It is very difficult to succeed in the music business; nine out of ten bands that release a first record fail to
produce a second. Surviving in the music industry requires luck and patience, but most of all it requires an intricate
knowledge of how a record company functions. The process begins when a representative of a company’s Artist and
Repertoire (A &R) department visits bars and night clubs, scouting for young, talented bands. After the
representative identifies a promising band, he or she will work to negotiate a contract with that band. The signing of
this recording contract is a slow process. A company will spend a long time investigating the band itself as well as
current trends in popular music. During this period, it is important that a band reciprocate with an investigation of its
own, learning as much as possible about the record company and making personal connections within the different
departments that will handle their recordings. Once a band has signed the contract and, has finished recording an
album, the Publicity and Promotions department takes over. This department decides whether or not to mass produce
and market the band’s album. Most bands fail to make personal contacts in this second department, thus losing their
voice in the important final process of producing and marketing their album. This loss of nice often contributes to the
band’s failure as a recording group.

In the United States, presidential elections are held in years evenly divisible by four (1888, 1900, 1964, etc.).
Since 1840, American presidents elected in years ending with zero have died in office, with one exception. William
H. Harrison, the man who served the shortest term, died of pneumonia only several weeks after his inauguration.
Abraham Lincoln was one of four presidents who were assassinated. He was elected in 1860, and his
untimely death came just five years later. James A. Garfield, a former Union army general from Ohio, was shot
during his first year in office (1881) by a man to whom he wouldn't give a job. While in his second term of office
(1901), William McKinley, another Ohioan, attended the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. During
the reception, he was assassinated while shaking hands with some of the guests. John F. Kennedy was assassinated in
1963 in Dallas only three years after his election.
Three years after his election in 1920, Warren G. Harding died in office. Although it was never proved, many

serve so long a term. He had contracted polio in 1921 and eventually died of the illness in 1945.
Ronald Reagan, who was elected in 1980 and reelected four years later, suffered an assassination attempt but

III. Circle the best option A, B, C, or D to answer the following questions: (1.0 point)

Man is a land animal, but he is also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the
need of man. The sea has provided man with food and a convenient way to travel to many parts of the
world. Today, nearly two thirds of the world’s population live within 80 km of the sea coast.

In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive. Resources
on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many of man’s needs.
The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man’s technology is impressive. Oil and gas
explorations have been carried out for nearly 30 years. A lot of valuable minerals exist on the ocean floor
ready to be mined.

Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and
shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by Oriental people.

Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm
temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and
waves offer possible use as a source of energy.

Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development of strong,
new materials has made this possible.

The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by the year 2050s the
problems that prevent us from fully exploiting the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea will be
largely solved.

3. The sea serves the needs of man because ……………..…..

A. it provides man with sea food. B. it offers oil to man.

C. it supplies man with minerals. D. all of the above.

4. The word Oriental people in the fourth paragraph probably means ……………..…..

A. European people. C. Asian people. B. African people. D. American people.

5. We can conclude from the passage that ……………..…..

A. the sea resources have largely been used up.

B. the sea, in a broad sense, hasn’t yet been developed.

C. the problems that prevent us from fully exploiting the sea have already been solved.

Over the past 600 years, English has grown from a language of few speakers to become the
dominant language of international communication. English as we know it today emerged
around 1350, after having incorporated many elements of French that was introduced following
the Norman invasion of 1066. Until the 1600s, English was, for the most part, spoken only in
England and had not extended even as far as Wales, Scotland or Ireland. However, during the
course of the next two centuries, English began to spread around the globe as a result of
exploration, trade (including slave trade), colonization, and missionary work. Thus, small
enclaves of English speakers became established and grew in various parts of the world. As
these communities proliferated, English gradually became the primary language of international
business, banking and diplomacy.

Currently, about 80% of the information stored on computer systems worldwide is in English.
Two - thirds of the world’s science writing is in English, and English is the main language of
technology, advertising, media, international airports, and air traffic controllers. Today there are

The Hollywood sign in the hills that line the northern border of Los Angeles is a famous landmark
recognized the world over. The white – painted, 50 – foot – high, sheet mental letters can be seen from
great distances across the Los Angeles basin.

