1. SCOPE

This method statement describes the method and procedure involved in the
installation of temporary shoring and cofferdam for braced excavation to
facilitate the work relating to the construction of the proposed overhead bridge
at chainage 218.608.

Retaining walls at this location are used to protect both the existing railway
and road / bridge. Shoring is also required during the construction of deep
pilecaps at at Pier 1 and Pier 1. Please refer to the layout plan.

The retaining wall will comprise of sheet piles and waler with ground anchor at
calculated intervals (Refer to drawings) along sheet pile wall.

The technical specification, calculation and other relevant information on

machinery and equipment used in this works are included.

2.0 MATERIALS

The following materials shall be used to construct the retaining wall :

2.1 Sheetpile

U Sections will be used for steel sheet piling. They shall be installed
vertically by a vibro hammer to resist lateral earth force.

As the pile comes in 12m or shorter lengths, welding will be used to join
the sheetpiles if a longer length is required. On the other hand, oxy-
acetylene will be used to cut the sheetpiles if these protrude out and
causes a danger to the trains passage. FSP Type IV sheetpiles will be
used for the sheetpile wall next to the existing track, all other areas will
utilise FSP type III sheetpiles.

2.2 Waler

The Waler is a universal beam combination laced together depending on

design and work requirements to transfer forces from the wall element to
ground anchor. The support system comprise of either one level or
several levels of walers latched on the sheetpile retaining wall by
brackets or welding.

2.3 Ground Anchor

The use of tie back anchorage to support the side of wide excavation.
Load on cable anchors transferred to sheet piles through horizontal
waling.

Ground anchors are installed by drilling holes at a downward inclination

to obtain a grouted bond length in a strong soil stratum. Three
components of an anchor are considered in design. There are fixed
anchor length (bond), free anchor length and the anchor head. Ground
anchors may be placed at a single level or several levels depending on
the height retained. Every additional 2m retained height will require an
additional level of anchors. Anchor levels will be placed 500mm from the
top of retained track and at every 2m subsequently, the spacing of
anchors will depend on site conditions (refer to drawings and calculations
for each bridge).

3.0 EQUIPMENT & RESOURCES

The proposed machinery to be utilised shall be as the following :

1. Truck crane (minimum 20 M ton)

2. 3 – 7 tons Hydraulic vibro-hammer c/w power pack (Depending on site
conditions)
3. Welding set
4. Oxy-acetylene cutter
5. Excavator
6. Drilling Machine
7. Grout mixer
8. Grout Pump
9. Hydraulic stressing mono-jack

4.0 METHOD

4.1 Preliminary Work

 Preparation works preceed piling activities.

 The site shall be levelled to allow safe operation of heavy machinery.

 Fabrication and stocking of material such as sheetpiles, walers and PC

strands will be within the bridge ROW. Exact location will be subject
to site constraints.

 Gas palettes and welding machines will be located close to the place
of work.

4.2 Work Flow

The sheetpiles will be installed first. After excavating 500mm deep from

the top of retained track, the first layer of walers and ground anchors
will be installed. This procedure is repeated with excavations increasing to
2m from the installed waler level until the design ground level is reached.

4.2.3Sheetpiling Sequence of Work

The following sequence will be used during sheetpile installation: -

1. Surveyor locates centre of sheet pile wall

2. Appropriate reference line and offset point to the centre of piles

to be set out.

3. Arrange the piles at each point with the use of a timber frame to
ease and maximise installation.

4. Use Vibro-hammer to install piles, a plumb with string will be

used to ensure verticality of the sheetpile wall. A excavator will
be used to guide and correct the pile verticality.

5. Piling will continue until the desired depth is attained.

6. Repeat steps 3 – 6 for the next sheetpile and steps 1 – 6 for

every new sheetpile wall.

4.2.4 Ground Anchor and Waler

3.1 Method of installation

1. Cutting of strand
PC strand will be cut to designed lengths. The strands will
than be arranged into a bundle and necessary spacer blocks
installed to form a “Basket weave” pattern for bond length
portion of anchor. The PC strands will be cleaned free from
mud and other deleterious materials.

2. Drilling
Drilling is carried out using a wash drilling machine. The
depth of the drilled hole shall be verified by contractors
engineer using the Site investigation data obtained previously
(refer to attachment and calculations) and the actual material
encountered during the drilling process. Upon reaching the
required design depth, the drill hole is to be flushed clean
with water or air.

3. Installation
Installation and homing of anchor into the drilled hole shall be
carried out after or before waler installation depending on site
conditions.

4. Grouting
The grout mix of design strength 40N/mm 2 will be produced
using a mechanical mixer that is capable of producing uniform
colloidal grout (design mix and trial mix of the cement grout
will be carried out for consultant’s approval prior to start
grouting). Mixing will be done for a period of 3 minutes before
sieving through a nominal sieve prior to injection. All the
QA/QC requirements will be followed as per UEC Inspection &
Test Plan.

Grout tube will be inserted to the bottom of drill hole.

Grouting using “Tremie” method will be employed, this will
continue until the required anchor length is fully grouted
(refer to calculations and drawings for exact length). Anchor
free length is debunked by bundling and wrapping the strands
with plastic sheets.

5. Stressing
The stressing operation shall be carried out when the grout
has attained a minimum strength of 30N/mm2. A Hydraulic
jack of minimum will be used to stress all the strands of the
ground anchor. The general procedure is as below: -

 Trim strand to uniform length and arrange them in the

correct pattern to fit the anchor head.
 When the anchor head is flushed against the anchor
plates, the wedges are placed and set into position with a
knocking pipe to place the wedges properly.
 Stress all strands to the designed force (refer to attached
calculations).
 Anchor is then locked on to the anchor head.

out to approximately 0.5 to 1.0m below the highest
retained level, anchors are to be installed at this level.
2. Walers comprising of double beam sections are than
installed on brackets welded to the sheetpile
3. Installation of ground anchor will comprise of the
following:-

 Fabrication of tendon
 Drilling of hole
 Installation of anchor
 Grouting
 Stressing of Tendon
 Locking of tendon to anchor head

4. Excavation shall than proceed to 2m below the anchor

level for installation of the next level of anchors.
5. Procedure 3 to 5 is than repeated.
6. Once Sheetpile wall and all anchors are installed,
Excavation to the ground improvement level will be carried
out.
7. Construction of permanent retaining wall and bridge works
shall than proceed.
8. After completion of one half of bridge works and diversion
of track, dismantling of sheetpile wall will be carried out.
