom. Facilitating student’s learning while

doing group activities will guide them in achieving their learning goals. Thus,

behavior and learning of the students are monitored.

b. Disciplined. If a teacher is well-disciplined, he/she could be able to impose

discipline inside the classroom. A disciplinarian is not synonymous to a terror

teacher. A disciplinarian teacher is a personwho modifies student’s behavior

through the implementation of classroom rules and regulations agreed by the

teacher and the students.

c. Organized. A teacher should know on how to organize his/her lesson to avoid

Being punctual-This character could help me as an effective classroom manager in

such a way that I can start my class on time and accomplished my tasks as early as I

a. Disciplined-Since I am not yet a teacher I cannot disciplined students but the

discipline I am referring to is self-discipline. This will help me act in a tactful way

Locality of The School


The school is situated in Poblacion II, Sagay City, Negros Occidental. In front of the school is the
SagayBus Terminal which is just a walking distance and is beside the St. Joseph Parish Church.
Its neighboring community composes of residential houses and supermarkets/hypermarkets,
industrial and commercial firms, and other business establishments which made the city “Third
City”.
The historical landmark that can be found in the city and considered as one of its attraction
is the Legendary Siete (the train found in the City Plaza). Siete is a three – feet and six inches
gauge 4-cylinder compound 0-6-6-0 mallet that was built in 1925 by Locomotive Baldwin Works
in Philadelphia, U.S.A. painted with the name Insular Lumber Co. This is considered as the
“World’s most incredible steam survivor” as stated in the book of Colin Goratt, “Iron Dinosaurs”.

Issues/Concerns/Problems of the Community


One of the main concerns of the community is the improper waste disposal and segregation which

could be threatening to the health of the people. According to Hon. Florencio E. Ibanez, the

barangay kagawad assigned to the Environmental Concerns and Solid Waste Management, that

“there are tricycle drivers who throw their garbage everywhere they wanted to. So far there are no

reported cases in relation to peace and order, children and youth concerns, political issues and

assigned personnel (Brgy. Kagawad) in each areas to maintain its proper function. Peace and order

is maintained by the different scheduled barangay tanods in each day and celebration of fiesta is

minimized to avoid the cause of crimes and murderous acts.

The community resources that can be found in the locality are:
Library Hub – can be used for research purposes and other referential tasks.
City Health Office – provide relevant seminars for awareness regarding health issues,
and promoting health campaigns to equip the people in the community with
sufficient knowledge in self-awareness.
\Parks (e.g. Lady Circle, Sagay City Plaza) – may aid in presenting the lesson
through community field trips.
City Gym – can be utilized as venue during the upholding of the school’s activities such as
Intramurals, JS Prom, Graduation, etc.

Community Assistance/Service Given by the School


The school provides assistance to the community through the participation in
different activities namely: tree planting, feeding program, coastal clean-up, mangrove
planting/reforestation, and fiesta celebrations. In addition, the
school advocates on programs like Anti-Illegal drug campaign, feeding program, gift-giving
program especially during Christmas, parenting and child abuse campaign andClean &
Green Activities.
The school teachers serve as resource person especially in the neighboring areas like the
BJMP wherein training of prisoners with welding skills are conducted. They also contribute in
doing research studies by acting as advisers/mentors & transfer technology/livelihood skills
(e.g cookery) to the people in the community.
During town celebrations, the school band leads the parade, join the street dancing,

encountering as of right now. The community in the cooperation with the school tried their

Thus, the school tries to address the issues/concerns/problems of the community & in

return, the community does the same also.

3. What possible linkages can the community and the school have?

“We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible

threads & along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes & return to us as

results”. Thus, linkages and networking with organizations is very essential in the field of

education. One of the linkages made in education is between the school & the community.

Therefore, the interconnection between the school and the community is very beneficial in

the success of educating an individual in the society. As the saying goes, “No man is an

island”, that is why, the school cannot do the educational process alone without the help

and support of different stakeholders (e.g. community, parents, public & private sectors,

etc.).

The possible linkages that the community and school have are:

1) the resources available in the community can be used as educational resources;

(2) the school’s counterpart during fiestas & other activities in the community, e.g. the

school band leads the parade & joining the street dance; and

(3) other activities wherein each one mutually give their counterpart towards a harmonious

community.

1. How did you feel while you were going around the community? What things did you

learn that you might have taken for granted before?

When I go around the community I feel happy because I found out things which I have

taken for granted before, like the Brgy. Hall of Poblacion II, it have mini-library inside in

which students can stay to read.

2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community?

As a future teacher, I think I will became a leader or president in our Purok in which I

will be in-charge in planning and preparing for the events during annual fiesta, like dance

sports, street dancing and etc. In this case the youth will enjoy and develop their skills and

they will not be engage in any vices.

3. How will you encourage more community participation among teachers and students?

Through discussing to my students for example the effect of burning plastics and

improper disposal of garbage to our health and our lives as a whole. After that I will

encourage them to start cleaning up our environment such as coastal clean-up,

panglimpyosasuba,etc.

Then during Christmas day will have gift giving, to encourage them I will discuss to

them the essence of love and also through giving they become blessings to others. And

there will be more blessings to come in their lives, as what the line says, “The more you

give the more you receive.”

I feel tired in going around in the community even if I feel tired but still it is worthy

because of the new experiences that we had with my group mates. There is no thing I had

taken for granted because I had been there when I was in high school.

As a future teacher, these will be my roles in my community:

a. I will teach my students to be aware of the rules and regulations of the community and

teach them to follow it.

b. I will help my community to maintain peace and order through teaching my students

and other members of the community to be a functional and a better teacher in the

c. I will set myself as a good example to the people around me to influence them the good

values and love of their own community.

d. I will support organizations that help in preventing crimes and illegal works.