The sign was not constructed, as one might suppose, by the movie business as a means of celebrating the
importance of Hollywood to this industry; instead, it was first constructed in 1923 as means of advertising
homes for sale in a 500 – acre-housing subdivision in a part of Los Angeles called “Hollywood land”. The
sign that was constructed at time, of course, said “Hollywood land”. Over the years, people began referring
to the area by the shorten version “Hollywood” and after the sign and its site were donated to the city in
1945, the last four letters were removed.

The sign suffered for years of disrepair, and in 1973, it needed to be completely replaced, at a cost of $
27,700 per letter. Various celebrities were instrumental in helping to raise needed funds. Rock star Alice
Cooper, for example, bought an O in memory of Groucho Marx, and Hugh Hefner of Playboy fame held a

III. Read the passage and choose the best answer A, B, C, or D to each of the
questions(1.0 point)
In 1826, a Frenchman named Niépce needed pictures for his business. He was not a
good artist, so he invented a very simple camera. He put it in a window of his house and
took a picture of his yard. That was the first photograph. The next important date in the
history of photography was 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture
of his studio. He used a new kind of camera and a different process. In his
pictures, you could see everything clearly, even the smallest details. This kind of
photograph was called a daguerreotype.
Soon, other people began to use Daguerre's process. Travelers brought back
daguerreotypes from all around the world. People photographed famous buildings, cities,
and mountains.
In about 1840, the process was improved. Then photographers could take pictures of
people and moving things. The process was not simple and photographers had to carry lots
of film and processing equipment. However, this did not stop photographers, especially in
the United States. After 1840, daguerreotype artists were popular in most cities.
Matthew Brady was one well-known American photographer. He took many portraits
of famous people. The portraits were unusual because they were lifelike and full of
personality. Brady was also the first person to take pictures of a war. His 1862 Civil War
pictures showed dead soldiers and ruined cities. They made the war seem more real and
more terrible.
In the 1880s, new inventions began to change photography. Photographers could buy
film ready-made in rolls, instead of having to make the film themselves. Also, they did not
have to process the film immediately. They could bring it back to their studios and develop
it later. They did not have to carry lots of equipment. And finally, the invention of the small
handheld camera made photography less expensive.
With a small camera, anyone could be a photographer. People began to use cameras
just for fun. They took pictures of their families, friends, and favorite places. They called
these pictures "snapshots".
Documentary photographs became popular in newspapers in the 1890s. Soon
magazines and books also used them. These pictures showed true events and people. They
were much more real than drawings.
Some people began to think of photography as a form of art. They thought that
photography could do more than show the real world. It could also show ideas and feelings,
like other art forms.

who studies how to use a dictionary effectively will be possible to work independently for much of
the time, and will gain considerable insight into the workings of the English language. He or she
will be able to confirm the meanings of the words in a text which contextual clues are insufficient,
pronounce words accurately by studying the phonetic transcriptions, and use words accurately both
when speaking or writing. Make sure you make room for at least one good monolingual dictionary

III. Read the following passage and choose the best answer. (1 pt)
These stories of killer bees in the news in recent years have attracted a lot of attention as the bees
have made their way from South America. Killer bees are reputed to be extremely aggressive in nature,
although experts that their aggression may have been somewhat inflated.
The killer bee is a combination of the very mild European strain of honeybee and the considerably
more aggressive African bee, which was created when the African strain was imported into Brazil in 1955.
The African bees were brought into Brazil because their aggression was considered an advantage: they
were far more productive than their European counterparts in that they spent a higher percentage of their
time working and continued working longer in inclement weather than did the European bees.
These killer bees have been known to attack humans and animals, and some fatalities have
occurred. Experts point out, however, that the mixed breed known as the killer bee is actually not at all as
aggressive as the pure African bee. They also point out that the attacks have a chemical cause. A killer bee
stings only when it has been disturbed; it is not aggressive by nature. However, after a disturbed bee stings
and flies away; it leaves its stinger embedded in the victim. In the vicera attached to the embedded stinger
is the chemical isoamyl acetate, which has an odor that attracts other bees. As other bees approach the
victim of the original sting, the victim tends to panic, thus disturbing other bees and causing them to sting.
The new stings create more of the chemical isoamyl acetate which attracts more bees and increases the
panic level of the victim. Killer bees tend to travel in large clusters or swarms and thus respond in large
numbers to the production of isoamyl acetate.

