TEENAGE PREGNANCY: HOW IT AFFECTS STUDENTS

Abstract
This study aims to know if teenage pregnancy can affect the student in any way even if
each student comes from different backgrounds in society whether they are poor or rich.
According to the National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) that in 2013 one in ten
young Filipino women age 15-19 has begun childbearing: 8 percent are already mothers and
another 2 percent are pregnant with their first child according to the results of the 2013 National
Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS). Among young adult women age 20 to 24, 43 percent
are already mothers and 4 percent are pregnant with their first child. Teenage pregnancy has
become a public health issue because of their observed negative effects on young teenagers of
the 21st century. The researchers conducted a survey with 50 students of Asian College and all
were given a survey type questionnaire which consists of close ended questions. After the survey
the researchers tallied the answers and the researchers found out that teenage pregnancy can
really negatively affect a student in school shown by the results that the survey gave.

TEENAGE PREGNANCY: HOW IT AFFECTS STUDENTS

Chapter 1
Introduction

I. Rationale and Background of the Study

Teenage pregnancy is developing at such a rapid pace within developing countries

across the globe, teenage pregnancy continues to received increased amount of
attention because of the early age at which adolescents engage in sexual activity like a
pandemic. It has become very rampant in our societies. It has become a fragment to
some teenagers in today’s society. Teenage pregnancy has brought disappointment
and disgrace to parents and families and the teenager involved will develop problems
physically, emotionally and especially mentally.

Teenage pregnancy causes personal, family and societal problems. For example,
when a teenage girl gets pregnant, she suffers serious consequences. She may also
make her family members suffer her own consequences. The girl’s carelessness
forces her family members to intervene so as to help her cope with the pregnancy.
This ends up overburdening her family members.

II. Statement of the Problem

Research Problem:

How does teenage pregnancy affect students in the 21st century? Will the effects be
negative or positive?

1. What would be the impact of teenage pregnancy to students?

2. How does it affect their performance in school?

II. Hypothesis

Null Hypothesis:

Teenage pregnancy has a great impact to students negatively because of the stress and trauma
that comes with it.

Alternative Hypothesis:

Teenage pregnancy may have its positive effects because the experience would teach the
teenager and the teenager may become an agent for prevention.

III. Significance of the Study

Teenage pregnancy is an important issue for several reasons, when girls drop out of school
because of pregnancy, their future socioeconomic prospects are significantly reduced, so that is
why this research is important in order to reduce the incidents on teenage pregnancy and to
reduce the effects it will give towards young teenage girls. And with regards to this the
researchers conducted this research to know how teenage pregnancy affects students and the
result of the research will benefit the following:

 Students – This research will help students to have the idea of the effects in teenage
pregnancy.

 Parents. This research will help the Parents to continue to support and to monitor his/her
son or daughter.

 Teachers. This research will help the Teachers to teach his/her students the idea on what
teenage pregnancy is all about

7

 Future Researcher. This will help the Future Researchers to have an idea on what to add
on the continuation for this research.

IV. Scope and Limitation of the Study

Scope

This research aims to identify the effect on teenage pregnancy.

Limitation

The researchers collected information through a survey questionnaire that consist of 50

Respondents in Asian College. The respondents were expected to answer the questions as
honestly as possible.

V. Definition of terms

Review of Related Literature

According to EF Jones, JD Forrest N. Goldman, Henshaw-Family planning (1985), the

result of a coin-parative study of adolescent pregnancy and childbearing in developed countries,
under taken by The Alan Guttmacher Institute. Although teen pregnancy rates have declined in
recent decades, the rate is still one of the highest in the developed world. By tracking the
changing health care landscape and providing quality data and policy analysis, the Guttmacher
Institute strives to shed light on teen pregnancy and on the social and economic factors that
contribute to it. Guttmacher promotes policies and programs to enable teens to avoid unintended
pregnancy.

According to R. Jewkes, C Vundule, F. Maforah, E Jordaan – Social Science and medicine,

(2001). Teenage pregnancy is extremely common, whilst it’s a problematic nature it is a subject
of debate, it reflects a pattern of sexual activity which put teenagers at risk of HIV. One in five
pregnant teenagers is infected with the said virus.

According to www.healthline.com/health/adolescent pregnancy, teenage pregnancy is a

pregnancy of a woman 18 years of age or younger. A woman can get pregnant if she had
intercourse with a man at a young age after she begun having regular monthly periods.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) in 2017, around 194,000
babies were born to American girls alone between the ages of 15 to 19.

According to L. Bunting, C. McAuley (2004), from the research available in America and Great
Britain it would appear that the men who father the child by teenage mothers tend to be a few
years older than their teenage partners hinting that at such a young age teenagers are already
showing intimate relationships with their partners.

According to JW. Finkelstein, JA. Finkelstein, M. Christie (1982), teenage pregnancy reports
that general health and related outcome and occurrence may fall to women at ages 14, 15, and 16
and that teenage pregnancy reach an unprecedented level of statistics.

According to Josefina N. Natividad, Sc.D (2013), the National Demographic and Health Survey
and the latest result of the 2011 Family Health Survey, shows that teenage pregnancy in the
Philippines, measured as the proportion of women who have begun childbearing in their teen
years, has been steadily rising over a 35-year period. These teenage mothers are predominantly
poor, reside in rural areas and have low educational attainment.

9
TEENAGE PREGNANCY: HOW IT AFFECTS STUDENTS

According to Krisse (2011), that in the Philippines, according to the 2002 Young Adult Fertility
and Sexuality Study by the University of the Philippines Population Institute (Uppi) and the
Demographic Research and Development Foundation, 26 percent of our Filipino youth
nationwide from ages 15 to 25 admitted to having a premarital sex experience. What’s worse is
that 38 percent of our youth are already in a live-in arrangement.

According to Cristopher R. Parungao and Lowell P. Bautista, unintended teenage pregnancy is

an ever-present issue in developing countries such as the Philippines. The impact of teenage
pregnancy affects the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing of the adolescents.
Teen pregnancies carry extra health risks to both the mother and the baby. Nurses play a crucial
role in supporting young people as trusted practitioners in a range of settings. This study aimed
to explore the lived experiences of the teenage pregnant women. Six adolescent female aged 12-
19 years old who were pregnant with their first child agreed to participate.

According to National Demographic and Health Survey, PSA, that one in ten young Filipino
women age 15-19 has begun childbearing: 8 percent are already mothers and another 2 percent
are pregnant with their first child according to the results of the 2013 National Demographic and
Health Survey (NDHS). Among young adult women age 20 to 24, 43 percent are already
mothers and 4 percent are pregnant with their first child

According to Carin Van der Hor, that National Youth Commission, supported by the
Department of Health and the World Health Organization, convened the 2014 National Summit
on Teen Pregnancy last April 24. This summit, which saw the active participation of adolescent
youth, delivered a clear message: Adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH), or the lack
thereof, is fast becoming the defining issue of this generation of young Filipinos. Without a
robust response from all stakeholders, the Philippines is on track toward a full-blown, national
teenage pregnancy crisis.
