Journal Record for ACMGAS103

In order to fulfil the requirements of competency for this unit, a journal is to be kept and
provided to AIRC as evidence of practical abilities. The journal will contain details of the place
of activity, procedure performed, animal and photographic evidence of the stated procedure.
The photograph provided should be of medium size – 640 x 480 pixels

Go to your online area of this unit and download the editable Microsoft Word document. Type
in your entries and paste images as appropriate. Save to your hard drive and upload into the
course area using the link provided. Your submission will be checked by an AIRC assessor.

The journal is to be kept over a four week period and the following procedures are to be
performed:
 Cleaning a cats environment
This activity is to focus on the cleaning of the cats environment, particularly litter
tray procedures and bedding cleanliness and maintenance
 Cleaning a dogs environment
This activity is to focus of cleaning the dogs environment, particularly the toileting
area and maintaining clean and adequate bedding

 Cleaning the facility – mopping floors
This activity should focus on the procedure of mopping a floor, the type of mop and
bucket, considerations when mopping etc

 Feeding animals – this must include the feeding of:

o 2 x different cats requiring different types of food
o 2 x different dogs requiring different types of food
o 2 other animals from different species from the following list:
 Rabbits
 Guinea pigs,
 Rats,
 Mice,
 Birds,
 The feeding log should include brief details on:
o The type of food for the animal
o How the food is presented
o The type of feeding receptacle used
o Encouragement for the animal to eat
o Disposal of uneaten food

These procedures can be demonstrated in an actual animal care workplace or is a situation

that reasonably approximates one. For example using your own pets or those of relations or
friends, perform the same procedure using available equipment–cat carrier cage, dog leads,
kennels, household table

This will equal a total of 9 (nine) journal records

Cleaning a cat environment
Date: Place: Animal Procedure
5/11/11 ABC cattery, 101 Cat ‘Timmy’ To remove all cage contents and
Road, Catmore DSH, 6yrs thoroughly clean the cage

Details Gloves were worn to protect hands from chemical usage and any bodily excretions that
may need to be disposed off.
All bedding (towel and ‘fluffy’) were removed from his cage and checked to ensure no
faeces or other solid debris was on it, and then placed in the laundry basket; if, for
example faeces was present this would have to be removed prior to placing bedding in
laundry container.
The cat litter tray was removed and it was noted that he had passed faeces and urine in
the tray; the used litter and faeces and urine was then placed into a plastic bag; this
was performed by using a scoop and holding the litter tray over the bag, the contents
were scooped directly into the bag. The litter tray was then sprayed with dilute
disinfectant – F10.
Food and water bowls were removed (again noting that he had eaten all his food) and
placed in warm soapy water.
Once the cage was empty, it was washed with soapy water to remove any surface dirt
and larger debris; this was done by wiping with paper towel so that the debris was
picked up by the towel and can be immediately disposed off.
The cage was then sprayed with dilute disinfectant; 1:1000 dilution and left for the
contact time required of 2 mins. Food and water bowls were washed and the litter tray
rinsed whilst the disinfectant had contact time with the cage.
The next stage was to rinse the cage to ensure that all residual disinfectant is removed
– this was performed spraying with tepid water and then wiping dry with paper towels.
The cage was then checked to ensure fully dry, prior to placing fresh bedding in it.
Gloves were immediately disposed of in the bin

Mopping a floor
Date: Place: Area (e.g. reception) Procedure
My father’s place Living room -Sweep debis,
-put on the ‘wet floor’ sign.
-ensure disinfectant dilution rate in
----mop bucket
-mop with effort.
Details Things to prepare
- sweep , disposable dust cloth
– mop ,bucket , F10*SC
- PPE: disposable gloves,
-garbage bags in empty general waste bin.
-wet floor sign
- animals removed from the area prior cleaning, (they are in their own enclosures in
another room).
-Measuring cup

First, I swept the floor, ensure no debris remains

Disposable dry dusting cloth is attached to the sweep, it collects the debris and animal
fur. I then collects the dust and dispose the dry dusting cloth into general waste.
Wet floor sign is put onto the floor to ensure nobody is stepping into the area.
The type of mop I chose is based on its ease of use, ability to spin away water
and replacability.a removable mop head that can be removed Mop bucket is
chosen based on its ‘foot squeeze’ mehanism. Both the bucket and mop is made by 3M
I put in 8L of water into the Bucket.
Because the place don’t have Parvovirus nor Fungi spores. But to be safe, its
better to assume there is fungi, yeast of mould. Thus F10*SC dilution rate of
1:500 water is used in this case.I put in 8L of room temp water into the Bucket,
then 16ml of F10*SC to attain 1:500 dilution rate.
I used the measuring cup to make sure i poured 8L of room temp water into the bucket,
the used the measuring cup to ensure 16ml of F10*SC is poured into the solution.
I drenched the mop head into the bucket, then I gave the solution a good stir by using
the mop head to ensure its fully drenched. I squeezed to ensure no dripping water on
the mop head. Then I mop the floor with pushing effort in order to remove dirt, mop
head is also rinsed in the bucket frequently. the floor is left to dry for 15mins.then I
dispose the bucket of water down into the drain carefully. Rinse both the mop and
bucket. When the floor is completely dried, I take can takeaway the ‘Wet floor’ sign.

