ments, questions and presentations. delegate, Cassie Eckhardt
There are some humorous moments, making one
question, Why us? Why at our table? The first day is not
even half over, but we’ve had three separate cell phones go off, just at our table! It’s funny. What part
of, ―turn off your cell phones,‖ don’t we understand? The gyrations of individuals trying to muffle the
ring tones is a welcome break of levity in a sometimes droll recital of committee reports and presenta-
tions.
It is old home week for me. I see, and engage with a glance, old friends or members of the vari-
ous diocesan committees with whom I’ve served over the years. If we each have a moment, we share a
hug or a handshake, a brief word or reminiscence. Old home week!
Day 2: Hospitality: Sally and I change tables from where we sat on Day 1, aligning ourselves to see
the podium and screen. Tables in the room are empty, unmarked, unreserved. We place our bags on
two chairs and go to get coffee. I get back first. There is a woman standing by our chairs, looking at
our bags with great agitation. I walk up and say good morning and explain that the bags are ours. She
says, ―But this is OUR table.‖ Her companion seems chagrined, saying it’s okay. She says, ―But I
wanted to sit here with OUR group.‖ Now, the rest of the table was empty, as were the surrounding
tables. I said ―Okay, I’ll go tell Sally and we’ll move.‖ Her companion says, ―Really, it’s okay.‖
She is still upset. At this point my discomfort level is high, so I say to her, ―Well, if nothing
else, I can take a hint,‖ and I walk away to get Sally so we can move. Companion is fully embarrassed.
Me too. I feel unwelcome and embarrassed, and ashamed for my response. I reported to Sally and she
moved us to another table. And, guess what — the other
people left that table also. It sits empty, a reminder that
hospitality works both ways. We all could have handled
it better.
In his address, the Bishop said: ―Don’t go look-
ing for the best house, the best party, the best meal. Do
the work where you are.‖ Timely, no?
Overall there has been good humor and goodwill,
reunion, forgiveness and intellectual discourse. All is
well and all shall be well and all manner of things shall
be well.

St. Francis’ Spiritual Offerings during the Week

Mondays from 5:30-6:15 p.m. at the parish house (210 S. Central) we gather for prayer.
Using Scripture appointed for that day, we pray for the people of St. Francis’, those who haven’t
joined us yet, those on our prayer list, the needs of our community, and the world.
We close each session with Compline from 6-6:15 p.m.

Fridays from 10-11:30 a.m. at Michelle’s (104 S. Central) we study the Bi-
ble readings appointed for the upcoming Sunday.
Please join us for these meetings whenever you can, whether weekly or once
in a while. All are welcome.