1. How did you feel while you were going around the community? What things did

you learn that you might have taken for granted before?

As I go around the community, I feel the favorable atmosphere that the people showed

us especially the principal of Sagay National High School and the two barangay Kagawad

of the community during our interview. The people in the community have been so

cooperative in answering our queries not only on the problems and issues that they are

facing but also on the community resources that could help the students, the teachers and

school.

By roaming around, I learned that the school has its nearby community resources such

as the Library Hub, Gymnasium, Public Library,etc., that could really help for the holistic

development of every student which I had taken for granted before. I also learned that the

school and the community are interconnected in the sense that whenever the school is

holding an activity (e.g. tree planting, coastal clean-up, etc.) the community has a great part

on it.

2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community?

In the future, my role in the community as a teacher is to:

a.) become a role model among all the people by keeping myself morally upright and

by not involving in immoral relations, political activities, gambling or any other

activity that could harm me, my family, the people around me and the community;

b.) act as a counselor in matters affecting the welfare of the people;

c.) lead any program that could enhance the environment and resources of the

community; and

it is there as a center of attraction. While going around the community even if the

sunshine’s hot I enjoy a lot because I have the chance to visit and as for me to unwind.

As a future teacher, my role in the community would be an encourager to students to

As I go around the community, I feel as if I am one of the members in the community due

to the fact that the people there are very approachable and receive us with a very warm

welcome especially the school principal of Sagay National High School, who had given her

utmost time and effort to supply the information we need. On the other hand, the things that I

have learned that I might have taken for granted before is the responsibility that the teachers

play inside the school and in the community and the cooperation/collaboration between them

that could greatly help in improving the lives of the people living in the community. As we

have conducted the interview, I have realized these things-that the responsibility of the teacher

is so wide and complex and the school and the community should collaborate/cooperate in

achieving their goals.

As a future teacher, my role in the community is not only to serve as an educator but also

as a mentor and role model. The teacher fills a complex set of roles-some these roles are

performed at home, in school and in the community. Thus, the role of the teacher does not limit

only to the four walls of the classroom. Therefore, I must not limit the things that I can do for

my community just as what Abraham Lincoln said, “Do not think of what your country can

do for you, rather think of what you can do for your country.” This is evident during town

celebrations wherein the teachers is considered as “Purok adviser” or sometimes act as an

emcee. With this, I should possess flexible skills which could use in different situations.

When I’m going around the community, I have observed different structures like the

statues of Dr. Jose Rizal in the Sagay Public Plaza, the train and even the statue of the girl

beside the Tali-ambong. I thought of all of it for display only but now I know I must not

neglect our national hero, the tragedy behind the story of the train and the girl statue which

promotes tourism here in Sagay City. Other than the plaza there are some establishments

like the Mercury Drug Store, Prince Hypermart, Terminals and Church beside the Sagay

National High School. I learned that community around the school really takes it role in

serving its community.

2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community?

As a future teacher, it came to me that my role in my community is that I will be

pursuing what is good for my community. I must not use or make any harmful act against

it, instead I must become a medium to serve the well-being of the people by teaching my

learners how to become like one.

Based from the responses given by the teacher, we can conclude that a global teacher
must be knowledgeable enough on the country’s culture, tradition, ways of living, linguistic
and economic background where s/he will be teaching. Through this, the teacher can
communicate well to his/her students knowing their individuality. Global teachers must be
flexible in delivering his/her topic considering that each students from different parts of the
globe is different from that of the other, thus, it is a great challenge for teacher to meet the

students so as to build rapport with them.

Be a Pro-Change Teacher

Many teachers (especially experienced ones) suffer from what I call “change phobia.”
And if not carefully monitored, even new teachers can be inflicted with this the career-ending
disease. What is “change phobia” you ask? It’s exactly what you may think it is; it’s an
unhealthy fear of change.

As teachers, we can’t afford to be “change phobics”; the nature of our job dictates that we must
remain open to change (sometimes at a moment’s notice). But what if you’re not used to it or
don’t know where to start? Well, I’m glad you asked, because here’s something I want you to
try.

I want to you to do an exercise with your class I call “Teacher for a Day.” The effectiveness of
this exercise depends on the maturity level of your class (and your receptiveness). I would think
4th grade and above would work fine, but I’ll let you make the call.

Have your students take out a blank sheet a paper, and then I want you to write this question on
the board:
“If I was teacher for a day…
this is what I would do to make our class more fun and educational?”
Have each student write down at least one to three ideas on their sheet of paper and turn it in
with their names on it. It doesn’t have to be written in narrative form; it could be written as a list
of items, as long as it’s legible. This shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes.

After they turn in their papers, take them home with you, and see what ideas make the most
sense and are the most realistic to implement. Then simply determine how you can (and will)
incorporate those ideas (i.e., changes) into your lesson plan.

I must warn you to prepare yourself to be shocked by the creative (even weird) ideas you’re
going to receive from your students. Also, as an added (and optional) bonus, announce which
students came up with the best and most creative ideas, and give them some special gift, treat, or
prize.

Trust me, after you implement a few of these ideas, I guarantee you’ll reduce the chances of ever
becoming (or return to being) a “change phobic.”

with a more organized and better ideas. We tend to possess cooperation and respect each

one’s ideas that will be included in this portfolio. Sense of unity, open-mindedness, time-

management, sense of responsibility, resourcefulness, and creativity are the values and

attitudes that we have developed while we are doing the different tasks/assignments