Feeding Cat – Animal 1

Da Place: Animal Procedure
te:
My Apartment BB C

De Type of food :
tail
s BB is 2 years old female desexed Domestic Shorthair.
Because BB is diagnosed of chronic diarrhoea in the past, she was suggested by her vet to have
“Royal Canin Gastro Intestine” dry Kibble daily for her diet.
his diet is highly palatable, have animal protein as main ingredient, along with necessary amount of
vitamins, minerals and taurine. The ingredients also contain good quality animal protein, which is
essential for helping the cats’ digestion.

According to the feeding guide of the manufacturer, BB weight 3kg, she is not too fat and not too
thin thus should be given 42 grams of drying kibble daily.

BB is fed twice a day. 7am and 7pm respectively. She usually finish all of her kibbles.

To prepare, first I take out the following,

1)clean stainless steel bowls 2) bowls holder 3) dry kibble container 4) scale 5)dish soap
6) measuring cup
I washed my hands, pat try with papertowel. Take out the scale and put the scale container on top.
It should be on 0. Then I open the dry kibble container and pour the dry kibble onto the scale
carefully until it shows 21grams.Then I close the dry kibble container and put it back to the dry
cupboard. Then I put the dry kibble into the clean stainless steel container.

Given BB’s weight is 3kg. Her daily water consumption is 120ml – 180ml (given normally cat’s daily
water consumption is 40-60ml/ kg.

Then I take out the measuring cup, pour filtered clean water into it and stop at the 180ml mark.
After ensuring 180ml water is in the measuring cup, I pour the water from measuring cup to the
the stainless steel water receptacle.

Both Water and Food receptacles are stainless steel bowls that can be put on an elevated holder.
An elevated holder helps the cat eating more comfortably, I also noticed BB eat more after using an
elevated one. Stainless steel is used because it don’t break like glass or ceramic bowls. I don’t want
to use a plastic bowl as it cannot be cleaned via hot water, as a plastic melt when hot water is
used. But I can clean stainless steel via hot water and soap without concern in material melting.

BB is usually around when I put the water and food receptacles onto the receptacle stand. I will
pick her up and place her in front of the filled receptacles to encourage her to eat. BB usually feel
safer when I look at her when she is eating, thus I would be behind her while she is eating.
Usually I point at the water receptacle first, then she will know the water receptacle has been
cleaned, dried and filled with clean water again. BB will drink a bit before eating her dry kibble.

Usually after 30mins BB will finish her meal, then I will soak both the food bowl and the scale
container into soapy water , then rinse it and dry with paper towels.

Feeding Cat – Animal 2

Date: Place: Animal Procedure
My Neighbours Home Feline named FAFA Feed Wet food

Details Fafa is pedigree feline, an American Curl.

Fafa is a female,4 years old, desexed and currently weights 3.2kg.

Type of food that fafa is fed with is Monpetit wet cans.

The wet can shown in the picture mainly contains Tuna, along with VitA,
Taurine and a few other types of mineral& fatty acids. Each monpetit wet can weights
85grams.

Fafa consume two monpetit wet cans per day.

She is fed at specific times, four times a day, 6am, noon, 6pm, midnight
For 6am and 6pm meal times, usually the owner will be opening wet cans.
In the picture, it is 6pm , i opened the wet can from the kitchen and Fafa immediately
meows and went
to the kitchen door eagerly waiting for her meal.
i put only half of the wet can as that Fafa can only finish half can at at time.
for the remaning half, i would put it into a glass container, sealed by gladwrap and put it
into the fridge.

Her wet food receptacle is a flat stainless steel plate, its chosen as it is a durable
material, and fafa seemed able to eat better
if a flat dish is used. I place the dish next to the kitchen door, where Fafa usually have
her meals.

THen i would drain out the existing water from the plastic receptacle and put filtered
room temperature water into the receptacle.
This type of plastic receptacle is used as the owner have three cats in the house, and
they share the same water receptacle.
the plastic bottle can hold up to 750ml. Three of the cats are around 3kg. Thus their
water consumption is definitely less than 750ml.

This help the owner to estimate roughly how much water did their cats drink daily.

To encourage the Fafa to eat, her wet food is served in room temperature.
Around 11:45am and 11:45pm, her remained wet food in the fridge will be reheated by
steam roughly 5 minutes and left in room
temperature for 10 mins to let the food go down to room temperature.

For disposal of uneaten food, i swipe off the remained food in the steel plate with a
tissue, throw away the tissue and the wet can into general rubbish bin.
Then wash the steel plate with soap
