MEASUREMENT OF SLOT DEPTH & WIDTH NOVEMBER 2019

1. INTRODUCTION
In science and engineering, objects of interest have to be characterized by
measurement and testing. Measurement is the process of experimentally
obtaining quantity values that can reasonably be attributed to a property of a
body or substance.
 Metrology is the science of measurement.
 Metrology is also a fine avenue for discussing accuracy, error, and
calibration
 Testing is the technical procedure consisting of the determination of
characteristics of a given object or process, in accordance with a
specified method.
In metrology (the science of measurement), a standard is an object, system, or
experiment that bears a defined relationship to a unit of measurement of a
physical quantity.
 Metrology is mainly concerned with the following aspects
 Unit of measurement and their standards.
 Errors of measurement.
 Changing the units in the form of standards.
 Ensuring the uniformity of measurements.
 New methods of measurement developing.
 Analyzing these new methods and their accuracy.
 Establishing uncertainty of measurement.
 Gauges designing, manufacturing and testing.
 Researching the causes of measuring errors.
 Industrial Inspection.
2. OBJECTIVE
The objective of this lab experiment is to decide whether the part is
acceptable or not by measuring the width and depth of the keyway and checking
its accuracy with the required dimension limit or tolerance.

3. EQUIPMENTS AND INSTRUMENTS USED

The equipment’s and instruments used during the lab session are:

 Keyway caliper
 Vernier caliper
 V-block
 U- clamp

4. PROCEDURES
 The following are the step-by-step procedures to follow while taking
measurements of the width.

1. Put the part to be measured on the v –block

2. Clamp the shaft with the c-clamp
3. Using the venire caliper measure the width of the keyway
4. Put the part to be measured on the v –block
5. Clamp the shaft with the c-clamp
6. Using the venire caliper measure the width of the keyway
And these are the step-by-step procedures to follow while taking the
measurements for the depth.
1. Put the shaft to be measured on the v –block
2. By using u-clamp clamp the shaft with c-clamp
3. Using keyway caliper adjust the reference to zero on shaft out of
keyway position and tighten the nut and rotate the shaft to the
keyway position and push the tail.
4. Read the depth of the keyway on the caliper
N.B: While taking the measurement you have to have a perpendicular
vision with the reading.

6. CONCLUSION
From the above measurements and results indicate or shows us all the measures
taken in width are not above or below the recommended range of 0 and -
0.015mm. Therefore, all of them are in good dimensional accuracy.

From the depth measurement for parts 01, 02, 03 and 05 are in good
dimensional accuracy but 03,04&06 are rejected because of limit, which is
above or below the recommended range of 0.2 mm.

As a conclusion the measurement 01, 02 and 05 have good quality and are
acceptable in both width and depth of the slot measurement.

A VERTICAL MILLING MACHINE is used to male a keyway in a shaft. Assuming the

machine is properly calibrated, table is firm with no vibration and assuming
the V BLOCK properly holds the shaft we suppose the errors may be caused by
human error thus moderate machining skills. We do not think these errors are
caused by vibration or by wrong cutting tool, because these would have also
lead also to width error. But to make a keyway once a certain depth is
achieved just a linear motion is needed to achieve full keyway. Thus the extra
depth measured is made wrongly by the operator. The operator should have
measured the piece every time depth is increased.