VIII. Read the following passage carefully and choose the best answer to each question (2 points)
I. Read the passage and answer the question
A team of Russian scientists has challenged the theory that the woolly mammoths became extinct
10,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age. The scientists have reported that the beasts may have survived
until 2000 B.C. on an island off the coast of Siberia, where researchers 5 uncovered 29 fossilized woolly
mammoth teeth ranging in age from 4,000 to 7,000 years. The question to be asked now is, how did these
prehistoric pachyderms survive in their island environment? One possibility is that they adapted to their
confined surroundings by decreasing their bulk. This theory is based on their smaller tooth size, which 10
has led scientists to believe that they were only 6 feet tall at the shoulder compared with 10 feet of their
full-sized counterpart. But would this be enough to enable them to survive thousands of years beyond that
of other mammoths? Researchers are still working to uncover the reasons for this isolated group’s belated
disappearance.

6. According to the scientists, the woolly mammoths may have managed to survive because they
A. shed their hair B. grew smaller teeth
C. became herbivores D. decreased in size
7. According to the passage, the reason for the disappearance of the mammoths on the island is
A. that the temperature changed B. is not yet known

Write your answers in the boxes provided. There is an example at the beginning (0). (15 points)

i The plans for the future of films vi Too true to life?

ii The history of cinema vii Uncertainty about financial advantages
iii Integrating other events into cinema viii Indecision about a name
iv Current problems with distribution ix The contrasts of cinema today
v An unexpected advantage
The end of silver screen?
Cinema technology has remained much the same for a century, so when will it go digital?
Kevin Hilton views the projections.
Paragraph 0. Cinema is full of contradictions. It is high-tech and old-fashioned at the same time.
Today’s films are full of digital sound and computer-generated special effects. Yet they are still
stored on celluloid film, the basis of which is more than 100 years old. They are also displayed
with projectors and screens that seem to belong to our great grandparents’ generation.
Paragraph 1. Now that we are in the second century of cinema, there are moves to bring the
medium right up to date. This will involve revolutionizing not just how films are made but also
how they are distributed and presented. The aim is not only to produce and prepare films digitally,
but to be able to send them to movie theatres by digital, electronic means. High-resolution digital
projectors would then show the film. Supporters say this will make considerable savings at all
stages of this chain, particularly for distribution.
Paragraph 2. With such a major technological revolution on the horizon, it seems strange that the
industry is still not sure what to call itself. This may appear a minor point, but the choices, ‘digital’
cinema and ‘electronic’ cinema (e-cinema), suggest different approaches to, and aspects of, the
business. Digital cinema refers to the physical capture of images; e-cinema covers the whole chain,
from production through post-production (editing, addition of special effects and construction of
soundtrack) to distribution and projection.
Paragraph 3. And what about the effects of the new medium? The main selling point of digital
cinema is the high resolution and sharpness of the final image. But those who support the old-
fashioned approach to film point to the celluloid medium’s quality of warmth. A recurring criticism
of video is that it may be too good: uncomfortably real, rather like looking through an open
window. In 1989, the director of the first full-length American digital high-definition movie
admitted that the picture had a ‘stark, strange reality to it’.
Paragraph 4. Even the money-saving aspect of e-cinema is doubted. One expert says that existing
cinemas will have to show the new material and not all of them will readily or rapidly furnish
themselves with the right equipment. ‘E-cinema is seen as a way of saving money, because print
costs a lot,’ he says. ‘But for that to work, cinemas have to be showing the films because cinemas
are the engine that drives the film industry.’
Paragraph 5. This view has promoted some pro-digital entrepreneurs to take a slightly different
approach. HD Thames is looking at reinventing the existing cinema market, moving towards e-
theatre, which would use digital video and projection to present plays, musicals and some sporting
events to the public. This is not that different from the large-screen TV system that was set up in
New York in 1930, and John Logie Baird’s experiments with TV in the late 1920s and early 30s.
