Statement of Purpose

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Vaibhavi Mohan and I am a senior earing my degree in musical theatre

performance with a minor in public service and public policy. I am seeking the Creative

Constellations Grant for my senior concert in May 2020. Attached you will find my creative

resume, a statement of purpose, and a budget overview for your review.

I have been very involved in the ASU theatre community since my freshman year and

have participated in many productions in varying capacities from performer to-most recently-

director. As a director, I finally had the opportunity to be on the other side of the table and make

conscious casting decisions. As an artist of color, I was very aware of the optics of my casting

decisions. This is something that, in my experience, white directors very rarely think about or

make it an afterthought. For us, it is our first though in the casting process. Recently, I have

encountered more opportunities where I am in a position of power in the room and my opinions

are being taken seriously. I want to take this positive momentum and use it to begin an essential

conversation that we need to be having in Arizona.

The Arizona music and theatre community is very diverse but isolated by community

lines. As a member of the Indian classical music and dance community, I have noticed that I am

often keeping that part of myself hidden when I am around my theatre colleagues. This is not a

conscious effort, but an unconscious mechanism that we have reinforced by not engaging in

conversations about meaningful inclusivity. Through this concert, I hope to create a space where

young artists of color can come and express themselves while encouraging the older generation

of artists who occupy positions of power within our community to engage with us, hear our

concerns, and help us create an incubator in Arizona for new work by emerging artists of color.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration

Best Regards,

Vaibhavi Mohan
