R

SUBJECT: On some ships interferences at the Steering Control system occurred, be-
cause the VDR was directly connected to components of the system.
Therefore we give the following instructions which have unconditionally to
be kept.

INSTRUCTIONS: The interface between the Voyage Data Recorder and the steering control
system must be galvanically isolated. Without such isolation, the steering
control system can be disturbed by the VDR.

Every VDR type and make is concerned.

If it is found out on board that this galvanic isolation does not exist, the
ship's personnel and/or the owner must be alerted to the necessity of a ret-
rofitting. In this case please make a notice in the service report and contact
our service department, which will offer a solution.

A single exception is if the VDR is connected via the NMEA-interface to our

Follow-up amplifier Type 139-155. In this case no retrofitting is required.

IMPORTANT: IF NO APPROPRIATE GALVANICALLY ISOLATED INTERFACE IS

PROVIDED EITHER BY RAYTHON ANSCHUETZ OR THE VDR MAKER,
THE DIRECT USE OF ANY VDR TOGETHER WITH OUR STEERING
SYSTEM IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

IF A THIRD PARTY VDR IS OPERATED TOGETHER WITH OUR STEER-

ING SYSTEM WITHOUT AN APPROPRIATE GALVANICALLY ISO-
LATED INTERFACE ALL RIGHTS FOR WARRANTY AND OR GUAR-
ANTEE WILL EXPIRE ACCORDINGLY.

IN THE EVENT OF ANY BREACH OF THE DUTIES OUTLINED ABOVE

THE BUYER SHALL INDEMNIFY, SAVE OR HOLD HARMLESS RAY-
THEON ANSCHUETZ AT HIS OWN EXPENSES FROM AND AGAINST
ANY LIABILITY, LOSS, DAMAGE, COST AND EXPENSE RESULTING
THEREOF.
